We are off to see this fellow:

Today I am reposting a blog I wrote 5 years ago.

Don't Dream

Let us for today, remember all the work that Martin Luther King did. It was so much more than this speech. He worked to end poverty, to improve labor conditions to end the war. When he was murdered in 1968, he was in Memphis, supporting labour. He was calling for a radical redistribution of wealth in this country. he told the striking sanitation workers '"All labor has dignity, but you're doing another thing. You are reminding not only Memphis, but the nation that it is a crime for people to live in this rich nation and receive starvation wages."

Mr. King had been talking about injustice for a long time. From his Lettter from a Birmingham Jail, April 16, 1963:
Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. Never again can we afford to live with the narrow, provincial "outside agitator" idea. Anyone who lives inside the United States can never be considered an outsider anywhere within its bounds.

HE spoke out against the war... From Riverside Church in NYC, he said
"As I have walked among the desperate, rejected and angry young men I have told them that Molotov cocktails and rifles would not solve their problems. I have tried to offer them my deepest compassion while maintaining my conviction that social change comes most meaningfully through nonviolent action.

But they asked, and rightly so, what about Vietnam? They asked if our own nation wasn't using massive doses of violence to solve its problems, to bring about the changes it wanted. Their questions hit home, and I knew that I could never again raise my voice against the violence of the oppressed in the ghettos without having first spoken clearly to the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today, my own government. For the sake of those boys, for the sake of this government, for the sake of the hundreds of thousands trembling under our violence, I cannot be silent."

His house had been firebombed, he had been wiretapped, he constantly recieved death threats to him and his family, he had been thrown in jail, threatened by our government, labeled as a dangerouss radical element to our nation's security, he still carried on his work.

And the night before he was killed, right after another bomb threat, after his flight was delayed, he gave to the world these hallowed words...
Well, I don't know what will happen now.
We've got some difficult days ahead. But it doesn't matter with me now.
Because I've been to the mountaintop. And I don't mind.
Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place.
But I'm not concerned about that now. I just want to do God's will.
And He's allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I've looked over.
And I've seen the promised land. I may not get there with you.
But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land.
And I'm happy, tonight. I'm not worried about anything.
I'm not fearing any man.
Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.

So Today, let us not just remember his dream, let us honour and carry on the work he did for all Americans. We must recognize that this man was more than just his I have a dream speech. It is time that we go beyond his dream and start doing. Don't just dream, but rather just do. We have so far to go.

Congratulations to the Failcons and the Patsies.

Go Baltimore Murderers. Beat the San Francisco Salary Cap Cheaters.

Though from what I hear from some "ticket scalping" company's ad this morning, the Patsies did win last night. Nice to see ad weenies get humiliated though. On both sides. Wonder if the radio station ad weenie went "uh.....don't you want to have a fallback ad?" Or even better, the radio station just screwing it up because the weenies that set up the ads are probably too drunk to do their job this morning.

Mornin' all!

Like four years ago, the boss is bringing us all to his place to watch the Inaugural & dine on snacks & bourbon. It shall be a good time!

Not as good as being down there tho.. ARGH!! I'm miffed that I didn't make it!

Ah, I wanted to go back again this year.

Finances are still an issue. But DC will always be there, so we'll get back down eventually.

(I'm hopeful we can get up-country for a long weekend late in the summer.)

I was hoping to see the inauguration today, but finances and unemployment are keeping me home.

On the brighter side I am headed to a play reading today, my first theatre related event in almost a year, and the first time I have done a serious reading in more than three.

See now, I have a number of names for our local guys when they are in their less successful phases....

The Failtriots.

The Smell-tics.

The Spew-ins.

And of course, the Dead Sox or the Red Flops; interchangeable.

Curiously, there is no alternate name for the Revs.

But I didn't come here to talk about sports just now.

Listening to TRMS - the abortion special report has got me hoppin' mad again.

Healthcare is my industry; I'm half-tempted to find these isolated abortion clinics and see if they need any insurance or billing help. I believe I would relocate for such a thing; to my way of thinking, it's the right thing to do.

