Requiem for AAR Dream
Author: BobR    Date: 04/11/2008 12:15:55

I remember it like it was almost yesterday. I was sitting at my computer at work, headphones on... I don't remember what was playing, but the anticipation was making me jumpy. For months I'd been reading about it: a new liberal radio network to counter the messages of the right-wing noise machine... and it was going to have Al Franken!... and Janeane Garofalo!

Suddenly, I heard the intro. Al Franken's voice came booming through my headphones with his usual deadpan grandiosity and then those magic words: "AirAmerica Radio is on the air".

My grin must have confused my co-workers as I listened to him skewer Bill O'Reilly and all the other liars, providing actual facts while also doing his endearingly lame comedy bits. I didn't want to go eat lunch, and eating lunch at my desk became a common thing for me.

After that came my introduction to Randi Rhodes. That was a bit of a shock for me, especially after Al. My initial reaction was, "ok - she's a bit harsh". Over time I would come to appreciate her, her passion and knowledge, although I still found her hard to listen to sometimes.

I was unable to listen at night (don't ask), so I never really got a chance to get into Majority Report, and I was only able to catch the last half hour of Morning Sedition.

But Unfiltered... That was the show for me. It was the right mix of information, humor, cerebral musings, and had a sort of "looseness" that reminded me of a college rap session (rap as in talk, not the "music"). I fell in love with it almost instantly. In fact, after listening to that for 3 hours, suddenly Al Franken seemed old and tired, as did his humor.

I joined up at AAP a week after they opened shop, and discovered the joy of live blogging. It was an amazing thing to discover that there were all of these other liberals out there in the world. I was not alone! I dove deeply into the AAP message forum (something I had not really done before), made new friends, battled with conservatives... it was like finding something that had been missing from my life that I had not even realized I was missing.

I took joy in hearing about every new station that picked up AAR. I stopped listening to music altogether. I was energized.

Then came the announcement that Mike Malloy was going to become part of the lineup. Mike Malloy used to be just a local guy in Atlanta during the late 80's, and I used to listen to him at lunch at work. I was excited that he would get a national voice, and disappointed that it was late night when I would rarely get to hear him. Fortunately, AAP was providing podcasts of all of the shows, so I began skipping Randi, and listening to Malloy from the night before.

Finally came the Best News Ever: Atlanta was getting an Air America station!... and not just one or two shows - we were getting the entire lineup, 24 hours a day. It was a weak AM signal, but I could listen while going to and from work, and I didn't have to miss any of Al if I went out to run errands at lunch.

Life with AAR was good... for a while.

Then came the signs that there were problems. Stations began dropping shows (or the entire lineup). There were reports of financial problems. Then - changes in management.

The tipping point was the removal of Lizz Winstead from Unfiltered. We should have recognized it as the canary in the coal mine, but we didn't really want to think the unthinkable. This was AAR! It was too new... it was still building and growing, right?... right?... sigh....

Unfiltered was cancelled and it was like the heart and soul went out of the network. We soldiered on with the blog, waiting to see what was put it in it's place, what the suits at AAR thought was good enough to take the place of a vibrant, intelligent, fun show. They replaced it with...

Jerry Springer.

I tried to be a good soldier. I tried to listen. I couldn't. It was awful.

Over time, it became apparent that AAR management was not interested in entertaining radio. The cancelled Morning Sedition, they got rid of Janeane, they fired Mike Malloy on the phone as he drove into work!

The shows and hosts became revolving doors, with Sam Seder and Rachel Maddow being bounced around like basketballs. It became harder and harder to defend the suits, who didn't really seem to have a clue as to what their liberal audience wanted to hear.

And now... now they've pushed Randi Rhodes - their last marquee star - out the door, and it looks like Sam Seder is following her. Rachel Maddow has been a regular on MSNBC, and may end up getting her own show. AAR is left with a handful of B-listers and Thom Hartmann who is really not an AAR employee.

NovaM radio network and the Jones radio network have provided a venue for liberal radio darlings like Stephanie Miller, Mike Malloy, and now Randi Rhodes. How fitting that NovaM is based in Phoenix, AZ, because - like the phoenix - it is rising from the ashes of what was once AAR.

R.I.P. AAR....

Well now, I'm listening to the streams from NovaM for the first time today...

I'm not sure my experience with Air America Radio is much different than Bob's, so I won't necessarily tire you with it.

Let's just say a certain song from the Karminsky Experience is enough to make me stop and remember all that could have been...

With each nail AAR drove into the coffin, they drove me further and further away, to the point that I haven't even been listening to much radio at all these past few months. I'll peer in on Momma from time to time, and I still pick up Ring of Fire, but I don't even get the podcast from the Good Doctor....and Unfiltered got me into this entire business in the first place.

But I must say, I'm feeling a little bit energized this morning, and I'm very glad to have NovaM, and even happier that all of us "founders" here knew that there was more to liberal radio and the liberal internets that that "other website"...

And we'd be nothing at all without all the rest of you loyal readers, lurkers, and bloggers!

Yes, AIR AMERICA has clutched defeat from the jaws of victory. Well done.

Comment by starling310 on 04/11/2008 13:45:42
Yup. I think that has become my only criteria. Don't "smirk" like you are about to look up someone's skirt. And, no awkward laughter.

Please note, that DOES, in fact, rule out John McSame.

Good morning everyone.

