Inauguration Day 2013 - from the ground
Author: BobR    Date: 01/23/2013 14:04:31

Sunday January 20th at noon, per the Constitution, President Barack Obama was sworn in for his second term. On Monday (coincidentally, the MLK Jr. holiday), the public swearing in and parade was done. We attended the first swearing in 4 years ago along with nearly 2 million of our closest friends. We made a special trip to DC for that. Here it is 4 years later, and we have been residents of the area for over 3 years. Attending the festivities should have been a breeze. We know the area, we know the shortcuts, we had the experience of what to expect. This time should have been easy.

Sadly, no.

In a combination of over-thinking it and the US Park Service blowing it, we were not as successful as last time. Four years ago, we got on the Metro at the end of the line in Vienna. We got in line before sunrise, and waited well over an hour just to get down to the platform. When we got on the train, it was packed (remember - this is the end of the line where the car starts out empty). At the next stop, only a few people could get on, and that repeated itself down the line. I felt bad for those standing shoulder-to-shoulder on the platforms watching as train after train pulled in with zero room for new people to get on. The trains moved slowly, but we got down to L'Enfant station with plenty of time to rendevous with our friends.

This time, we were determined to avoid Metro. Mala had told us VRE was a breeze, and there's a station only a couple miles from us, but they weren't running on Monday since it was MLK Day. We decided to take Amtrak instead. We would take the DASH bus from our neighborhood to the King St. station, then walk the 500 feet over to the Alexandria AmTrak/VRE station and take AmTrak in. It meant we wouldn't arrive in Union Station until 11:00, but that should have given us enough time. As we waited for the train we saw several Metro trains arriving at the King St. station, nearly empty, heading into the city.

However, with all the security fencing, we had to walk around the east and south side of the Capitol building. By the time we got to Independence Ave. on the south side of the Mall, the President had begun his address. We listened on our little transistor radio as we made our way west, looking for an access into the Mall. We were unsuccessful. At all of the access points, they were only letting people out, not in.

The Park Service - in it's infinite wisdom - had decided that the turnout would be 600K people, and only made room for that many. The rest of the Mall was closed off:

We continued down Independence, eventually circling around the west side of the Washington Monument and finding ourselves in an area north of the monument and south of Constitution Ave. Here there was a Jumbotron and speakers:

http://www.fourfreedomsblog.com/uploads/inaug2013hidden.jpg

Keep in mind that the only was to actually get here was either via the route we took (if one had come in via the metro stations south of the mall), or by going around the north and west side of the White House on 19th St if arriving via the northern Metros. It was very inaccessible, whereas the mall area itself could have been and should have been easily accessed.

After the proceedings were done, we had hoped to get to the parade route on the south side, but - once again - the security was only letting people out. We had to go around the White House via the previously mentioned route north on 19th to K St., and then east. We ended up in a bar and watched the rest of the festivities while drinking and eating and meeting new friends.

All in all, I am still glad we did it. Nothing can beat that instant connection one gets when strangers gather for a common purpose. As we walked down Independence Ave. with the radio playing the President's address, we had people walk close to us so they could hear. We even had a few people take our picture.

On the other hand, the planners underestimated the turnout and overdid the security. There was no reason for that much of the Mall to be closed off. There was no reason to not allow people to traverse to the southern access of the parade route. There was no reason to route people that many blocks around the area. It surely put a damper on the moods of those who traveled here from far away, only to be met with a fence and a stern guard and nothing to shoe for it but a lot of aimless walking.

Will we go into the city for the 2016 inauguration? Maybe... it depends on who wins. I suspect whoever it is, it will be less crowded. Still - I will take the lessons learned of these two attempts into account before planning out our strategy.

Morning

Well that suck for VRE, they should have been running - the inauguration should have superseded the holiday

So was the bar only 2 more blocks away?

it was only a few blocks from Gallery place. As day turned to night, I got to see a lot of people going to the ball. Pretty dresses and nicely washed up men.

Morning, comrades.

Well, that kinda blows. A number of championship parades around here have been crowds of similar size, and with the Park Service at least tolerably handling 2m last time, you'd think they would be able to get this right.

Why have barriers at all? Isn't the mall wide open during 99% of the year? So what was the big deal?

Anyway....

(Heh, maybe the Army was looking for some group of rabble-rousers that jumped the fence last time....)

So, I'm compiling a list of post-treatment issues for my doctor Friday.

I actually seem to be feeling worse since treatment finished, instead of better.

While the fatigue is finally receding, I've got a huge spike in Chemo-induced peripheral neuropathy now. This is most distressing, but also quite common as I've found in my research.

They did try to poison me for six months, after all...it's going to take quite some time to process all that and let my system recover.

Pilots have a mandatory retirement age - I"m sure some other high-risk industries must as well.

Perhaps the House and Senate should....there's a minimum age in the Constitution, why not a maximum?

I know, I know, elections are term limits. Pity it doesn't work that way.

(Just look at Mass - it took death and a presidential appointment to open up a couple of Senate seats...not that either senator was doing anything wrong or bad, but I'm just sayin'....)

