DNC Final Night Recap
Author: BobR    Date: 09/07/2012 13:16:37

So another Democratic National Convention comes to an end. Last night was the closer, with anticipated acceptance speeches by Vice-President Joe Biden and President Barack Obama. The entire afternoon/night was filled with great speakers and music. James Taylor, Mary J. Blige, and the Foo Fighters all played.

Gabby Giffords brought the house to tears by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. She struggled with some of the words, and had to hold her right hand up to her heart with her left hand, but you could see the life, joy, and pride in her eyes just busting out.

There were appearances by the young and beautiful (and smart and committed) of Hollywood, in the form of Kerry Washington, Scarlett Johansson, and Eva Longoria.

Jennifer Granholm (former Governor of MI and CurrentTV talk show host) lit a fire under the convention with a barnburner of a speech. There were also appearances by James Clyburn (D-SC) and even former FL governor Republican Charlie Crist, who said he didn't leave the Republican party - the party left him. I think there are a LOT of old-school Republicans who are looking at the nutjobs who have taken over their party and thinking the same thing.

Joe Biden's son Beau brought the veep to tears with his nominating speech, and Jill Biden was amazing introducing her husband.

There were also a lot of great quotes from the speakers:
John Kerry:
  • "It isn't fair to say Mitt Romney doesn't have a position on Afghanistan—he has many!"
  • “Sarah Palin said she could see Russia from Alaska. Mitt Romney talks like he’s only seen Russia by watching ‘Rocky IV.’”

James Taylor: "You know, I don't get it... I'm an old white guy and I love Barack Obama"

Brian Schweitzer: "That dog don't hunt"

Eva Longoria: "The Eva Longoria who worked at Wendy's flipping burgers—she needed a tax break. But the Eva Longoria who works on movie sets does not."

Jennifer Granholm: "In Romney's world his cars get the elevator and the auto workers get the SHAFT!"

Joe Biden:
  • "The Bain way may bring your firm the highest profits, but it's not the way to lead our country from the highest office"
  • "Bravery resides in the heart of Barack Obama, and time and time again I have seen him summon it. This man has courage in his soul, compassion in his heart, and steel in his spine"
  • "It’s never been a good bet to bet against the American people. We have no intention of downsizing the American Dream"

But the night was President Obama's, and he made his case to America to have patience and let him finish the recovery he started:
"I won't pretend the path I'm offering is quick or easy. I never have. You didn't elect me to tell you what you wanted to hear. You elected me to tell you the truth. And the truth is, it will take more than a few years for us to solve challenges that have built up over a decade."

"All they have to offer is the same prescriptions they've had for the last thirty years: Have a surplus? Try a tax cut. Deficit too high? Try another. Feel a cold coming on? Take two tax cuts, roll back some regulations, and call us in the morning!"

"...you don't call Russia our number one enemy - not al Qaeda: Russia - unless you're still stuck in a Cold War mind warp. You might not be ready for diplomacy with Beijing if you can't visit the Olympics without insulting our closest ally. My opponent said it was 'tragic' to end the war in Iraq, and he won't tell us how he'll end the war in Afghanistan. I have, and I will."

"Yes, my plan will continue to reduce the carbon pollution that is heating our planet—because climate change is not a hoax. More droughts and floods and wildfires are not a joke. They're a threat to our children's future. And in this election, you can do something about it."

He also took the credit off of his shoulders for all of the victories thus far and put them onto the audience, proclaiming "You did that" to the crowd. We did it by getting the right people elected, and then pushing them (and the others) to do the right thing via phone calls, letter writing, etc. His "you did that" comment reminded me of a song I wrote 4 years ago (still unrecorded, sorry), inspired by then-candidate Obama's similar invocation: We Are The Change.

We can be the change again. Let's do it!

Morning, comrades.

I don't know if my candidate has won yet. Numbers were close last night (but we were trailing), and one precinct in Carlisle, MA was still not reported. Our campaign manager felt there would not be enough votes for us to win.

Checking the Globe this morning, it shows us trailing by 600, but no reporting in for Waltham, which I knew we won last night.

