About Last Night.
Author: Raine    Date: 04/17/2008 12:40:58

I must say I am rather disgusted. As was mentioned last night, on our live blog, they were discussing the spin instead of the issues. I feel like ABC let everyone down, Both Clinton and Obama supporters alike.

This was not a debate, it was a hit job, by a corporate controlled news outlet. We have precious little time before the Pennsylvania Primary, and instead of the moderators asking questions about issues, we got a 20 minute discussion on a flag pin. (52 minutes altogether on the alleged Obama controversies) These are non issues, and it is an insult to the American intelligence for these 2 men to be asking such questions.

Here are the issues:
The Economy...
The War...
Health Care...
Housing...
4 dollars a gallon gas...
Social Security...
Education...
Job Security...
Federal Budget...
National Security...
Putting food on the table....
The Economy....
The Economy....
The Economy....

Instead of issues, last nite, we got Agenda:
Flag Pins, Shady neighbors, the Weather underground, Reverends, Bitterness.

Well, now I'm bitter. VERY bitter. Last Night instead of attempting to give us a dignified debate, ABC chose to fan the flames of controversy. Instead of letting these two candidates DEBATE, they turned it into an episode of Jerry Springer. They did an injustice to the American people. From Tom Shayles column in the Washington Post:
To this observer, ABC's coverage seemed slanted against Obama. The director cut several times to reaction shots of such Clinton supporters as her daughter, Chelsea, who sat in the audience at the Kimmel Theater in Philly's National Constitution Center. Obama supporters did not get equal screen time, giving the impression that there weren't any in the hall. The director also clumsily chose to pan the audience at the very start of the debate, when the candidates made their opening statements, so Obama and Clinton were barely seen before the first commercial break.

At the end, Gibson pompously thanked the candidates -- or was he really patting himself on the back? -- for "what I think has been a fascinating debate." He's entitled to his opinion, but the most fascinating aspect was waiting to see how low he and Stephanopoulos would go, and then being appalled at the answer.
Charles Gibson and George Stephanopoulos are not news men, they are corporate shills working for the same company that brought *The Path to 9/11* Remember that hit job? Come to think of it... Let me add one more thing to that list of issues...
Get rid of for-profit debates.

Last night was a debacle. ABC News is dead to me.

What a waste of airtime that debate was. It probably helped McSame more than anyone.

btw - new poll shows McCain winning over Democrats.

Yes - it's time for this ugly primary to come to an end...

FIRST!!

Good morning, bloggers!!

I am an Obama supporter, but even if I was not, I would find 52 minutes on flag pins, neighbors, and clergy to be obsessive. (Perhaps Obama should mention the Family L See this story from last year from Mother Jones and Hillary's Nasty Pastorate from the Nation.

I want to hear questions about the issues that matter to me. Instead, some of the questioning last night brought to mind the words of Samuel Johnson: Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel.

The early draft of the UNN Daily Headlines is up - with a lot of stories and commentaries on last night's ..... debacle. (I suppose we should be glad that one of the questions was not, "Senator Obama, have you stopped beating your wife yet?")

Thanks for that. Here's what I sent them:

That wasn't a debate last night, it was a debacle. With one of the most important elections in our lifetime approaching, and *important* issues facing every American (such as the economy, the war in Iraq, Corporatism, etc.), close to 3/4 of the time was spent on non-issues like reverends, flag pins, Bosnia tales, and the "bitter" comments.

We deserved better. We *needed* better.

Shame.

That was exactly why when you refer to the media....as 'mainstream media' you're playing into the hands of the corporatocracy....

They aren't 'mainstream'....they are the CM, CORPORATE MEDIA. 5 companies that do nothing but wax poetic about the evil driven machinations of the uber wealthy ruling class and castigate those who would dare oppose the wealthy aristocracy and and endlessly broadcast their propaganda. They do this to further the wealth gap and create a permanent 'me society' or as Busheviks/'free marketists' refer to it an 'ownership society'....

That's very amusing coming from the man who has displayed no talent other than running his pyramid scheme corporations into bankruptcy and abrogation.