I will at least be penning a screed that I intend to post to Newsvine - I'll link it back when it's completed.

(Theme - What business is it of yours? Why do your beliefs need to be the law of the land?)

Didn't think Failcons and Failtriots worked together. And I wasn't getting into the Chdeatriots BS.

If the Revs could be considered part of a major league maybe someone would think of a name.

I'm taking a day off today because I didn't know how long I would be at relatives last night. The early choke allowed me to leave early and get home before the angry drunks got out of Gillette.

At a rehab center now visiting one of Mrs Rabbit's classmates who suffered a stroke last week. Now watching inauguration while waiting for her rehab session to end.

Heh.. my friend just sent me back the money she took, plus a bit extra to cover bank fees & start paying back the rest (I'd let her borrow about a grand over the past 5 years & after this mess I called it in). She's also on a second interview today so fingers are crossed!

As I am watching Myrlie Evers-Williams speak the invocation, I am having this thought:

A couple of historic anniversaries (well, more than a couple) are happening this year. 150 years ago this July the Battle of Gettysburg occurred, marking the arguable watershed moment of the Civil War.

And there are an entire passel of historic events in the civil rights struggle that happened in 1963. We'll be seeing the fiftieth anniversaries of the Battle of Birmingham, the assassination of Medgar Evers, the bombing of the 14th Street Church, and the March on Washington.

It is altogether fitting that Mrs. Williams give the invocation, and I am incredibly grateful that I got to see her on that dais today.

So, it's not the chemo, it's the freakin' neuropathy that's going to make me tie myself to an anchor and jump overboard.

Mrs. TriSec suggested yesterday that I was actually doing better while I was ON the juice...I seem to have gotten worse since I stopped.

But then I did the math today...it's only 11 days since my last treatment, so I"m still technically mid-cycle. Once I go past 14 days, maybe things will start to improve.

Good morning, folks. Home late last night so I crashed out this morning but I do have to head out early since I am working an afternoon Knicks-Nets game on MSG. I was supposed to get out at 11:45 last night but my relief called in sick with the flu that everyone seems to be getting (glad I got my shot).

Good morning, bloggers!! Raine, thanks for a great blog.

A friend and I discussed Dr. King's legacy in light of our present times at Democracy Interactive Radio yesterday. We must remember that Dr. King was ready at the time of his death to lead a mass movement to end war and poverty.

Today marks three events in 2010, the U.S. Supreme Court issuing the Citizen's United ruling, John Edwards admitting that he fathered a child out of wedlock, and the end of Air America Radio.

I found the President's speech to be truly eloquent and hope that he can follow through on the issues that he addressed. Economic austerity is a failure and we do not need the Keystone XL pipeline.

Heard Romney wasn't there either. Isn't it customary for former Presidents (unless sick) and your opponent to be there?

Today's money paragraph:

It is now our generation's task to carry on what those pioneers began. For our journey is not complete until our wives, our mothers, and daughters can earn a living equal to their efforts. Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law - for if we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal as well. Our journey is not complete until no citizen is forced to wait for hours to exercise the right to vote. Our journey is not complete until we find a better way to welcome the striving, hopeful immigrants who still see America as a land of opportunity; until bright young students and engineers are enlisted in our workforce rather than expelled from our country. Our journey is not complete until all our children, from the streets of Detroit to the hills of Appalachia to the quiet lanes of Newtown, know that they are cared for, and cherished, and always safe from harm.

Thom Hartmann is emphasizing that President Obama sees America as a "we" society not a "me" society.

we weren't.

Truth be told the mall was more closed off than 4 years ago. They underestimated the amount of people for this.

We had a great time. We expected to walk our feet off, but truth be told the untickedted area was SORELY lacking. We did not get in.

We did however bring our old school transmitter radio -- so while we were walking we (and everyone around us) could listen to President Obama speak.

That was kinda awesome.

Sorry there were no blog nor Twitter updates today, but we ended up spending about 4 hrs walking non-stop (my knees will let me know about it in the morning). As a reminder - anyone of our blog family that wants to visit DC has a place to crash, if they need it.
