THE BOOKSHELF
Author: starling310    Date: 04/17/2008 17:32:01

So much of what I have learned in the past 4 years, has been learned through reading. With that in mind, I am taking the liberty ( hope no one minds ) to start a virtual bookshelf for DAS BLOG!

Here we can share reviews and/or reccomendations on books we've read!

And, yes Raine, I still plan on letting you borrow "Screwed." I've got a note on it to bring it with me to DC!

So, kick back, have a cup of tea, and relax with a good book.

I am currently reading The Graves are Not Yet Full by Bill Berkeley.

It's fantastic thus far. It's a really interesting look at the violence in Africa, and how it stems, not so much from unadulterated hatred, but rather from a structure of totalitarianism set up to make a few wealthy and powerful and pit the "people" against one another.

Hmm....Sounds kind of familiar!

Truthfully, I cannot believe how many things I have highlighted because they sound the Good Ole USA.

Thanks! I know I started something on the MB, but I am rarely over there anymore. So, I figured this might be easier for everybody.

I am re-reading The Looming Tower by Lawerence Wright. I read it last year, but I was busy during that period so all the Islamic names were hard to keep track of. The second time gives me more insight into the 'how' and 'why' that radical Islam is so dangerous. And, our part in that.

I need to get back to books. I spend too much of what free time I have on the internet.

oohhhh for serious books - so I guess we don't want to discuss my Janet Evanovich stuff :p

I am a total nerd, but I find A LOT of my next reads through going to University "Bookstore" sites and looking for required reading for classes that peak my interest.

Just a little tip if you are ever wondering where to start on your "What should I read next" quest.

Well in that case I recommend anything by Jasper Fforde or Christoper Moore

Crap, I think I'm gonna sound shallow! I'm reading Lush Life. It's a police procedural by Richard Price, ya know he wrote "Clockers" & "Freedomland"

When I'm not reading that I read a few pages of The Corner which should be required reading for all a ya mooks. I mean that in the nicest possible way.

It sounds better then me reading To the Nines but since I don't have book 10 yet I'll switch over to First Among Sequels next.

Oh and I've got "Angels In America' in the bullpen.

The Corner is good, eh? I remember watching the mini-series with my Dad and I loved it. I will have to check this out.

it is most excellent. Depressing as hell, but it gives you effing great insight on how the war on drugs has been lost.

I'll skip "The Corner". If I want to know about inner city gang life, I need only lean over and ask my better half, who came from that! ;)

I have a friend that is a photographer and did a book on inner city life, her neighborhood. Check out the link (slideshow), if you have the courage. Its rather sad.
