Santorum Drops Out
Author: BobR    Date: 04/11/2012 12:04:10

It finally happened - Rick Santorum has dropped out. A year ago it was inconceivable that Santorum would have lasted this long. His own home state had pushed him out of Congress, and his candidacy was seen as a joke. With so many comers in the field early on, he really didn't distinguish himself. Other candidates kept rising to the top, then getting washed out by poor showings or lack of support.

Not Rick Santorum - he kept floating just beneath the surface, not really attracting attention, but also not punching himself in the eye. He seemed unpopular, but managed to stay in as others fell out. Huntsman, Bachmann, Cain, Huntsman, Perry... All were held to the light of scrutiny, only to be rejected.

By the time it seemed like Santorum might be the Next Big Thing, there were just 4 candidates left (including Gingrich, another improbable come-from-behind candidate). The "anybody but Romney" crowd solidified on Santorum, deeming him Their Guy. Gingrich was just too unlikeable, and Ron Paul is... well - he's Ron Paul.

So Santorum saw his campaign go through a lot of ups and downs - first he was in, then: "was he out?". He seemed to stay in a lot longer than most people expected. It probably helped that he found a lot of support in the southern tier, and was bolstered by surges in the polls. There was a lot of mud-slinging going on, and Santorum definitely had dirty hands.

As is often the case in politics, though, it was illness that caused Santorum to drop out. His 3 year-old daughter is very ill, and he apparently thought a devastating and embarrassing loss in his own home state would be too much for her. So he did the "noble" thing, and suspended his campaign so he could spend more time at home with his family and fragile ego.

Is Santorum full of crap?... Or is he really doing this for his family? No one really knows what's inside the head of Santorum, but Romney is likely VERY happy that he doesn't have Santorum closing the gap behind him. Romney may have the magic underpants, but even those weren't strong enough to keep Santorum at bay.

So now the conservative Republicans who threw everything they had into Santorum have to decide: How do we stay in this race, now that Santorum has dropped out?

Depends.

It depends on why they liked Santorum in the first place. What was it about him that they couldn't find in other candidates like Newt Gingrich? Was it his passion?... his tenacity?... his ability to wallow in the muck and come out with a nugget of perceived truth? Maybe they liked "man-on-dog" over "dog-on-car-roof" (it's a fine line).

Regardless, it looks like Romney can finally relax and not worry about any more Santorum come-from-behind stories. His path to Tampa seems clear. All those that embraced Santorum will now have to decide whether they can grease the skids to a Romney nomination.

Besides Romney supporters, most Democrats are happy that they can stop worrying about Santorum smears, and focus solely on defeating Romney in November. They certainly have plenty of dirt on Romney, thanks to Santorum.

Blah people and socialist nigs who never liked Santorum to begin with may now rejoice.

From the police reports he was lured to the location to score some weed, but the real intent was to rob him.

Somehow, this image is appropriate to the tone of BobR's blog.

I think that we not only have a divided GOP, but a divided nation. Obama is NOT a socialist in any definition. I think that a member of any of the socialist parties of Europe or the Meretz party in Israel would be amused by this accusation.

There are many in the GOP who believe that anyone who disagrees with them is not legitimate nor a real American. I know liberals who have fought for this country and seem more legitimate to me than some Rush Limbaugh worshiping person who sees enemies all around him. They cannot stand that the world does not comply to their image of it or that others see the world differently.

You think the universe is trying to tell these people something?

The vessel was able to return to its scheduled route after an Irish coastguard helicopter arrived and hoisted aboard the sick passenger. The captain said the pickup had been a success.

Miles Morgan, Managing Director of Miles Morgan Travel which chartered the journey, had told reporters the ship would go back about 20 nautical miles to get within helicopter range.

"The passenger's condition is not thought to be life-threatening," he said.

Morgan was unable to say immediately whether the delay would affect the ship's ability to reach the location of the 1912 sinking on time.

Meanwhile the bad weather which hit the ship as it sailed from Southampton to Brighton was continuing on Tuesday afternoon, forcing the cancellation of a floor show due to safety concerns for the performers.

In other news, the Huffington Post reports a story that makes me think that a Florida Congressman is channeling the soul of Joe McCarthy.

Allen West: I've 'Heard' 80 House Democrats Are Communist Party Members

Jennifer Bendery

WASHINGTON -- As many as 80 House Democrats are communists, according to Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.).

West warned constituents at a Tuesday town hall event that he's "heard" that dozens of his Democratic colleagues in the House are members of the Communist Party, the Palm Beach Post reported. West wouldn't elaborate beyond that, however, and didn't offer up any names. There are currently 190 House Democrats.

A request for comment from West's spokeswoman was not immediately returned.

Got a little more info about the tragedy. My friend's son-in-law was with another friend when they met up with one of the 3 perps. Perp said he's got some good weed, who wants to get high. SiL's friend was up for that so they go to house where the other two perps were. SiL goes in first and gets grabbed, the friend bolts, looking for the cops. While the friend is looking for help, the SiL, who has a concealed carry permit due to his job, tries to drawn and defend himself. He's shot in the neck, but managed to wound one of the guys in the hand. The perps then proceed to move and throw SiL's body into the river with a cinder block tied to his feet.

The friend finds the cops, but doesn't remember where the house is. The cops are able to find it since SiL's car has a sign on the roof for the locksmith company he worked for on the roof. There's no one in the house. The search starts.

The next day, Sunday, the guy who got shot in the hand goes to the emergency room to have his hand treated. Cops are called, he's arrested, he rats out his two running buddies. They are all in jail on various charges including Murder 1, use of firearm in felony, armed robbery and weapons charges.

This is a sad story, and I hope that your friend will get some comfort from the fact that there will be a trial. Still, it may only be a small amount of consolation.

Florida special prosecutor Angela Corey plans to announce as early as Wednesday afternoon that she is charging neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman in the shooting of Trayvon Martin, according to a law enforcement official close to the investigation.

It was not immediately clear what charge Zimmerman will face.

Martin, 17 and unarmed, was shot and killed Feb. 26 by Zimmerman, who said he was acting in self-defense. Police in Sanford, Fla., where the shooting took place, did not charge Zimmerman, citing the state’s “stand your ground” law.

Corey told reporters Tuesday night that she would hold a news conference about the case within 72 hours. A news release from her office said the event will be held in Sanford or Jacksonville, Fla.