So, according to the Corporate Media's logic:

My paternal grandfather was a pedophile...I guess that makes me a pedophile.

My brother was an alcoholic...I guess that makes me an alcoholic.

F*ckers!

disclaimer: had i known about my grandfather before he died, i would have talked to him even less than i already did.

further disclaimer...i wouldn't have talked to him at all, and probably would have turned him in. . .don't want to go into the family history in full. Hopefully you get my point!

Gotta say I disagree with there.

F*ck the need for ratings. Seriously.

All debates should be on C-span and pbs from now on. No corporate sponsors, PERIOD.

That debate was two hours of my life I will never get back. I think I got more out of my interactions at this blog, AAP (not as much), the Shoot the Messenger blog and the Democracy Interactive chatroom. I went in there when some people were commenting during hour 3 of Jeff Farias show about not being able to see the debate live because the debate was not shown live in the Mountain and Pacific time zones.

:thud: From Sam Stein at huffPo:

"Screw 'em," she told her husband. "You don't owe them a thing, Bill. They're doing nothing for you; you don't have to do anything for them."

The statement -- which author Benjamin Barber witnessed and wrote about in his book, "The Truth of Power: Intellectual Affairs in the Clinton White House" -- was prompted by another speaker raising the difficulties of reaching "Reagan Democrats." It stands in stark contrast to the attitude the New York Democrat has recently taken on the campaign trail, in which she has presented herself as the one candidate who understands the working-class needs.

"I don't think [Obama] really gets it that people are looking for a president who stands up for you and not looks down on you," she said this week.

But those who were at the event say the 1995 episode fits into her larger viewpoint. As Harry Boyte, the director of the University of Minnesota's Center for Democracy and Citizenship who was at the retreat, told The Huffington Post: "[Hillary Clinton] sees herself as the champion of the oppressed, but there is always a kind of good guy versus bad guy mentality. The comment before that was that 'the Reagan Democrats are our enemies and they weren't on our side,' and she was agreeing with that comment. She said we should write them off: screw them."

I have had a problem with the Clintons even when Bill was President because of the whole centrist DLC things which meant there was no real undoing of the Reagan/Bush I policies and then we had the disaster that was Bush II which will hopefully discredit conservative policies for at least another generation.

We need another FDR.

But with the bidding, you can sometimes get more money through eBay. I really can't believe what some people will buy. And this is from a guy who has TV Guides going back to the 1950's. Even my comics only go back to the mid-1960's. Then again even the early 1960's books are too expensive for me.

If you have 1960's comics I wouldn't do them on ebay, I'd go to a reputable dealer or two to get estimates on there worth.

Granted sometimes you get more money on ebay. Ebay has fees you have to pay though so they take a cut of what you earn. You just have to watch those so they don't take advantage. I think there are other auction sites that are better about that you just have to research them.

I still have a lot of crap I've been wanting to sell on eBay but I've been too lazy about it. The extra income would help me a lot.

Might want to just have a yard sale instead, no shipping involved.

My 1960's comics I mostly bought second-hand out of dollar or discount bins so they are not in the best condition. My collection really starts in the 70's when I bought books new as a kid. Unfortunately some 80's and 90's books are not as collectible as I would like because the publishers over-printed and the speculator market caused the collecting market to crash like it did with baseball cards.

Reading the TRanscript from the debate...

CLINTON: Well, Tom, I can tell you that I may be a lot of things. But I'm not dumb. And I wrote about going to Bosnia in my book in 2004. I laid it all out there. And you're right. On a couple of occasions in the last weeks, I just said some things that weren't in keeping with what I knew to be the case and what I had written about in my book.

And, you know, I'm embarrassed by it. I have apologized for it. I've said it was a mistake. And it is, I hope, something that you can look over because, clearly, I am proud that I went to Bosnia. It was a war zone. General Wesley Clark is here in the audience with me, as one of my major supporters. He and I were talking about it before I came out.

You know, our soldiers were there to try to police and keep the peace in a very dangerous area. They were totally in battle gear. There were concerns about potential dangers. The former president of Bosnia has said he was worried about the safety of the situation.

