Now begins the difficult process of clearing away what remains of my Father-in-law's life.

I have discovered that we had the same-size foot...so Mrs. TriSec is bringing me a number of still new in the box shoes. (And not cheap ones - Johnson & Murphy and Cole-Haan, mostly....)

I feel like Imelda!

Yes, this is completely allowed under our guidelines.

Rule 6, subsection B, "Blog Content"

WHEREAS, on some dates the blog content may not be tasty or nutritious, when in a bind for subject matter, it is acceptable to write a blog consisting of only the phrase "Republican leaders are poopy heads"

All blog authors are entitled to use this alternative once per calendar year. Punishment for multiple usage is codified under Rule 19 - Subsection A, "Penalties for Abusing the Power of Blog".

So, busy job hunting and cleaning today. I look forward to the New Year, as this one has been a bit disappointing on the job front.

Also, Happy Chanukah to anyone reading the blog today.

Hmm, the way the Islamic calendar is this year, there are no holidays in December.

I'm barely learning about these as I muddle along. Guess I'll have to celebrate the birth of another Prophet instead.

Or the re-dedication of the second temple, which is the inspiration for my "Miracle of the Radio", circa 2004 (World Series).

In any case...Peace be upon us all.

In the New York Times, Paul Krugman is offering some thoughts about the unequal split of where growth is going in this economy.

Robots and Robber Barons
By PAUL KRUGMAN

The American economy is still, by most measures, deeply depressed. But corporate profits are at a record high. How is that possible? It’s simple: profits have surged as a share of national income, while wages and other labor compensation are down. The pie isn’t growing the way it should — but capital is doing fine by grabbing an ever-larger slice, at labor’s expense.

Wait — are we really back to talking about capital versus labor? Isn’t that an old-fashioned, almost Marxist sort of discussion, out of date in our modern information economy? Well, that’s what many people thought; for the past generation discussions of inequality have focused overwhelmingly not on capital versus labor but on distributional issues between workers, either on the gap between more- and less-educated workers or on the soaring incomes of a handful of superstars in finance and other fields. But that may be yesterday’s story.

More specifically, while it’s true that the finance guys are still making out like bandits — in part because, as we now know, some of them actually are bandits — the wage gap between workers with a college education and those without, which grew a lot in the 1980s and early 1990s, hasn’t changed much since then. Indeed, recent college graduates had stagnant incomes even before the financial crisis struck. Increasingly, profits have been rising at the expense of workers in general, including workers with the skills that were supposed to lead to success in today’s economy.

Hmm. I have a pocketknife on my person right now. I also collect them; I have any number of fixed blades, daggers, and a machete lying around the house. My prized posession is a USMC K-Bar, but I rarely pull it out. Hell, I don't even know where it is right now, other than downstairs in a box someplace.

I have a couple of folders with thumb-studs that can be opened faster than you can blink. I also have two butterfly knives purchased before Mass outlawed them - still a great knife if you know how to handle one.

But then again - I"m a Scout. I teach knife & axe safety to 10-year-olds, for fuck's sake. We don't need a lobby, that's just going to complicate things.

I think I'm a little spoiled by where I work, regarding knives. We are actually expected to carry one, preferably one that we sell, for customer demonstrations. I need one every day I work in footwear to cut open boxes.

Hell, the Maine store even has a knife-sharpening station; it's expected that LL Bean customers would likely have at least a pocketknife on them.

Try that in a department store, though.

Sheesh.

In 1941, Japan attacked the Cavite Naval Yards in the Philippines and landed forces on Luzon island, and launched air attacks in Manila. Meanwhile in the Battle of Malaya, the British battleships Prince of Wales and Repulse were sunk by Japanese aircraft.

Many years ago, I worked in a knife shop. Chesapeake Knife &Tool (Tri you might remember them in Faninaul (sp) Hall). We were very pro-knife rights. Knives are tools. Hell until AOL went zero tolerance on "weapons" I carried a pocket knife with about a 2.5 inch blade.

Well I haven't started making them yet but I took inventory of all my supplies last night and got the mixer out of my closet. These I make every year:

Ammaretti con Pignoli (Almond cookie w/ Pine Nuts - Mom's favorite)
Giuguileni (Sesame Seed Cookies - Grandma's legacy)

The others.. are a surprise!

