Sore Losers
Author: BobR    Date: 11/09/2012 14:04:36

Prior to Tuesday's election the outcome was anything but certain. Poll-meister Nate Silver gave Obama's chances of winning somewhere in the 70-80% range, but there were a lot of unknowns and uncertainty. Would supporters show up? Would the voters still be registered when they got there? Would their IDs be accepted? Would the votes be counted? What if the polls were wrong?

There was enough uncertainty that the candidates and their supporters should have been prepared for it to go either way. Mitt Romney and his supporters, however, seemed to think it was a done deal except for the (vote) counting. They weren't really prepared to lose. They were genuinely shocked (not just disappointed) that he lost, and acted out in ways that are really unseemly.

Mitt Romney apparently never prepared for the possibility that he might lose. For those of us that stayed up into the wee hours of the night waiting for Romney to concede the obvious, we kept wondering what was taking him so long. He was so certain of winning that he never bothered to write a concession speech. The delay was because he had to write it on the spot. To his credit, he did pretty well, but he should have known there were two options for the outcome. Perhaps he and his inner team spent too much time listening to FOX "News". Karl Rove certainly did - hence his infamous melt down when the network conceded Ohio.

Whether it was Romney being a sore loser, or Romney "the businessman" in action after he walked off the stage, one thing is certain - he treated his campaign staff as disposal employees. Just like a company who outsources jobs to China, campaign workers found themselves cut off - literally. The credit cards they used for expenses were frozen before they left the hall. This left them all having to cover the bill for their hotels and cabs out of pocket. It was a breathtakingly classless move on his (or the campaign's) part. One would hope these poor staffers will be able to get reimbursed. It certainly shows what kind of president he would have been, and we should all be grateful it didn't happen.

There was also a fireworks show scheduled as part of the "winning" celebration. Instead of using them as a sort of "thanks for all the support and hard work" party, Romney scrapped it. From a guy who is a multi-millionaire, yet sneaks homemade popcorn into movie theatres, it shouldn't be surprising that he is so loathe to spend money on others, but it really comes off badly for someone who wanted to be president.

Besides not wanting to concede Ohio when all the numbers experts said it was over, the Romney campaign waited until late yesterday to concede Florida. It was moot, really. The president didn't need Florida to win. But there was also no real reason to hold out, other than to deny it to President Obama as long as possible (on a lower level - Allen West (R-FL) still hasn't conceded, despite all the votes being counted, and the results showing him to be the loser).

Romney's supporters, however, are even worse. Twitter was ablaze early Wed morning with angry sour grapes coming from Donald Trump, Neal Boortz, and Victoria Jackson. A business owner in Nevada laid off 22 of his 114 employees because he said he can't afford them. One has to wonder: who is going to do the work they did? Is he going to turn away business because he's understaffed?

Then there's the idiot "libertarian" that says others like him should cut off family members (including spouses) who were Obama supporters. It's sick, really.

All the wailing and gnashing of teeth inspired a FOX traffic reporter in Oklahoma to provide tips to viewers on beating the traffic to Canada. It was all in jest, of course, but was in response to the calls they were getting. It's sadly ironic, since Canada is MUCH more liberal than America is, in almost every regard.

It sucks to lose, especially after putting so much sweat, energy, soul, and faith into your cause. I know - I felt the same way in 2004 when it seemed inconceivable that the bumbling idiot could win another 4 years. He did. I got over it and moved on. Most Romney supporters out there will do the same. It's unfortunate, however, that the most visible and the most powerful of his supporters (not to mention the candidate himself) couldn't finesse this loss with a little more grace.

I saw that about the fireworks - I swear if we did that they would say we are being poor winners and rubbing their noses in it but if they do its all American and joyous and in good taste

good Morning!

I understand people being upset -- I was really upset in 2004 as well -- but here we are in 2012, and we are still, well -- here.

It's happening!

Florida’s final votes are still being counted, but some exit polls show Obama narrowly won the Sunshine State’s Cuban vote. The Pew Hispanic Center found that Obama won Cuban Americans in Florida by 48 to 47. So did Fox News’s exit-poll numbers and the Obama-associated One Florida—numbers Obama campaign manager Jim Messina quoted in a post-election interview. The Miami Herald found Romney narrowly won the Cuban-American vote, while local pollster Sergio Bendixen set the margin at 52-48.

But that’s almost beside the point. Fifty years after the Cuban missile crisis, it looks like Democrats picked the Republican Cuban lock in Florida. This is not just demographic data, it has the sweep of history behind it.

Having married in....they're all Republicans. The "old guard" that fled Castro still blames President Kennedy, and by extension ALL democrats, for the Bay of Pigs.

This is huge. (but then again, the old guard is mostly between 75-90 now and a demographic shift is in progress...Mrs. TriSec's generation, born here, doesn't have that same mindset.)

To put a finer point on it, Im not seeing any articles like this one written in 2004.
"How can 59,054,087 people be so DUMB?" Inside, the left-leaning British tabloid headlined its editorial, "WAR MORE YEARS." In a clear demonstration of the trans-Atlantic culture gap, the paper's description of the president's beliefs—clearly intended to strike Mirror readers as a radical agenda—is simply an accurate, if crude, précis of his platform: "Mr Bush opposes abortion and gay marriage, doesn't give a stuff about the environment, is against gun control and believes troops should stay in Iraq for as long as it takes."

The Mirror wasn't the only British paper with a striking cover. The Guardian's "G2" section was fronted by a page of solid black containing just two small words: "Oh, God." Meanwhile, the Independent ran the headline "Four More Years" along with iconic images from the first Bush term: kneeling prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, tortured prisoners at Abu Ghraib, soldiers fighting in Iraq, oil-drilling machinery, sign-wielding religious extremists, and a smirking Dubya. In France, Libération ran a picture of the president under the headline, "L'Empire empire"—"The empire declines."

The original holder of the debt (the bank) essentially "writes it off", and sells it to a collection agency for pennies on the dollar. So the original bank may get $100 of the original $1000 repaid, and they write off the rest as loss (bad debt). The debt collector can then try to make a profit on their $100 investment. OWS is instead taking that $100 "investment" as a loss.

maybe its just me - but not getting a whole loan back isn't logical in my head. If I owe X dollars, I expect to pay X dollars. Don't get why a company would write off a debt instead of working with someone to pay it back. I'm thinking too linear on this aren't I.

I totally get what OWS is doing and I think that's great. That's going to help a ton of people!

The company's thinking is that getting anything out of a defaulted account is a win for their bottom line. They also think that by selling off the account they stand to gain more than if they worked with the customer to pay it.

This is quite possibly the biggest Foreign Policy victory of Obama's first term...

President Barack Obama later this month will become the first US leader to visit Myanmar, marking the strongest international endorsement so far of the fragile democratic transition in the once-isolated Southeast Asian country after decades of military rule.

Obama will travel to Myanmar as part of a November 17-20 tour of Southeast Asia, which will also include stops in Thailand and Cambodia, the White House said on Thursday.

It will be his first international trip since winning re-election earlier this week.

He is going ahead with the trip despite recent sectarian violence in western Myanmar, which has drawn concern from the United States and European Union.

UN human rights investigators have criticised the government's handling of the strife between Buddhists and minority Muslims, and some Myanmar exiles see Obama's trip as premature, before political reforms have been consolidated.

The visit to Myanmar, the first by a sitting US president, will give Obama a chance to meet president Thein Sein and opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi to encourage the "ongoing democratic transition," White House spokesman Jay Carney said.
