Why yes, the NRA is JUST like the NYCLU...
Author: Raine    Date: 05/01/2013 13:59:34

...in case you were wondering.

Yesterday NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg equated the two in defending his police department use of Stop and Frisk.
I loathe that illegal guns threaten our communities every day, especially black and Latino communities, because politicians don’t have the courage to stand up for the measures that can save lives. In Washington, some elected officials don’t have the courage to stand up to the special interests on the right and pass common sense gun laws. And in New York City, some don’t have the courage to stand up to special interests on the left and support common sense policing tactics like stop and frisk. We don’t need extremists on the left or the right running our police department, whether it’s the NRA or the NYCLU.

Let's compare and contrast. Stop and Frisk stories from Think Progress. A few choice headlines:

NYPD Arrests and Detains 7-Year-Old Over $5 Dispute
Stop-and-Frisk Fails to Get Guns Off The Street Or Reduce Shootings
NYPD Spying On Muslims Bred Political And Religious Suppression, Report Finds
NYPD Officer Told Innocent 13-Year-Old To ‘Stop Crying Like A Little Girl’ During Stop And Frisk

What is Stop and Frisk? From Wikipedia:
The New York City stop-and-frisk program is a practice of the New York City Police Department by which a police officer who reasonably suspects a person has committed, is committing, or is about to commit a felony or a penal law misdemeanor, stops and questions that person, and, if the officer reasonably suspects he or she is in danger of physical injury, frisks the person stopped for weapons. The rules for stop and frisk are found in New York State Criminal Procedure Law section 140.50, and are based on the decision of the United States Supreme Court in the case of Terry v. Ohio. (snip)

Part of the stop-and-frisk program is executed under Operation Clean Halls, a program wherein private property owners grant officers prior permission to enter a property for enforcement against criminal activity.

Some NYPD officers have objected publicly to the department's use of stop-and-frisk paperwork as a performance metric, which they claim encourages officers to overuse the practice and creates public hostility. Activists have described this as a form of quota, a characterization that department representatives have denied .
From NYC dot Gov, Operation Clean Halls Request
The City offers police patrols in residential buildings to prevent drug use and sales. Landlords can request that the police conduct patrols in the hallways and stairwells of their building to remove non-residents who are loitering.

To request a police patrol, contact the Community Policing Office at your local police precinct.

A Stop and Frisk story:
NEW YORK -- Jay Victorino was standing outside his mother's apartment when he was grabbed by police, and he says if she hadn't come downstairs to identify him he would've been arrested on a trespassing charge.

That's because his mother's South Bronx building is one of thousands of private dwellings patrolled by the New York Police Department under a program known as Operation Clean Halls.

Victorino, 28, has mixed feelings about the program – on one hand, he has seen his neighborhood become safer. On the other, he doesn't think it's right to be targeted.
New York Civil Liberties Union stance on Stop and Frisk:
The NYPD’s stop-and-frisk practices raise serious concerns over racial profiling, illegal stops and privacy rights. The Department’s own reports on its stop-and-frisk activity confirm what many people in communities of color across the city have long known: The police are stopping hundreds of thousands of law abiding New Yorkers every year, and the vast majority are black and Latino.

An analysis by the NYCLU revealed that innocent New Yorkers have been subjected to police stops and street interrogations more than 4 million times since 2002, and that black and Latino communities continue to be the overwhelming target of these tactics. Nearly nine out of 10 stopped-and-frisked New Yorkers have been completely innocent, according to the NYPD’s own reports.
Another story:
Jacqueline Yates is one of a dozen New Yorkers who filed a class action lawsuit against the city.
The plaintiffs claim the tactics used in the NYPD's "Operation Clean Halls" program which grants police officers access to thousands of private apartment buildings are unconstitutional.

"The NYPD is using 'Operation Clean Halls' as an excuse to stop, question, frisk, detain and even arrest innocent people, including residents of the buildings," said Alexis Karteron, NYCLU.

Tenants told story after story of visiting friends and relatives arrested for trespassing; of sons and daughters harassed during a simple trip to the corner store; of missed days at work to fight false charges in court.

"My sister doesn't come to visit any more just because she is afraid of being harassed and being arrested just for coming to visit," said Fawn Bracy, a plaintiff.

