And the Curtain Rises
Author: BobR    Date: 06/24/2013 12:49:27

This week begins like the curtain rising on the second act of a play. The stage has been set with the tension building in the first act, and the anticipation is high for what is to come. With breath held, we await the outcome of three very different stories...

For drama, we have the Supreme Court. Months ago, the arguments were made for and against the Prop 8 bill in California, and DOMA nationwide. Pundits have been trying to second-guess the mindset of the individual judges, based on the questions asked during the court proceedings. Today is expected to be the day:
As the term draws to a close at the end of this week, the nine justices still have not released decisions in two highly anticipated gay marriage cases—Perry v. Hollingsworth and Windsor v. United States—as well as two key cases involving race, Shelby County v. Holder and Fisher v. University of Texas.
[..]
In the Perry case, the court is expected decide whether California voters discriminated against gay people when they voted to ban same-sex marriage. In Windsor, the court is weighing whether the federal Defense of Marriage Act—which limits all federal marriage benefits to opposite sex couples--violates the constitutional rights of same-sex couples.

They are also deciding two voting-related cases, which are also highly anticipated.

For pathos, we have former South African president Nelson Mandela hanging onto life by his nails. At 94, the prospect of recovery seems dim. His condition is worsening. The person responsible for rebuilding S. Africa from the Constitution up, seems to be running out of time. It will be a day of mourning when he passes, but no one can say that his life was anything less than extraordinary. From repressed majority, to prisoner, to party leader, to president, to elder statesman, he is a man who will live forever in our history books.

And finally, for the theatre of the absurd, we have the ongoing Edward Snowden circus. Over the past several days, he has been formally charged, was waived extradition by Hong Kong, and fled to Moscow. From Moscow, he was scheduled to go to Venezuela or Ecuador via Cuba. However, he never boarded the flight, much to the chagrin of the reporters who booked the same flight:
The plane pictured above just left Moscow on its way to Havana, but without it's most famous passenger. Instead, the plane is filled with reporters who were hoping to catch a ride with the world's most wanted fugitive, Edward Snowden, who was checked into the flight and had purchased two tickets. However, the plane left without Snowden ever boarding, and those journalists will be sending the next few days in Cuba without a story to cover.

It's the typical Sudden Personality Syndrome of reporting arc that we see so often. We've been through the initial splash, the family story/background research, and are into the 24 hr press hounding phase. We all await the climax and the denouement so he can fade into obscurity once more, damaged goods and ruined life.

So today is the day to keep your ears and eyes on the news, as these stories take their stages and play out to a public hungry for their diversions.

I am very nervous about SCOTUS this morning... Good morning.

Now as far as Snowden -- why friggen Ecuador? From HRW:
On July 20, 2011, a judge in Guayas province sentenced each of the four to three years in prison and ordered a total of US$40 million in fines against the men and the newspaper, El Universo, based in Guayaquil. The men are Emilio Palacio, a journalist, and three members of the newspaper's board of directors, Carlos Eduardo Pérez Barriga, César Enrique Pérez Barriga, and Carlos Nicolás Pérez Barriga.

"The criminal conviction of the president's critics is a major setback for free speech in Ecuador," said José Miguel Vivanco, Americas director at Human Rights Watch. "Punishing a journalist and directors of a newspaper for ‘offending' the president is likely to have a very negative impact on the news media and public debate in Ecuador."

Boston, MA - Locals are still reeling from the sudden arrest of the TriSec on the grounds that he "hates America". While some details remain unclear, the Office of the Trisec in Waltham, MA has released the following statement:

The TriSec categorically denies that he hates America. As a boy on the North Shore, he lived just a few miles from the Marshmallow Fluff factory in Lynn, MA, and was raised on a steady diet of "fluffernutter" sandwiches, and has always preferred a scoop of marshmallow over whipped cream on an ice cream sundae.

Yesterday's refusal of a s'more is consistent with TriSec's longstanding dislike of the other kind of marshmallow and is a pattern he has maintained since he was a small boy. We can confirm that TriSec stated that he "never liked them, even when he was a kid," shortly before being led away in handcuffs by the Department of Homeland Security. We categorically deny the government's statement late yesterday that the Tri'secs denial "confirms what we knew all along, he's a dangerous, marshmallow-hating subversive".

