I have 10 Gazillion Billion dollars
Author: Raine    Date: 12/12/2011 13:54:47

If I had a $1,000,000
I'd but you a house ( I would buy you a house)
If I had a $1,000,000
I'd buy you furniture for your house ( maybe a nice chesterfield or an ottoman)
If I had a $1,000,000
I'd but you a K-car ( a nice reliant automobile)
If I had a $1,000,000, I'd buy you love

You remember that song, right? It was sung by a band called Barenaked Ladies. according to the songs wiki page:
It was first conceived as a simple improvised song while Page and Robertson were counsellors at a summer music camp. On the way home from camp, Robertson played the tune for the campers, randomly listing amusing things he would buy with a million dollars.
Ah, good fun. A camp song about dreaming of better fortunes.

So that brings me to the last GOP infomercial, also known as a GOP debate. Mitt Romney took offense at his original support for the individual mandate being pointed out. When confronted by Rick Perry, Romney put out his hand, and asked for a ten thousand dollar bet.

If nothing else is clear after this stunt, it is this: Mitt Romeny clearly doesn't understand the pain that many Americans are going through. You and I might make a silly bet -- so it is true that this does happen. That said -- you and I are not running to be President of the United States. We are not running to be the Executive office and we are not running to be the leader of the free world.... $10,000 is about 3 months pay for many Americans. It's not something to flippantly bet about-- even if it appears to be in good fun. Romney is a multimillionaire that makes that amount of money over and over again -- he doesn't go to bed hungry. He doesn't live paycheck to paycheck. His family has a roof or 2 or 3 over their heads. For some people in our nation - for many actually - ten thousand dollars is like having a million dollars. For many in our country eating a box of Kraft macaroni & cheese is extravagant. A green dress would be a welcome relief. A K-car is something to live in, as opposed to a nice reliable car. Furniture? Aaron's rental re-possessed it. That house? foreclosed on.

Funny thing - Perry was actually incorrect in his accusation, according to Politifact and other fact checking sources. From the NYT:
Mr Perry had claimed, as he has before, that in early drafts of a book, Mr. Romney had proposed that the Massachusetts health-care program should be a model for a national plan. Several news organizations, including PolitiFact.com, a nonpartisan fact-checking group, have called this claim inaccurate.

“I’ve made million dollar bets with my friends, and I think the reason that Mitt made that wager is because he knew that Rick Perry wouldn’t take it,” said Eric Fehrnstrom, a senior advisor to the Romney campaign. “And he was right.”
I have to ask this even more important question, faced with a non-truth, is THIS how Romney will react as President? Making a bet? Is this how he will react when accused of being a non-christian Mormon?

Astounding.

Good thing no one accused him of being a socialist Kenyan-born Muslim. I wonder what he would wager on with regards to that.

I'll be scarce today again, friends -- I have 10 Gazillion Billion dollars to spend....

Morning

Last night, while watching the Pres on 60 Minutes and a snippet of the Buffet story too, we had to wonder if this whole thing isn't New Money vs Old Money.

New Money, IMO, has a tendancy to be greedy. Grabbing for as much as it can like a toddler and toys

Old Money, IMO, seems to understand they didn't get there on their own, can spread it around and still understand the will make more.

I think of the Kennedy's, the Buffet's, Rockefeller's, etc... but then the accpetion to the rule would be Bill Gates

So...idle thought now that the Occupy Boston camp has been swept away.

Regardless of where you stand on the Occupy movement, would you agree or disagree that under the same Constitution that gave the right to peaceable assembly and redress of grievances, should the camps have been able to arm themselves to defend against police actions just like this?

I should pose that to some of my right-wing friends. Heads may explode, but then again they may not.

That would ultimately be a suicide mission, and would be detrimental to the cause.

Yeah, you know what "loophole" the repubs want to get rid of - home mortgage interest. That's my biggest deduction every year!

Retail Notes:

It's been freakishly quiet at the store. I'm getting a little worried, actually. This is my 4th peak season there, and this has been the weakest of them all. This year we hired a mountain of seasonal folks expecting a rush (70!), but we've been overstaffed the last week or so.

Next weekend is the last full before the holiday....either we get sacked by Visigoths, or this season is going to be a disaster. I don't know where the 'experts' are getting all their holiday sales data, but it sure ain't LL Bean.

to be honest, I've done a lot of my shopping online this year - the brick and mortar places just aren't having that great a selection. THere is now variety out there. We even went to the Sugarloaf Craft show to find a unique things

More that if it is new or old, it is the values that you come with that make how you handle the money.

Good morning everyone. Just remember that all the stampedes were at the discount chains on Black Friday. I think I heard someone theorize that it sounds more like people were just getting things while they were cheap since otherwise they wouldn't have the money to spend on it. It looks like I have to do my Christmas shopping next week presuming that I get my unused sick-personal check this Thursday along with my regular check and hopefully a Christmas bonus (hopefully the spinoff won't screw with that).

I have on my upper body the following. A heavy weight t-shirt. Over that, I have a long sleeved t-shirt. As an outter layer, I have a sweater I keep in my drawer, I added it since I am freezing. I am trying to keep the hypothermia at bay.

I have on a thinsulate-insulated sweatshirt right now, and my Primaloft snowshoe boots (albeit with cotton socks.) I have dispensed with the base layer today, but I have worn some to the office in the past.

I swear, I feel warmer camping outdoors in January than sitting here at my desk some days.
