Scorpion & Frog
Author: wickedpam    Date: 07/17/2013 13:04:22

There’s an old fable that been popping up in my mind lately, The Scorpion and the Frog. Like many, I first heard the story as part of Aesop’s Fables in Elementary School. Aesop’s story’s date back to about the 5th or 6th century BCE and are supposed to teach us morals in a mostly fanciful friendly form.

The story goes that one day a Scorpion was walking along and comes to a stream. The water was very wild and swift. Looking for a way to cross without drowning he finally comes across a Frog sitting in the rushes on the opposite side of the stream.

"Hellooo Mr. Frog!" called Scorpion from across the water, "Would you be so kind as to give me a ride on your back across the river?"

"Well now, Mr. Scorpion! How do I know that if I try to help you, you won’t try to kill me?" asked Frog hesitantly.

"Because," Scorpion replied, "If I try to kill you, then I would die too, since I cannot swim!"

Frog thought for a moment then asked. "What about when I get close to the bank? You could still try to kill me and get back to the shore!"

"This is true," agreed Scorpion, "But then I wouldn't be able to get to the other side of the river!"

"Alright then...how do I know you won’t just wait till we get to the other side and THEN kill me?" said Frog.

"Ahh...," charmed Scorpion, "Because you see, once you've taken me to the other side of this river, I will be so grateful for your help, that it would hardly be fair to reward you with death, now would it?!"

Frog thought about what Scorpion said then agreed to take him across the river. He swam over to the bank and settled himself near the mud to pick up his passenger. Scorpion crawled onto Frog's back and Frog slid into the river. Muddy water swirled around them, but Frog stayed near the surface so Scorpion would not drown. He kicked strongly through the first half of the stream, his flippers paddling wildly against the current.

Halfway across the river, Frog suddenly felt a sharp sting in his back and, out of the corner of his eye, saw Scorpion remove his stinger from Frog's back. A deadening numbness began to creep into his limbs.

"You fool!" croaked Frog, "Now we shall both die! Why on earth did you do that?"

Scorpion shrugged "I could not help myself. It is my nature."

Then they both sank into the muddy waters of the swiftly flowing river.

Just yesterday Harry Reid and Mitch McConnell supposedly came to an agreement to allow 7 nominees to move past the currently cowardly version of the filibuster for a vote (after replacing 2 nominees that is). There are still many, many, many votes that can’t even make it to the floor because of those that are hiding behind a whispered filibuster.

If this were Mala’s World a filibuster would be just like in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington every time someone wanted to do that. It’s honorable and brave to stand up and fight for something you believe in, it’s something that could be respected by either side of an issue.

In Mala’s World, everyone also gets a pony.

But anyway – word of advice to Senator Reid, watch out for Scorpions.

I cannot begin to comprehend the level of ODS that causes a person to compare the President to George Zimmerman.

REally interesting comment from someone I follow on twitter:
like i said, you can repeal SYG but you can't repeal the "Scary black man defense" and the latter is the real issue

i'm just sick of hearing people act like all we gotta do is repeal SYG and miraculously young black lives will be saved. they're still black
That's the crux of all of this, isn't it?

So fucking depressing.

Raine, Alex Pareene at Salon has Richard Cohen's number

A “uniform we all recognize.” “We all.” “We.” Richard Cohen speaks for us all. Or “us” “all.” That one incredibly dumb assertion, stated with perfect idiotic certainty in the first-person plural, is exactly the sort of thing that makes Richard Cohen America’s worst columnist on America’s worst opinion page.

It is a pretty epic takedown.

only half paying attention - but it seems that Greenwald let it fly that Snowden may have the cover names/business for a lot people thus putting a huge target on Snowden's back for anyone who wants that list and could then blame it on the US

MAla, I owe you a beer:

Manson was on the cover of Rolling Stone. That people are more concerned with how a cover looks as opposed to the actual story in the printed publication says more about America than many might realize.

Good on Rolling stone for knowing this and creating enough controversy that people might actually start reading again -- instead of as the phrase goes: judging a book by its cover.

I'm sure the people of Boston have far more important problems to deal with -- the very reason why the ARTICLE is important.

Der Spiegel published an article a few weeks ago that said thathey wouldn't be published what they were given as it would put NSA employee's lives in danger.

How in the nine circles of Hell would Snowden have that information? 1. The NSA doesn't do covert intelligence, they do signals intelligence. 2. How did have access to the CIA database (if there is one) of covert agents? 3. Greenwald is being played if you ask me.

If Snowden fancy's himself a hacker he might be inflating his status by saying he has those names. Heard on Bill Press this morning the he's said if anything happens to him he has enough to take down the US.