Stay tuned for more information as the situation develops.

The New York Times reported that the Chinese government had a hand in determining Snowden would be allowed to leave Hong Kong, despite Hong Kong's assurances that it acted independently. The paper also reported, citing two "Western intelligence experts who worked for major government spy agencies," that the Chinese government had obtained some contents from Snowden's computers he traveled with.

From the report:

Two Western intelligence experts, who worked for major government spy agencies, said they believed that the Chinese government had managed to drain the contents of the four laptops that Mr. Snowden said he brought to Hong Kong, and that he said were with him during his stay at a Hong Kong hotel.

If that were the case, they said, China would no longer need or want to have Mr. Snowden remain in Hong Kong.

Lemme get this straight - Snowden went from the US (where, West Coast?) to Singapore, on to Moscow, and may or may not be headed for Havana and/or Ecuador.

To turn a phrase, "Who's paying for this, Morris?"

Looks to me like he just wanted an around-the-world trip on somebody else's dime.

Hey he makes/made good coin, since he has/had a top secret clearance he has to have excellent credit, so I'm thinking, credit cards?

One other question I have -- if the US revoked Snowden passports, then what country's passport is he flying with?

I'm listening to a podcast from the BBC called "witness". It's a daily historical snippet of about 8 minutes' duration.

Today's subject is the invention of ultrasound for medical purposes. It was originally developed for industry, and was first called an "Industrial Flaw Detector", for finding cracks in welded material.

So, I'm sorry ladies. The GOP still views you as assembly lines for the manufacture of future soldiers, or something.

At the very least, they should dust off the "Mother's Medal" from the Reich if this is the way we're headed.

(Sorry for the Godwin.)

In neuropathy news, remember I told everyone that it still feels like my socks are all bunched up under my toes when the CIPN is really acting up?

Well, I am amazed to discover an actual bunched up sock under my toes just now.

I believe this is an improvement. (And I spent much of yesterday afternoon barefoot, as I am wont to do during the summertime, with no ill effects.)

Good morning, bloggers!! I hope that everyone is doing well.

I wonder at how some stories will develop. I am concerned that Nelson Mandela's days are near their end. If so, he lead a remarkable life helping to teach a nation and a world that former enemies can come together and that truth and reconciliation are possible.

On a more personal note, I am job hunting today before babysitting for a friend this afternoon. Fortunately, the kids are pretty well behaved.

No word on any jobs yet. Although I had a weird coincidence on Friday. I applied for a job last week in Massachusetts. On Friday, I was waiting for a friend to finish doing something at Temple, so I picked up a brochure. There were quotes from people from various places. The last quote was from someone in the town I applied to earlier in the week. Weird.

Mornin' all & Happy Mondee!

Well, the good news is I don't have a blood clot, and I've also lost 10 lbs since Easter (down to ~350 again). It's a pinched nerve caused & aggravated by my weight. It'll disappear as I lose more weight (and hopefully keep it off). In the meantime I have a script for some painkillers to help cut the pain I have when laying down, sleeping & waking up.

Hrm.. after reading up on the stuff she prescribed (gabapentin) I'm not too thrilled about taking it.

I may have to resort to my old green friend instead.

Oooooooh no. I appreciate the offer, but I've personally had bad experiences with even small doses of Vicodin so I get the feeling opiates and I don't agree.

...and there's also the thing with having a girlfriend that's in opiate recovery after getting addicted to oxys. That experience was enough to scare me away from 'em unless it's absolutely necessary.

Urgh. I"m with you on that. I had some peculiar side effects while I was on the stuff. While I had no propensity to do so, I could easily see how people get addicted to that stuff. And I have a lifelong friend that's been battling that demon with mixed success for over a decade now.

Missus Mondo was given a wide range of pain killers at various points in her ordeal. She tolerated almost all of them except good old fashion morphine. That was a bit scary. Sweats, hallucinations were the two big things. She was off that right quick.

Why am I glad at times that my Dad was utterly indifferent to baseball? As a Chicago native, I guess I should be glad as our White Sox and the Chicago Cubs cause a lot of heartbreak and aggravation.
