Fact -vs- Reality
Author: BobR    Date: 05/09/2012 13:19:02

There's a saying among the left (as a counterpoint to the "liberal media" meme) that the facts have a liberal bias. What's interesting (and maddening) is how intensely the low-information voters on the right believe the liberal media nonsense, and purposely ignore those facts. These people (mostly Tea Partiers) definitely have been showing up at the polls during the primaries. The question is: how will they number during the general, and will they be able to sway the moderates and undecideds?

They showed in droves yesterday. Most notably, they replaced a respected establishment Republican in Indiana (Dick Lugar R-IN) with am extremist Tea Partier:
Conservatives had long targeted Lugar for defeat, arguing he represented a Republican establishment in Congress that has acquiesced to the Democratic party. They singled out Lugar's votes for the bailouts, in support of the president's stimulus and votes to confirm U.S. Supreme Court nominees Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor as evidence of his "RINO" (Republican in name only) status.

In West Virginia, Democrats (yes - Democrats) voted 40% for a convicted criminal currently in jail in their primary, giving the president only about 60% of the vote. WV is not an open primary state, so voters must be registered as Democrats to vote in the Dem primary. If this is how the Dems vote, it's a little scary to think about the Republicans there.

The other big news item is Amendment One in North Carolina. The measure which amends the state constitution to declare that marriage between one man and one woman to be the "only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized" passed with 58% of the vote. The state already had a law banning gay marriage, but this puts it into the state constitution. By it's wording, it also negates legal benefits and laws protecting unmarried couples. Watch for an uptick in domestic violence there as abusive men in unmarried relationships realize they can beat their girlfriends with impunity.

What's puzzling is how this Tea Party-driven anti-Obama ferver is at odds with the facts. The economy is improving enough that we actually ran at a surplus last month, and studies show that - on cumulative average - jobs actually increase more under Democratic presidents than under Republican presidents. There's also the fact that Osama bin Laden was finally neutralized under President Obama's leadership, and we have prevented terrorist attacks by using good old fashioned infiltration.

What's Romney to do? He tries to brush off the bin Laden capture as "even Jimmy Carter would have done it", even though even Rumsfeld wouldn't when he had the chance. Romney is also trying to trying to take credit for GM's success, which is such completely blatant bullshit, that I don't think even FAUX News is willing to take that and run with it (we'll see). Despite congressional Republicans attempts to make President Obama's first term a failure, he has succeeded nonetheless.

Where Romney needs to careful is within his own party. Ron Paul is using the system to his own advantage, so much so that he is ammassing delegates to the convention from states where he did poorly like Maine and Nevada. It's a brilliant (in an evil mad scientist kind of way) scheme, and sure to create fireworks at the convention.

Will any of this matter to the Republican voter? Probably not. They are in "anybody but Obama" mode, so all these little facts are ignored. Ron Paul hews close enough to their agenda anyway, so they'll look at that as "grass roots" validation of their beliefs. Grassroots... from a supposedly anti-government guy who's been collecting his paycheck from the taxpayers for decades.

My apologies if that little fact has a liberal bias. Here's hoping the reality of the independent voter is based on these facts, and not the fiction as espoused by the Tea Partiers and other Republican factions.

Raine y Mala about yesterdee's comments about epsom salt and gardening:

In gardening and other agriculture, magnesium sulfate is used to correct a magnesium and/or sulfur deficiency in soil, since magnesium is an essential element in the chlorophyll molecule, and sulfur is another important micronutrient. It is most commonly applied to potted plants, or to magnesium-hungry crops, such as potatoes, roses, tomatoes, peppers and cannabis. The advantage of magnesium sulfate over other magnesium soil amendments (such as dolomitic lime) is its high solubility, which also allows the option of foliar feeding.

West Virginia, you give me a sad. I read elsewhere that to be on the ballot all you have to do is pay a $2500 filing fee. I'd like to know if that was his money or not.

The other thing that is interesting is that no one has filed to become his delegate.
"While it is uncertain what amount of votes Mr. Judd will get tomorrow, it is not likely that he will earn any delegates to the national convention," Scarbro said Monday. "No one filed to run as a national convention delegate to support him for president and he may not be eligible to serve anyway, since he is currently an inmate in a federal prison."
I have also read that there is barelya functioning GOP in WV, so it is more than likely that while people are registered as Dems, they are barely dems. This is a whole lot of mischief making -- Hell even Joe Manchin acts like a republican.

How the hell does this knucklehead plan to get on strict ballot states like Virginia?

As far as NC, I believe that the reason why it passed was that the very rural areas showed up-- but keep in mind -- this was a VERY low turnout. The GOP hoped to get the wackjobs out, otherwise they would have waited until November -- when you can be pretty sure that the cities would have swung that vote the other way.
I do. Yesterday's turn out was tiny.

When talking about WVA, remember it is WVA - the state is beautiful but I don't count them as the smartest puppies in the litter.

That reminds me I have to get back on charting those turn out numbers.

You could probably put it on top of the soil so the water distributes it.

I'm doing this potato tower thing I saw on an urban farming site, its about 3 ft high do you think it would be able to reach the ones I planted at the bottom?

I've not heard of a potato tower. It might be a bit of an issue.

I don't know how many of you watch "Mad Men," but can the internets please stop talking about how they used 'Tomorrow Never Knows" in the closing montage. Yes it was expensive, yes it evoked the mood of the episode. You can shut up now, internets.

I've seen them they are sorta, kinda like tomato cages in concept. Since spuds are tubers I would think the tower is filled with soil and you grow em in that.

Since were are entering Summer Blockbuster season here is yet another reason I hate Michael Bay's movies:

The filmmaker most closely associated with them is Michael Bay, who, according to one movie demolition expert, has included steadily more explosions in each movie he’s made (up through Transformers: Dark of the Moon, which reportedly contained a mind-numbing 283 explosions).

Some think that the high price of gas is being driven by speculation and rising demand in India and China. No, it is because of the huge amout of gasoline used in make film friendly explosion effects. Stop making huge fireballs and we will get to Newt's $2.50 gas easy.

They didn't talk about harvesting, but I would think that you just open the tower up and take out the spuds. You could recycle the compost too.

yes, we used zip ties to close it, so all we have to do is cut those ties and let it all spill out. the compost and hay will be worked into the garden soil and we can re-use the cage next year

Actually, it says you tip it over after the foliage dies off and then pick the potatoes out of the pile.

Anyway...just passing through. Off to the pool!

Oh -- THIS might be why.
Obama will sit down for an interview with ABC News at 1:30 today, “during which he is likely to discuss his ‘evolving’ views on the issue,” the New York Times notes. “ABC secured the interview with Mr. Obama on Tuesday afternoon, according to two people involved in the planning.”
