Beating a Dead Gift Horse in the Mouth
Author: BobR    Date: 06/20/2013 13:25:20

When the IRS "scandal" broke, you could pretty much hear the Republican's licking their lips in anticipation. It was pretty gross, really, all that smacking, and there was so much spittle, we had rainy weather for weeks. The Republicans were certain this was going to bring down the Obama presidency: a government entity generally hated by everyone being used to politically target the president's "enemies".

There was just one problem - there was nothing there. The witch-hunter-in-chief convened his inquisitions hearings to "get to the bottom of it". The bottom was got (I wrote about this previously). Darrell Issa knew he had nothing, and tried to hide that from the public. One might ask: isn't that the REAL scandal here?... that the person in power claiming "corruption" found none and then refused to update the country with the truth?

That proved to be a bit too much for congressman Elijah Cummings (D-MD), who went ahead against Issa's objections, and released the FULL transcripts of the hearings. Instead of just the cherry-picked comments from the hyper-partisan Tea Party groups who felt "violated" because they wanted tax-exempt status for their political advocacy groups (which is in violation of the tax-exempt statutes) and still got it, we also heard from the self-professed conservative Republican IRS manager who oversaw the "targeting", and declared it wasn't partisan.

So the end result? Not partisan, not targeting, and certainly not a directive from the White House.

That hasn't stopped some in Congress from continuing to pursue this. House Rep Dave Camp (R-MI) has stated:
House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp (R-Mich.) pledged to hundreds of Tea Party activists that lawmakers would get to the bottom of the current IRS controversy.

Camp, whose panel is one of several examining the IRS's targeting of conservative groups, told a rally at the west front of the Capitol that lawmakers would be on the case no matter how long it took.

"It will take time, but we will get the facts, and we will follow them wherever they lead," Camp said. "We will get the truth, and we will hold those responsible accountable."

Hint to Congressman Camp: The Truth is Out There.

Ultimately, though - the gambit worked. A majority of Americans still believe the groups were targeted, and for political reasons, despite the release of the transcripts. The propaganda is overshadowing the truth, and since they aren't able to use it to boot the president, the Republicans are trying to ride this to their ultimate wet-dream: The Flat Tax (also falsely named The Fair Tax, because it is anything but).

Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) is still lying about this to forward this goal:
Hi, I’m Ted Cruz and this is the Freedom Minute.

The IRS scandal revealed the targeting of conservative groups, tea party groups, pro-life groups, and pro-Israel groups for intrusive questions and harassing.

This is the consequence of an agency that is too big and has too much power.

And now, the IRS is supposed to be put in charge of administering Obamacare.

Enough is enough.

We need to abolish the IRS, eliminate the intrusive agents, and replace the IRS and the tax code with a simple flat tax where every American can file his or her taxes on a postcard.

Every year we spend about $500 billion on tax compliance – which is dead weight loss and it doesn’t produce even a single truck or tortilla.

A flat tax would produce economic growth and create jobs.

Every one of those lines is a lie (except for "I'm Ted Cruz"). Rand Paul (R-KY) is chiming in as well. They're hoping that the anti-IRS sentiment will out-shout the truth coming from the congressional hearing transcripts. It's a long jump, though, from "uga uga - IRS BAD" to a legislative package that grossly restructures the entire IRS.

If the facts supported the allegations, I might be bothered enough to consider their anger to be valid. It's not, though, which makes them lying opportunists. No big surprise there.

I was so busy typing this morning, I didn't even see 9:00 come and go. Blog is posted, though.

Morning, comrades.

We got blogs for sale!

Troop weekend:
Saturday - June 29

Scout Camp Week:
Tuesday, July 16 ("Ask a Vet" formatting strongly recommended)
Saturday, July 20 (No restrictions)

I will not have access to any sort of electronics on any of these dates.

And in case you missed it last night:

I am feeling much better about summer camp. I get to go for free now, since "You're the only one going for the week". Which also means I'm acting Scoutmaster.

So I get to do things my way, and maybe undo some of the crapola those poor kids have put up with all season.

I suppose they're lucky I stuck to my guns and insisted that I was going. If I listened to them and backed out, they'd have no adults committed for the week now, and where would the troop be?

I thought it was just me who was getting twitchy from being pelting with tin foil. A week doesn't go by without a new or expanding "scandal".

Raine, re; your comment about my cheeky Wikipedia comment. Of course I use the footnotes, who wouldn't. I do have a caveat though, sometimes the footnotes can't be trusted because they link secondary sources. But, that is where this can get even more fun when you trip down the rabbit hole!

Oh and good morning!

I'd offer, but we are going to be in Philly for the NHC on Jun 29, and then July 20th is our yearly party blowout, and we'll be frantically making last minute preparations.

Another interesting and nice result from SCOTUS.
The Supreme Court on Thursday said the government cannot force private health organizations to denounce prostitution as a condition to get taxpayer money to fight AIDS around the world.

Chief Justice John Roberts, writing for the court, said the anti-prostitution pledge in a 2003 AIDS funding law improperly restricts the groups’ First Amendment rights. (snip)

But in the 6-2 decision, Roberts wrote that the pledge “goes beyond preventing recipients from using private funds in a way that would undermine the federal government.”

“It requires them to pledge allegiance to the government’s policy of eradicating prostitution,” he wrote. That, Roberts wrote, the government cannot do.
Scalia and Thomas dissented. Kagan didn't take part in the case as she worked on it while a member of the Obama Administration.

and then this: Supreme Court makes it harder to bring class-action lawsuits

“In Plain English,” writes Tom Goldstein of SCOTUSblog, “this means that if you have a contract with a business in which you agree to arbitrate a dispute but it says you can’t get together with other plaintiffs in a ‘class action,’ that contract will be enforced, even if it may be too expensive for you to pursue your own claim given what you might win.”

Comment by Raine on 06/20/2013 16:39:27
SCOTUS ruling makes it harder to punish repeat offenders
“In Plain English,” SCOTUSblog writer and noted SCOTUS litigator Tom Goldstein concludes, “it is now harder for the government to use the facts of a prior conviction to enhance a federal criminal sentence.” Elena Kagan wrote the decision for the court. Samuel Alito dissented. Anthony Kennedy and Clarence Thomas wrote separate concurrences.

They are idiots -- but they are idiots who fortunately stopped before they found someone to help them that WASN'T an idiot.

here is an interesting tidbit:
In December, agents were given permission to monitor Crawford and Feight's cell phones and emails.
Although Crawford had not found a radiation supply for the device, it was capable of being operated remotely.

The men were arrested on Tuesday, after having a meeting on June 12, monitored by undercover informants posing as members of the KKK interested in purchasing the device and financing the project, where they discussed testing a fully working version of the device.
I know this isn't a FISA issue but it is worth noting that a warrant was gotten to listen in on them.

Yes, a wiretap in LE slang is called a Title 3, from the section of the US Code that explains what the rules surrounding getting a wire up and running are. Thank you, David Simon if it wasn't for your amazing teevee show I wouldn't be able to discuss this intelligently.

This didn't got through FISA because it was being treated from jump street as criminal matter. Like all cases of suspected terrorism should be.
