Just a Theory
Author: BobR    Date: 2013-04-22 12:00:00

Last week's series of events in Boston was the stuff of Hollywood movies. An iconic marathon on Patriot's Day... 2 bombs go off killing 3 and injuring over 100... wild speculation as to the culprits... photos released... said culprits do a Thelma and Louise, with one brother down and the other wounded and hiding... a city on lock down as hundreds of police scour neighborhoods looking for the second brother, who is finally found hiding and bleeding out in a boat in someone's backyard with a possibly self-inflicted gun shot wound.

Except, of course, that it was all real. The released photos and video were all it took for acquaintances of the two to put names to faces. Once that happened, the rest of it was only a matter of time. Left to their own devices and with few options, they tried to escape, but were unable to. With one brother dead and the other incommunicado in the hospital, the big question still remains: why?

It seems pretty clear the older brother (Tamerlan) was the "brains" behind the operation. In the video, he is walking in front with his younger brother trailing behind. During the shootout with police, he apparently had a bomb strapped to his chest. He was known to be cocky and occasionally violent, and alienated in America. There's still no clear reason why he decided to do this, and we will never be able to ask him.

The younger brother (Dzhokhar) is the bigger mystery. He had friends with whom he played soccer. Being raised here since he was 7, he was as American as anyone born here. He liked American music, skateboarded, and was - according to some reports - a bit of a stoner. He was attending college, and living in the dorm. Everyone that knew him said that it did not at all seem like the kind of thing he could possibly be involved in. They were all shocked. They said they saw him at school acting as if nothing had happened.

How could this be? Did he really have ice in his veins? Was he really able to put on such a good front leading up to and after the bombing? Even his relatives were couldn't believe the younger brother was involved.

There is one possible explanation, although it is certainly a long shot, and totally unsubstantiated. It will very likely be proven wrong. But - it IS a possible to explain it if you are willing to use a little imagination:

==== Perhaps the younger brother didn't know that they were the ones who planted the bombs. ====

Most people know I am not one to subscribe to paranoid conspiracy theories, so this kind of wild guess is a little out of the norm for me. Nonetheless, it would explain a lot:

  • It would explain why he was so calm after the bombing.

  • It would explain why he made no attempt to hide is face on that day, unlike his older brother who wore dark sunglasses and had his cap bill-forward

  • It would explain the cognitive dissonance between friends' understanding of him, and what we are being led to believe he has done.

  • It would explain why the older brother chose to go out in a blaze of glory, and he ran off and hid inside a boat, waiting to die.

  • If the gunshot wound in the throat was self-inflicted, it might explain that as well - realizing what he had done and what the prospects for his future held.

Tamerlan's boxing coach has said the Dzhokhar followed his older brother around "like a puppy". One of their uncle's has said that Tamerlan used and ruined his younger brother. It's entirely feasible that Tamerlan never told Dzhokhar that the backpacks contained bombs, and that Dzhokhar was just an unsuspecting mule.

The biggest question mark here is how would Tamerlan be able to leave the backpacks behind without arousing his brother's suspicion (both during and after the event)? It's possible that there was a third person and Tamerlan gave one of the backpacks to that third person to place. It's also possible that they set the packs down to watch some of the race, and then Tamerlan sent his younger brother off on an errand, buying himself time to leave one of the packs behind and then go drop the other one. It's definitely the wild card in this theory.

Nonetheless - as a theory, it is certainly plausible, as plausible as the idea that a skateboarding stoner going to college who played soccer with friends would suddenly go Jihad and then act like nothing happened. I can (and probably am) wrong, but I'll check back in once the facts come out.

Good morning..

While it is just a theory, this seems plausible.

I watched the interview Don Lemon did with one of the Uncles and it was very revealing.

I know that there appears to be an element of radical religiousity here, but I am starting to believe that this might be a case of the Older brother not meeting the standards expected of him -- watching his brother do well -- and then being let/made to care for him after the parents fled--

The older brother, by almost every account sounds like he has been pretty angst ridden for years -- In the interview the Uncle talks about his wanting to go to harvard. The uncle said he was tough on him and asked him how he planned to do that, his grades weren't A+, HArvard is an expensive school, etc... According to the Uncle, he sorta blew him off saying he would get a boxing scholarship.

He never got the scholarship for boxing. His brother got one for wrestling. The younger brother was an honors student.

Then his parents leave the USA and tell him to watch out for the younger brother. All this happens after both Uncles appear to have stopped communication with this part of the family.

I think this is more about a depraved man who may have some serious failures in life than religious extremism. He himself said -- in a photo essay about his dreams to be a boxer -- that he had 'no friends' in America -- this was a year an a half after the person he called his best friend was killed in nearby Waltham. He didn't have friends because by every account I've read, he wasn't friendly.

There is a part of me that thinks we might see that this case is more like what happened in DC with the sniper -- or maybe columbine --

Seems she's been having what we can only describe as dementia-type issues. Its been progressing since she was laid off about 2 years ago. We all thought it was depression but it seems like more then that. Her Lois, step-mother (my step-grandmother), is the only one who lives near her in PA so she got Aunt Bev to go the the doctors and they scheduled a CT and now Lois has power of attorney to write out her bills and stuff, and they're probably going to be taking her license away to top it all off. I'm really worried and kinda scared for her.

Teamsters from Local 25 in Boston will protect the family of bombing victim Krystle Campbell during her funeral tomorrow morning. Members of the Westboro Baptist Church are expected to protest.