So I have no idea. Still waiting for the "official" count.

Look, I know we're the bluest of the blue states, but reading this list and seeing all the "uncontested" and "no candidate" listings makes me kinda sad.

Re-connecting the people with the government is going to be the next big challenge coming down the pike, methinks.

Clampdown

1-2-3-4!
Hey, hey!
Ooh!
the kingdom is ransacked
the jewels all taken back
and the chopper descends
they're hidden in the back
with a message on a half-baked tape
with the spool going round
saying im back here in this place
and i could cry
and there's smoke you could click on

What are we gonna do now?
Taking off his turban, they said, is this man a Jew?
Cos working for the clampdown
They put up a poster saying we earn more than you!
When we're working for the clampdown
We will teach our twisted speech
To the young believers
We will train our blue-eyed men
To be young believers

The judge said five to ten but I say double that again
I'm not working for the clampdown
No man born with a living soul
Can be working for the clampdown
Kick over the wall 'cause government's to fall
How can you refuse it?
Let fury have the hour, anger can be power
D'you know that you can use it?

The voices in your head are calling
Stop wasting your time, there's nothing coming
Only a fool would think someone could save you
The men at the factory are old and cunning
You don't owe nothing, so boy get runnin'
It's the best years of your life they want to steal

But, you grow up and you calm down and
You're working for the clampdown
You start wearing the blue and brown and
You're working for the clampdown
So you got someone to boss around
It makes you feel big now
You drift until you brutalize
You made your first kill now

In these days of evil presidentes
Working for the clampdown
But lately one or two has fully paid their due
For working for the clampdown
Ha! Gitalong! Gitalong!
Working for the clampdown
Ha! Gitalong! Gitalong!
Working for the clampdown

Yeah I'm working hard in Harrisburg
Working hard in Petersburg
Working for the clampdown
Working for the clampdown
Ha! Gitalong! Gitalong
Begging to be melted down
Gitalong, gitalong
Work
Work
And I give away no secrets ha!
Work
More work
Work
Work

who's barmy now ?

I think this pretty much sums up the Republican party.

And seeing how the President thoroughly eviscerated Mr. Romney in the second half of his speech....

The Scene: a generic arena filled with cheering crowds

Action: Mr. Obama is introduced by his wife, and he strides upon the stage, resolute, grim-faced, but with hopeful eyes.

"My Fellow Americans....the festering boil on America that is the GOP must be excised from our national consciousness. I have therefore reached into Mr. Romney's lying orifice and pulled out all his intestines. < drops entrails on stage > I am now going to whip out my monstrous dick and piss all over them right here and now.

If you agree with this course of action for our future, then I ask for your support.

I'd prefer he take his genius someplace else.

Especially after I read this from Bob Cesca:
You know who shouldn't be lecturing the Democrats about civility? The people who gave us swift-boating, the Southern Strategy, the outing of Valerie Plame, Birthers, Reverend Wright videos around the clock, "Obama pals around with domestic terrorists," the exploitation of 9/11, comparing a triple amputee Vietnam veteran to Saddam Hussein, the booing of a gay soldier, and the party that sported Purple Heart band-aids at the 2004 convention to mock another decorated Vietnam veteran, John Kerry, who was wounded in combat. And no one on the floor of the Democratic convention hurled peanuts at an African American camerawomen, shouting, "This is how we feed the animals."

Yes, the Democratic speakers unapologetically jabbed Romney for having a Swiss bank account and for being a shameless prevaricator. They criticized his policy proposals for being the usual Reaganomics claptrap we've heard during every election and, accurately enough, how the same policies caused the recession. There's a difference between taking fair shots at an opponent and the reprehensible tactics routinely exercised by the Republicans.

Good morning, bloggers!!

BobR, thanks for a great blog.

I think that we have to move forward and make sure that the GOP does not get in power again. There were sharp contrasts drawn between the two parties these past two weeks.

Ultimately, change is up to us. We need to become engaged not just with the national campaigns but with local offices. TriSec, a lot of local offices throughout the country go uncontested. There is a great quote from the Athenian leader Pericles that we should all remember, as we have seen proof of it in the rhetoric of this campaign: Just because you do not take an interest in politics doesn't mean politics won't take an interest in you.