So, I know that it is something that some people have said wait a minute. What happened here? But I have talked about this and written about it. And then, unfortunately, in a few occasions, I was not as accurate as I have been in the past.

But I know, too, that being able to rely on my experience of having gone to Bosnia, gone to more than 80 countries, having represented the United States in so many different settings, gives me a tremendous advantage going into this campaign, particularly against Senator McCain.

So, I will either try to get more sleep, Tom or, you know, have somebody that, you know, is there, as a reminder to me.
You know, you can go back for the past 15 months. We both have said things that, you know, turned out not to be accurate. You know, that happens when you're talking as much as we have talked. But, you know, I'm very sorry that I said it. And I have said that, you know, it just didn't jive with what I had written about and knew to be the truth.

She admitted that she has been lying about Bosnia.

All of the debates this year have been shallow Roman bread & circus info-tainment that don't and will not provide any intelligent discussion of the real issues. So, my question is this: why put yourself through the agony of watching these farces

No, they're probably not. But, they are paying attention to FlagPinGate, etc. And, after 1 weekend of not watching, reading I had no clue about BitterGate and would have been rendered somewhat defenseless had someone pressed me on that.

Q: Dave, as an elitist man of the people, is it wise to call a small-town crowd of gun-toting, religious zealots "bitter?"

Submitted by Chuck Ben-Hur from Altoona, PA

A: I can totally relate to the residents of small mill towns. When the mill in my town closed down, I was devastated, because up to that point I didn't even realize we had a mill. "What the hell were we milling?" I asked. But by then it was too late. So I became bitter and turned to crack guns and religion.

Q: As a normal woman of the female gender, I wear a Size 8. When shopping lately, I have found, to my dismay that the jeans have zippers that are so short as to have only 1 tooth, and the sizes go from 0 to sub-atomic. When you are president, will you please send the so-called fashion designers to a place where they will be forced to make real-sized clothes for real women with waists at the waist and not at the private area line. Will you make them design clothes in REAL sizes? I will send you a sample of one of the pair of jeans I saw on the rack. Look for a post card, the postage stamp is the jeans.

300,000 vets have mental problem, 320,000 had brain injuries

Study: 300,000 US troops from Iraq, Afghanistan have mental problems, 320,000 brain injuries

PAULINE JELINEK

AP News

Apr 17, 2008 09:47 EST

Some 300,000 U.S. troops are suffering from major depression or post traumatic stress from serving in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and 320,000 received brain injuries, a new study estimates.

Only about half have sought treatment, said the study released Thursday by the RAND Corporation.

"There is a major health crisis facing those men and women who have served our nation in Iraq and Afghanistan," said Terri Tanielian, the project's co-leader and a researcher at the nonprofit RAND.

"Unless they receive appropriate and effective care for these mental health conditions, there will be long-term consequences for them and for the nation," she said in an interview with The Associated Press.

The 500-page study is the first large-scale, private assessment of its kind — including a survey of 1,965 service members across the country, from all branches of the armed forces and including those still in the military as well veterans who have left the services.

I am struggling to pay bills, do you think I give a flying fuck whether someone wears a flag pin? Or, that they might have known a criminal when they were a kid? What a bunch of NONSENSE!!!!! Send George and Charles to the E! network, where they'll be more at home.

You know, if this election does not go to Obama, as it righteously should, there will be a whole new tribe of bitter folk, clinging to their, I don’t know, keyboards and booze, I guess.

eta: oops. the great post is at fanaticalapathy.com

It sucks that I can't listen to her now if I'm not in front of a computer. I do hope Nova M is able to get her on satellite radio since apparently WWRL is committed to Air America in that time period even under the new arrangement. At least I hope that they do give us Sam Seder in that slot and not more crappy celebrity guest hosts. I may have to add that comment to Shelagh's blog.

Speaker of "Dexter" I have noticed from prolonged, marathon level watching that as Dexter locks the front door of his apartment, it is Dexter lock that he is pulling the key out of.