Local 25 was contacted by some concerned citizens of Medford asking for help to keep members of the Westboro Baptist Church from protesting the funeral of Krystle Campbell, scheduled for tomorrow morning at 10 AM in Medford.

Local 25 President Sean O’Brien asked all off-duty Teamsters to participate:
Teamsters Local 25 will be out in full force tomorrow morning at St. Joseph’s Church in Medford to form a human shield and block the Westboro Baptist Church from protesting the funeral of Krystle Campbell. The Campbell family and friends have already endured immeasurable amounts of heartache and tragedy this week, and deserve a peaceful funeral with time to grieve privately.

Westboro Baptist Church should understand that we will go to great lengths to make sure they don't protest any funerals of the victims of the past week’s tragedies, and that those we lost receive a proper burial.

Teamsters Local 25 represents 11,000 hardworking men and women from the Boston area.

Things are getting back to normal. The kids are back to school today, and my friend is sitting at her desk at athenahealth across the street from the scene.

Interesting and speculative stuff there, Bob....but like you said, every bit of it plausible.

I'm still flummoxed by the entire concept. Chechnya? Here? I don't get it.

Fun Earth Day facts!

3) The Earth has a mass of 6,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 kilograms, or, if you prefer, 6 sextillion tons. In pounds, that’s actually…0. Nothing. Mass is a measure of how much stuff an object contains, but weight is how hard gravity pulls on that mass. The Earth is in space, orbiting the Sun, so it’s in freefall. It has mass, but no weight at all.

That's pretty

YA know, for an event on a scale of the marathon (and the Sox, Bruins, and BSO also that day) there is just no way any kind of "surveillance state" would have prevented what happened.

It is fortunate that security cameras on freakin' Lord & Taylor's were pointed that way.

You'll note that's a private company, not an FBI or DHS cam that saw them.

Sheesh.

(Hell, I don't even think Nazi Germany or Stalinist Russia could have prevented something like that. Think about the Berlin Olympics or any one of the Mayday parades. It would be all too easy.)

A question:

Can a non US-citizen buy a gun? (In Mass or in the USA in General?)

I ask because It appears that the older brother wasn't a citizen and there is some speculation that part of it is due to his assault charge that would have caused a problem.

The other question I have is how did the younger kid get a gun?
Officials said Sunday that neither of the suspects had gun permits to legally obtain the firearms employed against police. Nineteen year old Dzhokhar would not have been eligible to obtain a permit under Massachusetts law, which requires a person to be 21 or older.

Either way SHAME on every damn senator that voted against a simple background check.

I've been under the impression that online sales all go thru a FFL check by the seller.

Vermont has very lax gun laws -- 16 and over for concealed carry -- no parental permission needed.

Let me discuss buying guns online for moment. When you purchase a gun online through an auction (which is the only way you can buy a gun online as far I know) it isn't delivered directly to you. It is delivered to the holder of a federal firearms license, this would be a gun store. I do think that when the firearm is received, you still have to go through the state backround check for the state of residence. I'm not 100% sure of that. I need to check. Mail order sales of firearms have been illegal since after JFK was killed with that mail order Manlicher-Carcarno.

I'm not sure about the state checks. The rest is correct. FFL is required for online sales -- and I suspect via snail mail sales.

The problem is gun shows, straw purchases and trafficking across state lines.

This one is out of my league - I know almost nothing about gun sales and the surrounding laws in this Commonwealth.

All I know is that somewhere in my pile of random papers in the house is an FID application. I pulled that before the 2004 elections when we were teetering on the edge of a police state. Thought I might want to have a rifle around, but I never followed through.

I don't know if there's been a spike in gun sales over the past week here, but I would almost think not; we don't react that way.

The gun show loophole and people doing straw purchase are huge problem especially in places like DC and Chicago that still have high bar for gun ownership compared to other states near by. I am looking at you Virginia! As a matter of fact, the illegal gun trade makes up the plot of one of George Pelecanos' excellent crime novels.

Your landlord, the man-whore? What's up?

As you recall, last week I was sick as a dog. Tuesday night the new "boyfriend" comes over for dinner & whatever.. and all night long they're chattering away and making noise. I finally manage to get to sleep, and they wake me up three times between 11-2am. The next evening the BF comes over again, and I decide to say something to both of 'em. I didn't make a big deal about it - I was just like 'I was trying to sleep & you guys woke me up a few times. I just wanted you to know.'

Last night I'm getting everything ready for bed & the morning scramble, and he has the NERVE to say to me 'You shouldn't have said anything in front of my company.' But I hold back the anger & tell him they were both making noise, so they both deserve the criticism. Then he says 'It's none of your business what we do!'. At that point I just explode. ITS MY BUSINESS WHEN YOU FUCKING WAKE ME UP REPEATEDLY LATE AT NIGHT.

Mornin' all..

Between allergies kicking into high gear, drowsiness from the allergy meds, a small migraine and being really fucking annoyed with my soon-to-be-ex douchenozzle landlord, I am not having a very pleasant 24 hrs.

ITS MY BUSINESS WHEN YOU FUCKING WAKE ME UP REPEATEDLY LATE AT NIGHT.

how is asking them to keep it down, when they are disturbing your sleep, getting into their business? dude sounds a bit defensive for some reason.

He probably thinks I was listening to them fucking. The reality is I don't give a shit what they were doing to make the noise (and tbh I was so sick I doubt I'd even know if I wanted to). I just know that the noise woke me up over & over.

When I was living at Jolene and Cletus' place, Jolene's alarm would go off for like an hour every effing morning. I got silicone earplugs at Target. 10 pair for about 4 bucks. Cut out all that noise.