Barrett bests Kearns Goodwin in 3rd Middlesex primary

State senate candidate Michael Barrett beat Joe Kearns Goodwin Thursday to win the Democratic nomination for the Third Middlesex District seat.

Barrett, of Lexington, beat Kearns Goodwin, of Concord, by 300 votes to win the nomination, according to Kearns Goodwin’s campaign manager Cayce McCabe.

“It is truly a victory of grassroots campaigning over celebrity and money,” Barrett said of his victory late Thursday.

Kearns Goodwin's father is Richard Goodwin, who was an adviser to Democratic presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson. Kearns Goodwin’s mother is Pulitzer Prize-winning presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin.

He raised twice as much money for his campaign than anyone else in the crowded race of five Democrats. Kearns Goodwin raised more than $235,000 for his campaign including celebrity contributions from Hollywood producer Steven Spielberg and Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig.

But Barrett, a former state senator for Cambridge, was the only candidate with experience in the state senate, and he credited hard work knocking on doors throughout the district for his win. Barrett also ran for governor in 1994 and lost.

Barrett also defeated the three other Democrats, Mara Dolan, of Concord, Joe Mullin, of Weston, and Alex Buck, of Chelmsford. The senate district represents Bedford, Carlisle, Chelmsford, Concord, Lincoln, Waltham, Weston, and parts of Lexington and Sudbury.

We lost by 372 votes.

TriSec, my sympathies. It is hard to work for a candidate and see voters reject the candidate. I have been there. (I have faced a lot of disappointments, particularly on the job front, but I learned long ago that it is best to keep moving forward.)

My advice is see whom you would like to support and give those candidates access to your considerable talents and your passion.

Well, this is all vast experience in campaigning for me.

As a two-time failed candidate for School Committee, I've tried a lot of things myself, but now seeing how a professional campaign is run, this is all good.

I am eyeing a run at City Council in 2014. I need to learn about fundraising, I think.

WTF?

MAybe they should take a clue from this school:
If they don't pass the quiz on stopping sexual assaults, they cannot register for second semester classes.

UM is trying to fight Missoula, Montana's reputation as the so-called "rape capital" of America after more than 80 cases of rape were reported in the town over the last three years, including 11 alleged sexual assaults involving UM students over the last 18 months alone.

There's also been the alleged gang-rape by members of University of Montana's lucrative Division I football team, Jezebel reported. Jordan Johnson, the UM's quarterback, was charged this summer with raping an acquaintance, although Johnson maintains his innocence.

Do they have separate-but-equal training materials for other religions too? And why the heck should the BSA have ANYTHING that's denomination-specific?

It's been my long-held belief that we wouldn't be having any trouble with our membership rules if the BSA headquarters were based in NYC or SFO. (We were headquartered in New York for a very long time.)

"National", as we call it, is based in Irving, TX. The other thing that most folks don't know is that the Mormon Church doesn't have any indigenous youth organization...they have designated the Boy Scouts as their "Official" youth organization, and for whatever reason, BSA national leadership is top-heavy with Mormons.

I do firmly believe this is the root of all the problems we are having. And it may also explain what I reported last week; National has pretty much told us that they "don't care" about Scouting in the Northeast anymore, so we can pretty much do what we want without fear of repercussion.

While not specifically about the Mormon takeover of the BSA, I did write about government-sponsored youth organizations a while back.

I do fear that the program may become the "Young Pioneers" one day.

It's also worth noting that the LDS and some Hasidic Jews in New York have a very special privilidge within the BSA. Officially, anybody that charters a Scout unit has to allow open membership to anyone that wants to join. However, these two sects can charter "closed" units. Meaning that a specific church or temple can start a Scout unit only for members of that church This has received very little attention outside hardcore liberal Scouters (and I assure you, we are few and far between.)

I can sorta understand the closed units for the Hasids in that there are so many dietary and other laws that they follow. The LDS on the other hand. WTF?
