Dammit all to Hell!
Author: TriSec    Date: 04/16/2013 10:34:56

Good morning.

We interrupt our regularly-scheduled “Ask a Vet” for a rant from Your Loyal TriSec.

This is my city.

http://media-cdn.tripadvisor.com/media/photo-s/03/9b/2f/47/boston.jpg

Yesterday was our day.

I mean no insult to New York, or those that were lost, but until September 11, it was just that, September 11, an otherwise ordinary day with no significance to New York.

Patriot’s Day is Boston.

It’s more than the sporting events. We do have the Marathon, which I shouldn’t have to tell you is the oldest annual marathon in the world, having been inspired by the 1896 Olympics. Hopkinton, the “scream tunnel”, Heartbreak Hill, Rick and Dick Hoyt, Copley Square…these are all household names around the world. Our other sports claim to fame on this day is the Boston Red Sox. Before the marathon was altered, it always kicked off at noon…and the Red Sox first pitch was always at 10:30 am, the only morning start in all of baseball.

The idea was the game would be just wrapping up as the runners hit Kenmore Square.

I used to work in said Square in those days; it was absolute chaos. The company I worked for at the time gave up trying to fight it…we went out for “lunch” at about 1:30 to catch the elite runners passing through, and we’d always wait for the Hoyts to pass by before heading back in.

http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2156/2059123238_acedaeffdb_z.jpg

But there’s more to it than that….a few miles outside the city are the bedroom communities of Lexington and Concord. Every Patriot’s Day morning since the Bicentennial, hundreds of uniformed re-enactors, and thousands of spectators, trace the route of the Patriots starting with Paul Revere’s midnight ride, and ending up with the regulars getting routed at Old North Bridge.

This year, there was also a Bruins game at the Garden….the Boston Symphony was playing at Symphony hall…and despite the cold weather, the Swan Boats were in the water and the flowerbeds in the Public Garden were just starting to sprout with their spring goodness.

http://www.boston-discovery-guide.com/image-files/460-boston-public-garden-1.jpg

Patriot’s Day is Boston’s annual day in the sun. Whether or not you’re a sports fan, we are all Americans, and the historical aspects are always worth celebrating and remembering.

A heinous act has changed all that. Patriot’s Day is not a fixed holiday; it’s one of those “hack” holidays that seem to be for state employees and no one else, and as such it always takes place on the third Monday of April, which is also school vacation week in these parts.

I went to Lexington and Concord for the re-enactment myself when I was one of said schoolkids (for the big one in ’76, no less!) and the last time I was at the Marathon was a special trip in 1996 for the 100th running.

I was just contemplating early yesterday that I should take the day off next year and take Javi to do these things.

This may yet happen, but there will now forever be a black stain upon this day, when we normally celebrate history, athletic prowess, and the coming of spring.

Terrorists? Well sure, but New Englanders don’t terrorize easily. If we didn’t shrink back from what was the world’s superpower 238 years ago, what makes anyone think we’ll fold up today?

Listening to local sports talk this morning (no, not Fatty & the Forehead, but for the moment they are keeping politics out of it).

Rich Shertenlieb (the "Rich" of WBZ's Toucher & Rich) must feel like a marked man. Not only had his wife just gone through a big cancer scare (fortunately all is well now), he lives right where one of the bombs went off and doesn't know when he'll be allowed back home.

I am spending this morning satisfying a little professional curiosity and doing some RFI testing on the new Cree $10 LED bulb. Granted, my sample size is extremely small (two "homegrown" bulbs, the Cree and a random CFL I brought from home), but I was rather surprised to find that the lowly CFL bulb I had was slightly quieter in regards to electrical noise. All meet current standards by a wide margin, though.

Morning

I bet there will be twice the number of people out to either run or cheer for others next year just to give the finger to whoever did this.

Our neighborhood is still trying to account for a few runners in yesterdays marathon. I'm looking at the times of those that finished and I am really hoping they are safe.

Think there were 4 from Manassas, all have been accounted for per the Patch.

I know that today is normally Ask a vet, so I think this small part of the story deserves a mention:

Carlos Arredondo is being heralded as a true American hero as the story of how he risked his life to help the victims of the two explosions that rocked the Boston Marathon Monday afternoon spreads around the world.
(snip)

When the bombs went off, Arredondo was near the Boylston Street finish line of the marathon, which he was watching in order to support a runner who dedicated his race to Arredondo's son, a U.S. Marine who was killed in the Iraq War, according to the Portland Press-Herald of Maine.