Now I'm not so pissed about WWRL cutting the AAR lineup. I should send an e-mail and ask if they are going to pick her up from Nova M. And maybe ask if we can have Steph instead of the Infomercials.

This need for our world leaders to "Play to an audience" is just another indication of the Dumbing Down of America.

"They're playing to the youth vote so they have to juggle and tell jokes!"

Mmmm, No. Maybe they should talk about things that matter to the Youth Vote, like affordable college education. If they have a "sense of humor," or are charismatic, great. But, we shouldn't force them to fake it; to deliver their platform in a suit. It's shallow and transparent to anyone paying attention.

Comment by TriSec on 04/11/2008 14:13:48
We should have known what we were in for when the biggest question leading up to the Bush presidency was "Who would you rather have a beer with?....."

I have to tell you, I have had a beer with the President's cousin, and the Bush "charm" does work best with alcohol....

But unlike his cousin, I don't think the company here is suffering through misguided leadership, nor are we planning on invading Misys or Med-ex (PMS software vendors)

Such is the nature of our society Momma. . . sex scandals are more scandulous than torture. Kind of like the most important story on Larry King last night was the death of 1 soldier by another. . . never mind the 4,000 + military deaths that have occurred overseas. No, those don't matter because they are sensational enough.

Something just occurred to me.

It's amazing how many people will call Momma and tell her not to joke around so much, or that she should be more serious about the news. Momma is a comedian by trade. Her job is to be funny, and entertain.

And, yet, "jouranlists" like Dan Abrams criticize candidates for the United States Presidency for not being funny enough.

Why is Momma held to a higher standard than the individuals we are choosing between for President.

Interesting.

I've thought for a long time that Phil Donahue would be a good match for AAR used to represent. But somehow I doubt he'd want to do a *daily* show. They'd be better off moving Sam to Randi's slot, and offering Donahue something during the weekend.

Comment by clintster on 04/11/2008 14:44:41
Excellent post, Bob. I also remember listening on my computer at work to KPOJ on 3/31/04 in anticipation of hearing Al Franken's voice. I also smiled like the cat that ate the canary as ie announced the beginning of AAR and "The O'Franken Factor". I thought that it would only be a matter of time before liberal radio would reach the airwaves in Virginia (I lived there at the time.)

A couple of years later, I came to ATL for a job interview and while I was there, I tuned into the Atlanta AAR affiliate and soaked in the love. I thought for sure that when I finally moved here that I would be able to enjoy it 24-7.

Sadly, by the time I moved here, 1690 had changed formats. It's eclectic, and I like it, but I'd rather have had Air America still broadcasting there. On the other hand, with everything that has happened on the network over the past couple of years (Lionel? Seriously, freakin' LIONEL??!?!?), maybe we're better off.

A couple of months ago, as I was traveling into the city, I saw a billboard for 920 AM, billing itself as "intelligent talk". I checked it out. Laura Ingraham. Hugh Hewitt. Michael Medved. Nope, pretty much the SOS.

It's amazing to me how Atlanta can have room for FOUR stations worth of right-wing talk, but no liberals.

Morning

Just a drive by, the internet connection is down on my office computer (the only one down in the company) so I can't come out to play today. :kickcan:

Just wanted to drive by and said hi though.

It's cool. I'm checking out my options. There's an opening for a drama teacher here, but in case it falls through, it'd be nice to find other options out there. :)

3 little ones in the back. 1 still in a car seat. And, the parents are smooooking away; windows rolled up.

That really bothers me.

Until the kids are old enough to decide if they want to smoke, parents shouldn't force them into it.

As I just posted on the SMS liveblog, I've had a scary experience at Chuck-E-Cheese. Some redneck yelling obscenities and threatening violence to someone at the other end of his cell phone, in the parking lot. The managers were too busy breaking the skeeball games to get him to stop, so he went on for about 20 minutes.

Athletes who display Tibetan flags at Olympic venues — including in their own rooms — could be expelled from this summer’s Games in Beijing under anti-propaganda rules.

He would not want the vote to be counted unless he got a chance to vote again. I see Thom talking about the airline debacle right now..

Here's the bottom line, the per hour cost to operate and MD-80:

Including Fuel:

MD-80 - $4014 = 28.67 per seat

So American has cancelled what, 3,000 flights this week? Pulling a number out of my arse, say the average flight lasts 2.5 hours. That would have saved AA $30,105,000 over the course of this week, at the cost of bad public relations, and maybe a few thousand dollars to compensate travelers if they even did that.

Looks like a win for the bottom line to me.

For me, it's not a matter of cost. I just don't think I should have to pay for anything broadcast on terrestrial radio. It's a rip off in my opinion. I pay for Sirius because it has great programming on about 200 channels. To pay $100 per year for one channel seems a bit silly. I know they have expenses and such, but that's what advertisers are for on the terrestrial end of things. If they want to charge me to listen, I don't want to listen to approximately 20 minutes of commercials per hour. OY! If you take my money, I expect something more like PBS. I don't serve cake and let you eat it too. :harumpf:

The show definatly hasn't been the same since. He's said flat out that he shouldn't have come back after that and he lost a lot of what he loved about radio.

I heard it. That's the music that usually runs during the commercial breaks when they cue the local affiliates to run their own commercials. You only hear it if you are listening to the AAR feed direct from satellite or the local outlet forgets to roll its break.
