How did we miss this?

https://motherjones.com/files/images/scoutsniperflag_0.jpg

Seriously, what the hell is wrong with us?

Marines sport Nazi SS flag in Afghanistan

My great-uncle Michael Ray (my brother's namesake) fought in the US Third Army against the Nazis and the SS; this is how we remember that legacy?

I am appalled, dismayed, and yes....ashamed to be an American tonight.

Raine put up a stub before seeing this, so for now - this is our Monday morning blog. We are off to an early appt, and will be back later.

The whistleblower gave an interview regarding this incident.

It's a very good interview and provides a little insight to what is happening here.

See this stuff tells me something about the state of moral in our armed forces. Which I think would be low at this point. It also speaks of a breakdown in command discipline. This should have been squashed by the CO of the unit. Finally this also speaks to the horrible state of education in the US, seriously, how can you not realize the lightening bolts of the SS are symbolic of evil. There are things that you don't do even if you are being ironic.

I think a sad reality is that the farther away we get from World War II-- the less generations seem to understand.

18 year olds don;t have grand parents or relatives that served in World War II -- they don;t have the benefit of hearing the horrors of the war.

and they really don't like talking about the war years -- You know, with them being German immigrants and all....

My granddad didn't talk about it either, just knew he worked with or was a medic in the Pacific theatre. My uncle Clayton flew planes and aunt Marion, I'm not sure what she did but she also served, I've seen pictures of her in uniform.

THankfully we do have a family member who is interested in military history

I cannot believe that we are still discussing women in the army at this poiint.

They are using the same damn excuse as they did for not letting gays in the military.

Comment by Raine on 02/13/2012 15:59:11
and, as Seth Myers said saturday night -- this excuse for not letting women into combat is actually providing a really good reason for not letting MEN in the military..

Comment by Raine on 02/13/2012 16:01:46
So men can't control themselves in the army.

and NO JIM -- it's not really a 2 way street. Women are more likely to get RAPED in the military than killed. I would say that is a MALE problem -- Maybe men need to deal with THIER issues.

I'm sick of this 'Boys will be boys' excuse by people like Santorum.

That's not enough reason to disallow women to serve in combat, IMO, He has a problem commanding.

It is a leadership issue. I also think there are too many guys who think they are alpha males who feel the need to prove themselves not follow their leaders (did that make sense)

If you ever wondered:

"We just need a president to sign this stuff. We don't need someone to think it up or design it. The leadership now for the modern conservative movement for the next 20 years will be coming out of the House and the Senate."
-- Grover Norquist, quoted by David Frum, making the case that Mitt Romney would be an acceptable Republican nominee.