Fortunately I have a fallback in the Volvo. If it's that cold that the Honda won't start, Mrs. Rabbit won't be wanting to go anywhere anyway. Well, the Israeli elections have not produced clear results. It will be a coalition government. Here is a story on how it could turn out .

Who will be Israel's next prime minister?
Theoretically, the former TV journalist and Yesh Atid leader Yair Lapid could head a stable government, but all signs point to him forging a coalition government with Netanyahu at the helm.
By Jonathan Lis | Jan.23, 2013

Yair Lapid, the dark horse of Israel's 2013 election, on Tuesday night became the candidate most courted by both the right and left blocs. While Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is interested in making Lapid a major anchor in the broad government he is planning, the center bloc – and especially the Labor Party – has its eyes on Lapid as the next prime minister.

But the chances of a Prime Minister Lapid, as of now, are slim. On the eve of the election, Lapid made it clear that he does not see himself as a candidate for premier, and his electorate is largely based on rightist voters who wavered between him and Naftali Bennett. Lapid doesn't want to betray a significant chunk of those who voted for him, and entering a center-left government would dishonor those moderate declarations he made as the votes were starting to come in.

Moreover, in the center-left bloc they made it clear on Tuesday that it is by no means certain Lapid will have a majority among the factions when they make their recommendation for prime minister to the president. The Arab factions might want to abstain, or they could nominate another candidate of their own.

A more likely possibility is that Lapid will join an “equality of the burden” government headed by Netanyahu. In a government like that, which could also include Habayit Hayehudi, Tzipi Livni's Hatnuah and Kadima, there would be a stable majority of 69 Knesset members at the expense of the ultra-Orthodox factions.

Meanwhile, Haaretz has an editorial saying the following:

Netanyahu is a man of the past
The Knesset election did not end with a clear decision. Instead, a direction for the future, ahead of the next election, is emerging.
Haaretz Editorial | Jan.23, 2013 |

Israelis awaken this morning to a day of uncertainty. The voting is over, but the election is not. The soldiers’ votes, disqualified votes, the electoral threshold − all of these will still move the numbers this way or that. But to learn some lessons, no waiting is necessary.

Israel on Tuesday expressed no confidence in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. After four years at the country’s helm, together with his natural partner, MK Avigdor Lieberman, Netanyahu lost about a quarter of his strength despite − or perhaps because of − the merger with Lieberman. Netanyahu, Israelis said on Tuesday, has failed. He has failed in the political sphere, the foreign policy sphere and the socioeconomic sphere.

His failure is a failure of leadership, which will continue to cast a pall over us if he survives in power. Netanyahu plunged from Likud and Yisrael Beiteinu’s 42 MKs to about 30 because the Israeli public felt that his government had not understood the deeper significance of the protests of the summer of 2011.

The results show that the public balked at the right-wing radicalization of Likud, from the disavowal of the Bar-Ilan speech and the harmful goading of the international community in declaring the E-1 construction plan. The isolation into which Netanyahu and Lieberman led Israel worried the voters, who want good relations with the United States, under President Barack Obama, instead of more apartments in the settlements and threats of war on Iran.

Good morning, bloggers.

Raine, thanks for a great blog. I mentioned it late last night, but I saw on Facebook that John aka Bounced Granola passed on Sunday. May his memory be for a blessing.

Great blog, and I think that the authorities should have prepared for a larger crowd.

I look forward later to hearing more of Secretary of State Clinton's testimony in Congress.

*ahem* - you might want to check the author again...

BobR, that is what I get for too much multitasking. Sorry to inform the blog about Bounced Granola. I will mention his name before the Mourner's Kaddish this Friday. I will let people on his Facebook page know.

As far as LL bean, I understand, however, no way in hell am I going to tysons corners; plus, I would rather just stay inside -- if there is snow, you all know I am prepped to go out, no snow? I stay inside.

Clint, what are you in the market for? A lot of our stuff has two-way zippers on it, which a lot of people hate.

Try here to start - Men's Outerwear

(Psst - this is my area. You are dealing with a professional.)

Yepper. Got down to 13 night before last, and it's a balmy 27 right now. Believe me though, I like winter to feel like, y'know, winter. Getting snowed in kinda sucks. I can handle it though, as long as I have a generator, a passel of candles, and a charged iPad/pile of books.

I'm looking for something that is not too expensive, that I can stay warm in while not looking like George Costanza in his GoreTex jacket. Something kinda like the Town and Field Down Jacket.

Well, there's two product paths..."Wet and Cold" and "Dry and Cold".

Down is just fine in the "Dry and Cold" situation, but it sucks in the rain.

Have you considered a 3-in-1 jacket? (You've seen the bright blue one on the Weather Channel.)

That said, I have a Warm-Up Parka that I wear as my "Winter Wet", and I also have a Rugged Ridge (my winter camp and snowstorm jacket.)

I don't like down...my "Winter Dry" is a non-Bean, shearling lined, leather "A-4" flight jacket.

And if ya wanna protest with such a provocative style, expect to get arrested.

Well, I am trying to do a good deed today. My friend Laura is a dentist, and one of her hygienists found a female dog who seems to be about four months old. It looks like a husky or husky mix to me. I am asking around to a few people locally to see if anyone is interested in this girl.