Meanwhile, the NRA is busy protesting things like this.
It is illegal for a person under the age of 21 to buy beer. Yet, a lawsuit filed by the National Rifle Association wants them to be able to buy a deadly machine that exists for the sole purpose of forcing a high-velocity slug of metal into another human being. Yesterday, one of the most conservative federal appeals courts in the country disagreed.
I'm going to assume they'll support this idea as well. It would make sense, considering the extensive youth program they have.

Tell me again how the NYCLU is as extremist as the NRA?

Billionaire Mayor Bloomberg gives a lot of people the warm and fuzzies about gun control -- I'll even include myself among them, but as The Atlantic points out, this is a double edged sword. As a politician, he is authoritarian. He's pushed to ban trans fat, smoking and - yes, we can laugh about it - super sized drinks in the city.
That makes progressives who disdain the NRA and venerate the ACLU uncomfortable. There is, however, good reason for Bloomberg to regard them as equivalents, given his world view. The organizations, different from one another in many ways (the awfulness of Wayne LaPierre among them), are equivalent insofar as they both regard the civil liberties protected by the Constitution* as absolutes, not suggestions politicians are free to disregard if they conclude a given right is impractical. Unless the Constitution is amended, certain policies just aren't on the table. Unlike the NRA and the NYACLU, Mayor Bloomberg doesn't believe that. (Just last week, he was talking about how the Boston marathon bombing shows that we have to change the way we interpret the Constitution, extending fewer rights to Americans than they are accustomed to.) (snip)

*Or at least the ones on which they focus
The mayor might be a vocal advocate for gun control -- he's got the money for it but be aware: This is a man that also advocates racial profiling.
Of course, Bloomberg has been going both ways on religious tolerance and civil liberties for a while now – also tolerating Police Commissioner Ray Kelly’s draconian surveillance and harassment of local Muslims. So I shouldn’t have been shocked when Bloomberg lost it Tuesday over mounting criticism of Kelly’s “stop and frisk” policies, which disproportionately target young African-American men. Shamefully, he equated the NYCLU with the NRA – it’s not the first time he’s done that – and even got in a little race-baiting against the New York Times.

While the Times has editorialized against stop-and-frisk, Bloomberg claimed the paper didn’t cover the murder of Alphonza Bryant, a 17-year-old African-American, in the Bronx last week. “I loathe that a 17-year-old can be senselessly murdered in the Bronx, and the media doesn’t cover it,” Bloomberg ranted. “Do you think if a white 17-year-old prep student from Manhattan was murdered, the Times would have ignored it? I think not.”

Nice. Mayor Stop and Frisk is the real friend of African-Americans, unlike those white elitists at the New York Times.

Be wary of wolves in sheeps clothing. He's the 7th-richest person in the United States. He was Democrat before he ran for office and switched parties in 2001 to run for Mayor. In 2005, he became an independent. This is rarely mentioned these days: "He campaigned to change the city's term limits law in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis and was elected to his third term in 2009 as an independent candidate on the Republican ballot line."

Out of my district - I only heard about this in passing...about some "ballot peculiarities" yesterday. (there was one precinct that got ballots with only the Senate candidates on it, no locals. I believe it was corrected satisfactorily.)

Boston.Com is a cultural portal. It links to the Globe and is administered by them, but there's also pathways to services, arts, entertainment, and other such things.

BostonGlobe.com is specific to the Globe only; it's a pay site where you can get a virtual copy of the print edition online.

BTW, I am working on some personal Mythbusting today.

I shall be away most of the day tomorrow for my roto-rootering. I am sitting at home today working on the delightful preparatory beverages.

We're all familiar with this particular brand of snake oil, yes?

In any case, one of the testimonials promises "I lost 14 pounds!".

Since I drank the magnesium citrate last night, and will be on suprep later today, I expect a similar level of cleansing. I stepped on the scale last night before I drank my potion, and I shall track my progress.

I did lose 25 pounds as a direct result of my emergency surgery, but that's not a route I can recommend at this time.

Hmm you GI doc's office uses a different prep process. I did the clear liquid semi-fasting diet the day before, then the "cleanse" starting in the early evening. 64 oz of Gatorade is a lot to drink even over a four hour period.