Arredondo immediately sprinted into action after the bombs detonated, and he can be seen in videos of the aftermath rushing to one of the two bombing sites, then pulling debris and fencing away from the bloody victims, clearing the way for emergency personnel to tend to their wounds.
(snip)

Arredondo has been in the public eye before, as he has been a peace activist since 2004, when his son Lance Cpl. Alexander Arredondo died in Iraq, according to the Daily Mail, which reports that his other son, Brian, committed suicide at the age of 24 on Dec. 19, 2011, after succumbing to depression and drug addiction following the death of his brother.

Arredondo, who legally changed his name to Alexander Brian Arredondo in tribute to his sons, immigrated from Costa Rica to the United States and became an American citizen in 2006, according to a blog post by Massachusetts Institute of Technology research assistant Chris Peterson. He also volunteers for the Red Cross, according to the Daily Mail.

From Mother Jones:
One of the responders in the photograph—the man in the cowboy hat—has been identified as Carlos Arredondo, a Costa Rican immigrant whose Marine son died in action in Iraq in 2004. The day he learned of his son's death, Arrendo locked himself in a van with five gallons of gasoline and a propane torch and set the van on fire. He survived, became a peace activist, and was among the spectators who rushed toward the fumes after the explosion today. After tying a tourniquet onto the young man's legs and wheeling him past the finish line to emergency help, Arredondo, seen badly shaken and trembling in this video, gripping a small American flag drenched in blood, talks to some bystanders on the street about the explosion:

This man, his family has been thru hell and back -- and yet he ran towards the danger.

This is somewhat reminiscent of the Centennial Park bombing that occurred during the '96 Olympics in Atlanta. This was before 9/11 Changed Everything, so there wasn't an immediate attempt to blame it on brown people from foreign lands.

It turned out to be a local white extremist (Eric Rudolph).

The Olympics went on too, as did the free concerts in the park.

I have a friend in the Patriot Guard; if I can find out where and when, I will call in sick and take the back seat on his bike that day.

I was just thinking about Richard Jewel. That man went through hell --
Discovering a pipe bomb on the park grounds, Jewell alerted police and helped to evacuate the area before the bomb exploded, saving many people from injury or death. Initially hailed by the media as a hero, Jewell was later considered a suspect. Jewell's case is considered an example of the damage that can be done by reporting based on unreliable or incomplete information.

A little something Mohammed said...

63:1 When the Hypocrites come to thee, they say, "We bear witness that thou art indeed the Apostle of God." Yea, God knoweth that thou art indeed His Apostle, and God beareth witness that the Hypocrites are indeed liars.

63:2 They have made their oaths a screen (for their misdeeds): thus they obstruct (men) from the Path of God: truly evil are their deeds.

63:3 That is because they believed, then they rejected Faith: So a seal was set on their hearts: therefore they understand not.

63:4 When thou lookest at them, their exteriors please thee; and when they speak, thou listenest to their words. They are as (worthless as hollow) pieces of timber propped up, (unable to stand on their own). They think that every cry is against them. They are the enemies; so beware of them. The curse of God be on them! How are they deluded (away from the Truth)!

63:5 And when it is said to them, "Come, the Apostle of God will pray for your forgiveness", they turn aside their heads, and thou wouldst see them turning away their faces in arrogance.

63:6 It is equal to them whether thou pray for their forgiveness or not. God will not forgive them. Truly God guides not rebellious transgressors.

Good morning, bloggers!

TriSec, you, Scoopster and Trojanrabbit, along with the friend who showed me around Boston last year, have been in my thoughts and prayer as have the people who were at the marathon.

I learned of the news and focused on the news instead of job hunting. Ironically, I applied to the Concord district yesterday and found a few writing jobs to apply to in and around Boston.

Having visited your city, I see why Bostonians and New Englanders in general have a deep love of it. The place resonates with history, both the tragic and triumphant.

Yesterday was a great tragedy, but we have seen many acts of courage and compassion. In the future, I think that there will be a moment of silence during the Marathon. Boston will rebound and I am honored to know several people from the area who are approaching this crisis with courage and compassion.

I consider the Fox affiliate here to be barely good enough for the NFL, nothing else. I wouldn't expect them to be as RW toolish as Faux News though.

For me it's always been WBZ for local news, when they were NBC and now that they're CBS

I heard ball bearings last night too, depending on the size can't someone just get those from hardware or automotive type stores? Or heck even break down some toys that have them inside.

I heard that outbound jets were grounded for a bit.

Today, evidently La Guardia had a suspicious package. Evacuated most of the airport.
