Post-Debate Part Deux
Author: BobR    Date: 10/17/2012 12:41:57

Anyone who harbored doubts about President Obama's ability (and/or willingness) to take on Mitt Romney at the 2nd debate had those doubts washed away in the first 15 minutes. The president relentlessly pointed out the lies in Romney's statements and lack of specifics in his platforms. Romney's frustration was palpable, and desperation pushed him to be rude and overtly aggressive to the moderator and the President.

In fact, it wasn't so much about the good points that President Obama made - there were no real surprises there. The debate seemed to be more about how badly Mitt Romney did. President Obama came prepared to compare his record and plans against Romney's and Romney didn't like it. As the evening wore on, Romney became more desperate and frustrated, and it showed. He interrupted and disrespected both the moderator (Candy Crowley) and Obama. The end result was a contrast between a cool and collected president and a jackass.

Some Romney gems from last night:

Women in Binders: The question was about equal pay for women. President Obama went first, which was like a slow underhanded pitch which he smacked out of the park detailing the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. When it was Mitt's turn, he tried to explain how when he was governor that he wanted to hire some women. He said they had a hard time and someone had to bring him "binders full of women" to go through. It instantly became an internet meme. He also said "We’re going to have to have employers in the new economy, in the economy I’m going to bring to play, that are going to be so anxious to get good workers they’re going to be anxious to hire women." Yes, companies are going to be SO desperate for workers, they'll even stoop to hiring women.

At the same pay?... he never mentioned that.

Taxes: Romney still didn't have anything to back up his nebulous tax plan. He said that when it came to deciding which deductions people would get and which they would lose, he would just pick a number. This says to me they still haven't done the math and are expecting you to trust them that they'll do what's best for the middle class. He did mention that they'd keep the deductions and low rates for capital gains, because - you know: people struggling to get by generally have a lot of capital gains income... /snark

Libya: Perhaps one of the most galvanizing moments of the evening was when Romney was caught flat-footed trying to lie about President Obama's comments on Sept 12, the day after the attacks on the consulate in Libya. President Obama insisted he referred to that as a "terrorist attack" (which he did), and was going to let Romney hang himself with his own rope. Candy Crowley stepped in and confirmed that President Obama did indeed say what he claimed, effectively fact-checking Romney on the fly, and cutting his lie-based argument off at the knees (which naturally has right-wing heads exploding everywhere).

Jobs: Romney claimed that "Government doesn't create jobs", but also claimed that he'd create 12 million new ones if elected. Hmmm.... He also blamed China for all the jobs outsourcing.

Immigration: Romney claimed he only liked the e-check portion of the despised Arizona immigration law, but President Obama pointed out that the person who created that law is an advisor to the Romney campaign. This pushed Romney to wonder aloud why President Obama hasn't "filed legislation" to make changes to immigration law (twice), displaying his ignorance of how bills get filed in Congress.

Healthcare: The "ObamaCare/RomneyCare" discussion didn't really happen. What DID happen was a diversion into women's health issues. Romney made this statement:
I’d just note that I don’t believe that bureaucrats in Washington should tell someone whether they can use contraceptives or not. And I don’t believe employers should tell someone whether they could have contraceptive care of not. Every woman in America should have access to contraceptives. And -- and the -- and the president’s statement of my policy is completely and totally wrong.

Please note that he never uses the word "insurance".

We'll see over the next few days whether Romney's Godzilla-like performance will swing the polls in any meaningful way. President Obama is still ahead, though, and it seems likely this debate should stem any further losses.

Morning, comrades!

There is a credible rumour out there this morning from Venezuela that Castro is dead. According to the source, "expect an announcement within 72 hours."

That would be perfect - this funeral would instantly be a party.

His Lieutenant Governor was Kerry Healey (who I actually met once), seemed to be a rather severe, but coldly intelligent lady. I have no information at present about any appointments or staffers further downstream, though.

Good Morning!

Steve Benen and I were thinking the same thing last night:
I half-expected Obama to drop the mic when he was done.

Oh, and best moderator so far of any debate I've seen, locally or nationally.

I like the note in the Maddow blog, that even she called bullshit on Romney on one of his claims. That had to hurt.

(although he was already repeatedly holed below the waterline by that point.)

There was no way I was going to be able to stay up for the whole thing, and Lucky was rather adamantly screaming for me to get out of "his" chair (that is not like him at all), even though I've had the chair for a couple of years, as of yesterday it was "his". I suppose I'll be able to get this from YouTube when I get home tonight.

