Updates from the old blog:

Reports now of a "man dressed in camouflage with a rifle" about two blocks from the scene.

My first thought wasn't "Suspect", but rather "Idiot Vigilante". This won't do us any good if stupid people get even stupider and get themselves shot.

TRISEC IS OK.

But this is next town over, in Watertown. Literally across the street from athenahealth; I have many friends that will be directly affected by this today.

It's about 4 miles from here, but right up Main street and abutting the Charles River, both possible escape routes, and Main Street within sight of my front window.

No sign of any police activity at this end.

Alert from my City Councilor friend:

Robert G. Logan
Emergency Alert to All Waltham Residents:
The following is a message from City of Waltham:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From the Mayor and Chief of Police: It is requested that Waltham residents remain in their homes and Waltham businesses to remain closed until the bombing suspect at large has been captured. Follow news for information - do not call the police department. Thank you for your cooperation.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Of course, if you see anything, then you should report that to the police.

Chechnya???? Chechnya!

Wow, I absolutely don't get that. The only speculation I found comes from a poster at Kos:

Chechen sleepers protesting Putin? (2+ / 0-)
Russian nationals, actually, who lived on the border with Chechnya, it's being reported. Seemingly, they've been in the US for about a year.

Chechen nationals are not new to the terrorism game. About a decade ago, Chechens were found to be responsible for the famous Nord-Ost (Норд-Ост) Dubrovka Theater hostage crisis in Moscow (23 Oct 2002). Russian officials are said to have mishandled this crisis badly. Nord-Ost was the play production featured at the Dobrovka theater at the time.

The Russian chats are saying that a repeat of such Chechen terrorism on Russian soil is all but impossible. Chechens are visually familiar to Russians today, and they provoke immediate suspicion in heavily populated areas, where Putin's civil-rights bashing police ('militsiya' (милиция), recently changed to 'politsiya' (полиција) to sound less "military") would likely stop them on sight on some pretense.

Could these Chechen nationals, then, be carrying out a protest against Putin's dictatorial Russia on American soil? Russian chats are saying that this is the case.

Take your hands off my fkn Third Rail.

Not sure what is happening now, but Belmont PD is doing a full roll-call over the scanner to account for all their officers.

Somebody down? (But it doesn't sound urgent.)

Comment by TriSec on 04/19/2013 12:03:16
Governor is live at the scene.

MBTA shut down "until it's safe".

Stay in your homes with doors locked - only open for uniformed police officers.

All neighboring towns on lockdown.

Local, State, Federal, and National Guard at the scene.

Boston Police Commissioner on-scene, he's also stating the entire City of Boston is under the "shelter in place" order.

And on top of all that, it's a strangely beautiful spring morning. It's already pushing 70; there's brilliant sunshine, flowers and trees are finally starting to bloom, and I saw a big ol' carpenter bee browsing among the bushes when I filled up the birdfeeder earlier.

I;m so glad to see this here. Glad to see you here.

Things seem to be settling down, at the very least there has been no new news in over an hour now.

Everything is still locked down, but it's quiet locally.

Remember that picture of Jeff Bauman -- the man rescued in part by Carlos Arredondo?

He appears to have ID'd him while in the hospital.

As far as FB is concerned, no one cares about that. They're Muslims.

(I really have no idea if they are or not, not being too familiar with what goes on there)

Report of officers with guns drawn in the same Watertown neighborhood - reporters and photogs being shooed away. Seems like something is about to happen.

Live on NECN right now - more police, SWAT, and some dogs headed down that way.

Yes, the MIT police officer had been killed last night, I think he was pronounced dead on arrival. An MBTA police officer was also shot and is in critical condition.

State Police helo is orbiting the scene now - apparently the ceiling was too low overnight to put one up.

Google "100 Laurel Street, Watertown MA". This is the exact location; I have the 3-car garage that's on TV visible.

Then plug in 25 Summer Street, Waltham and do the math.

Eep!

3rd person of interest "arrested on Norfolk Street in Cambridge", according to the Globe Feed.

Also on the Globe feed, police and SWAT pulling back to about 2 blocks away...wonder if they have indications that there's additional explosives about?

410 norfolk Street is being bandied about...

Comment by TriSec on 04/19/2013 12:54:00
Well, if you look at the Google, that big, long building at grid south below the scene is athenahealth.

Fortunately, my dear friend never left her house this morning, but I know lots of people that still work there. And that's our mall and Target right there, too.

So -- 1 suspect dead, 2 people in custody -- but am I correct that one suspect is still at large?

NBS just made it clear: 2 people have been taken into custody at the home where the suspects lived -- they are not suspects. -- Suspect still at large.

Comment by trojanrabbit on 04/19/2013 12:59:25
Someone had CNN on in the break room but I put a stop to that and put on WBZ.

I still have a big problem believing anything about 2nd & 3rd suspects in custody. I'm just periodically wandering to watch the TV. It's hard to believe when one screen says "Suspect's Uncle - He was a nice, quiet boy"

and the next says

"Suspect's Uncle - He was a loser. He deserved to die."

It's like there's a random praise/insult generator running. Which suspect? Which uncle?

See what I mean? The media really needs to STFU when it comes to who, what they have. Keep it to "stay in your homes", no MBTA, no nothing.

I'm given the understanding that the 2 people were brought in for questioning as they lived in the same house -- that makes sense.

Actually this morning MSNBC -- With Mika and Giest are doing a really good job -- until stupid Joe opens his yap.

This is the problem with "TotalActionFirstTeamNewsNow!. They run with this story scrambling around trying to find content for the blow dried dweebs on the air to make them look smart. This leads to total shite getting on the air without any thought to being verified.

Yes. Not far from the Bear Mountain bridge. 9W is on the west side of the river.

Mornin' all..

Was just listening to an online stream of the Boston emergency radio freq, but it literally got cut off about five minutes ago. Last thing I heard was that they saw someone on a roof of a factory building near the Arsenal Mall, and that there were reports that the kid on the run was posting online vendettas.

News coming out about the wanted suspect.

Apparently, he's been here since Jr. High or longer....was on the Cambridge Rindge & Latin wrestling team, got named to an all-state team, and was awarded a $2500 scholarship by the City of Cambridge when he graduated in 2011.

Helluva a deep-cover mole, if all true.