Comment by TriSec on 12/10/2012 17:41:19
Hah. I've got the following on tap this year:

Italian chocolate cookies. (These don't have a name.) I rarely make these, as they're full of nuts - the entire batch is promised to the office this year.

The "big three" that it just isn't Christmas without them:

Soft Dough cookies ("Anise Drops", commercially. I make mine with lemon)

Pizzeles.

And the family specialty, Ricotta Pie.

I also make two guava things for the Cuban crowd: Split Seconds (a sugar cookie with jam in the middle) and Pasteles. (Puff pastly with Guava filling.)

This is about normal, although I have made wine strips, biscotti, and other assorted things randomly.

Comment by Scoopster on 12/10/2012 17:43:44

Just plain anise flavor. But I then slice them and lay them on a cookie sheet to toast a bit more. Otherwise, just dip 'em in milk and go!

I am consistently amazed that my Grandma and Great-Grandma did this by hand. I don't know what I'd do without my stand mixer.

BC is the number one team in the country, and we're always "getting ready for the Beanpot" around here.

I must say, I've not missed the pro game at all. BC and BU played each other about two weeks back and it was scintillating - every bit as good as the NHL's product.

Yeah, seems the FM station playing in the lab has pretty much gone full Christmas.

I suppose I could put on my noise-cancelling headphones and play my own Christmas mix......

Dear America, before investing in a website, please for all that is holy, please do a little research on websites and learn some basic terms and concepts like "Home page" and "site navigation."

* WARNING *

Today is the day that TriSec is going to snap and go on a three-state killing spree over Christmas Carols.

I"ve already heard Paul McCartney 2x today, and the one about the uppity tart that won't go upstairs and fuck her boyfriend. (seriously - we needed a Christmas song about this?) I'm one Little Drummer Boy away from going postal here....

the upity tart one is what I like to call the rapey christmas song....

Wait.. I'm so confused.. are you guys referring to The Waitresses' "Christmas Wrapping" or "Baby it's Cold Outside"?
Baby it's cold outside: Date rape song.

I don't want to stay - Baby it's cold outside
I've got to get away - Baby it's cold outside
This evening has been - Been hoping that you'd drop your pants
So very nice - I'll hold your glands, they're very nice
My mother will start to worry - Beautiful, what's your hurry
My father will come pound on the door - Listen you little whore
So my vision is getting blurry - you're drinking a rape-drug slurry
Well Maybe just a half a drink more - Put some on porn - hard-core...

Hey Christmas Wrapping is an awesome song!

It's my fave.

I play it even when its not Christmas, that song is so great XD

That and I do admit to liking
"All I want for Christmas is You" - Mariah version
"I'll be home for Christmas" - always makes me cry
"Please come home for Christmas" - another song that makes me cry
Mala you have seen the newest rendition of Mariah's version of that song, right? The one with Jimmy Fallon and the Roots?

Well, Vince Guaraldi is my very favorite Xmas album.

I am also fond of both the Arthur Fiedler and Keith Lockhart "Holiday Pops".

I've got a mountain of jazz recordings of all the standard stuff. And a very rare "Blue Xmas" from a Mr. Davis - his only Christmas recording.

Nay, it's the pop stuff I find grating. My hate list is actually quite short.

Paul McCartney far and away at #1.
Little Drummer Boy I have hated since I was a wee lad.
Baby it's cold outside - I find it annoying in any manifestation.

That's probably it. There was one at the store a couple of seasons back that we called the "Dead Cat Song", but I don't know what the real title was.

I'm not overly fond of Mannheim Steamroller or the Siberians....way too bombastic for Xmas music, methinks. (A few are OK.)

Ya know, a little Tannenbaum and maybe a Sleigh Ride or two, and TriSec is happy.

Kazoos are almost as awesome as cowbells in ANY song.

We used to Oh Tannenbaum every Christmas Eve service. Our church hymnal had it in English and German.

Tannenbaum has dual meaning for me - the melody is used for the campfire ballad "Scout Vespers" (My favorite camp song)

Softly falls the light of day,
While our campfire fades away.
Silently each Scout should ask
Have I done my daily task?
Have I kept my honor bright?
Can I guiltless sleep tonight?
Have I done and have I dared
Everything to be prepared?

Oh, I've got another one.

"Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" (Bach)

Christmas song or not?

This has long been a point of contention in the TriSec household.

How about just plain orange sugar glaze?