There were so many things that gave me a moment last night: This particular part about AK-47 was so awful.

CROWLEY: Governor Romney, the question is about assault weapons, AK-47s.

ROMNEY: Yeah, I’m not in favor of new pieces of legislation on -- on guns and taking guns away or making certain guns illegal. We, of course, don’t want to have automatic weapons, and that’s already illegal in this country to have automatic weapons. What I believe is we have to do, as the president mentioned towards the end of his remarks there, which is to make enormous efforts to enforce the gun laws that we have, and to change the culture of violence that we have.

And you ask how -- how are we going to do that? And there are a number of things. He mentioned good schools. I totally agree. We were able to drive our schools to be number one in the nation in my state. And I believe if we do a better job in education, we’ll -- we’ll give people the -- the hope and opportunity they deserve and perhaps less violence from that. But let me mention another thing. And that is parents. We need moms and dads, helping to raise kids. Wherever possible the -- the benefit of having two parents in the home, and that’s not always possible. A lot of great single moms, single dads. But gosh to tell our kids that before they have babies, they ought to think about getting married to someone, that’s a great idea.

Because if there’s a two parent family, the prospect of living in poverty goes down dramatically. The opportunities that the child will -- will be able to achieve increase dramatically. So we can make changes in the way our culture works to help bring people away from violence and give them opportunity, and bring them in the American system. The -- the greatest failure we’ve had with regards to -- to gun violence in some respects is what -- what is known as Fast and Furious. Which was a program under this administration, and how it worked exactly I think we don’t know precisely, where thousands of automatic, and AK-47 type weapons were -- were given to people that ultimately gave them to -- to drug lords.

They used those weapons against -- against their own citizens and killed Americans with them. And this was a -- this was a program of the government. For what purpose it was put in place, I can’t imagine. But it’s one of the great tragedies related to violence in our society which has occurred during this administration. Which I think the American people would like to understand fully, it’s been investigated to a degree, but -- but the administration has carried out executive privilege to prevent all of the information from coming out.

Oncew again, Romeny can't seem to get a name correct:
Lorraine Osorio has a question for you about a topic we have not...

OBAMA: This is for Governor Romney?

CROWLEY: It’s for Governor Romney, and we’ll be right with you, Mr. President. Thanks.

ROMNEY: Is it Loraina?

QUESTION: Lorraine.

ROMNEY: Lorraine?

QUESTION: Yes, Lorraine.

ROMNEY: Lorraine.

QUESTION: How you doing?

ROMNEY: Good, thanks.

QUESTION: Mr. Romney, what do you plan on doing with immigrants without their green cards that are currently living here as productive members of society?

ROMNEY: Thank you. Lorraine? Did I get that right? Good. Thank you for your question.

Romney's response on AK-47s...the first few sentences actually felt heartfelt and genuine to me, but then he dragged Fast and Furious into it, and that was that.

I have always been suspect of any candidate from either side that is essentially a "city boy" and the second they run for office, they become "a hunter since I was a boy".

Yeah, sure. Squirrels and Pigeons on City Hall Plaza are shaking in their boots.

NPR gives a good explanation:
But a blind trust does have one crucial advantage for a politician: It becomes an easy answer to any conflict-of-interest question. Mitt Romney used it in the Republican primary debates earlier this year.

"My investments are not made by me," he said at the time. "My investments for the last 10 years have been in a blind trust, managed by a trustee."

That blind trust thing is an enormous crock. The trustee still gets input from the investor.

Raine, thanks for a great blog.

I think that Obama had a masterful performance last night and that Romney looked like he was not ready for higher office.

Romney showed that he did not want to follow the rules, and was prepared to be rude and lie. He did not look like a man ready to face the leadership of China, Iran and Russia. He was not credible in his statements on the economy.

I guess I am still a little worn out from last night. Today, I am doing housework as I await word on how my interview went and If I am going back.

By the way, word in from Tokyo is that Godzilla does not like any comparison to Mitt Romney, as Godzilla is usually very effective. So, I think that an apt comparison is to Frankenstein's monster as Mitt just lurched all over the stage. So, please let me introduce Mittenstein:

Listening to a recording of the Qu'ran today in straight Arabic.

Of course, the only thing I understand is "Allahu Ackbar", but the musical nature of the reciter is astonishing.

Anyone remember the "Gregorian Chant" craze, what in the late 90s? Same kind of thing, to my way of thinking.