It's reasons like this that makes Mr. Wise' piece so important.
“Wow, I was scheduled to speak at a church in WI, and a member said that the pastor wants to cancel my event. I said ok why? Then I was told, because I said congrats to Jason Collins on Twitter,” Butler wrote. “I said really? we have a contract, he said check the moral cause, FYI the fee was $8,500, then I was told if I removed the tweet, and apologize and ask god forgiveness, I can have the event. I said no, only god can judge.”

Leroy Butler may have lost a speaking appearance, but he no doubt gained a lot of fans.

No 55-gallon drum of said Ade here. (although I thought about buying some for medicinal purposes - this is dehydrating.) Last night was the Citrate, and I am on clear liquids all day today. (I friggin' want a COOKIE!). Suprep starts at 5pm.

I was even cleared for beer and wine today. I did think long and hard about buying some stout (For the calories. Really.) But I did not.

I do anticipate being up most of the night. And this will be interesting as we have soccer practice and a scout meeting tonight. But, ever onward.

OK, this is funny stuff.

Comedian Adam Newman wrote, "Tim Tebow's NFL career might be over, but at least he still has his virginity," and Pat Kiernan, the dry-humored morning anchor at NY1, referenced the Jets' media-hyped (and ultimately failed) 2012 trade of Tebow, asking: "What was the point of that exercise?"

Steve Layman, a sports anchor at Nashville's News Channel 5, cracked: "Is it just me or does it seem like the Jets cut Tim Tebow a long time ago?" Meanwhile, ESPN's Ed Werder, forecasted doom and gloom for the young NFL star: "Jets release Tim Tebow at worst possible time for him to find next team _ everyone has signed veteran FA QBs, drafted them or signed after."

I'm starting to believe the Jets martyred themselves for the greater good of (American) Football*.

In other news, Javi and I have visited a number of out-of-town troops over the last 2 weeks.

I think we have found a winner.

They've got two crews headed to Philmont this summer, plus a third group headed for the Northern Tier high adventure base in Minnesota.

Most of the adults, and a number of the older boys were wearing this.

And they are co-ed, too. A little known sub-group called "Venturing" has an active chapter in Belmont that meets at the same time and place.

Aaand.....the Senior Patrol Leader didn't yell at anyone or kick them. None of the scouts disrupted the meeting (and got away with it), and no games were played that involved anyone's face.

And on the Papa TriSec side....the Scoutmaster said the magic words. "We'd be glad to have you." (I went in civvies, as a parent.)

We are tied to the current unit through Summer Camp (It's paid for). But next fall we will transfer. Javi got more out of this troop in an hour than he has from our current unit in a year.

Good morning, bloggers!!

Raine, thanks for an excellent blog. I fear that Mayor Bloomberg would have no problem with the police state tactics of Generalissimo Francisco Franco in Phalangist Spain --- so long as he was not subject to them. Honestly, I wonder when Bloomberg will ask people to present their papers.

Bloomberg proves that F. Scott Fitzgerald was correct when he said that the rich are not like you and me. This man views New York City as his own private kingdom.

Congratulations, TriSec! If I end up in Massachusetts, maybe I can do the lobster for Chicago pizza trade with my brother-in-law and bring the pizzas out for a special event. (A lot of good places here will ship half cooked, frozen pizza cross country. A friend's brother got a regular supply, which made him very popular in California.)

Giradono's?

Good day, folks. Bloomberg is just another arrogant top one-percenter who just isn't as much a hardcore reactionary unlike the Koch Brothers.

So, I am enjoying my lunch of chicken boullion. I did get a good one, the Goya brand.

It's bad to see "As much as the Pacific Ocean" listed under sodium content, right?

Giordano's will ship cross country, as will Lou Malmati's, Bacino's and Edwardo's -- among others. Hmm, I wonder if Carbon -- a great Mexican restaurant -- ships cross country?

I am spending some time revising a lesson plan for a school in Framingham, MA. It is a humanities position, so I hope that my English teacher credentials and my transcripts will get me in.

Will, if you will crack open a lobster and not turn the same color as the tomalley, I shall salute you.

(Nearly killed a California-based cousin with that maneuver long ago.)

And this is why you should write a blog here and there, Liv.

The lobster would be for my brother in law. I have had lobster and thought it was okay.

I say Giordono's because we ate there on the Coldest Memorial Day Weekend In History™. We were cold, we were hungry and in the fading light we saw a sign as if shining down from Heaven above that said Pizza. We ate delish deep dish and took part of Old Style. We were made happy.
