What is the outrage du jour? I'm still contemplating this nugget that Scoop shared with us:

Outrage Tourist
people who are angry at the state of things, and just itching for more excuses to rage, and Greenwald delivers. over and over, he posts articles that are designed to just make your blood boil if you're on his ideological side, which is the exact same thing that conservative talk show hosts do.

It's very thought provoking and I think it is worth delving into more. That said I'm still outraged over Oprah and her 38 thousand dollar purse that she didn't buy.

Does Outrage Tourism diminish our ability to think rationally and discuss things objectively? Do we seek outrage or are we seeking solutions?

Morning

A 38K handbag is just crazy, and trust me I'm a bag hag. I have problems justifying spending 100 on a purse and I only have 1 of those (though I'm considering a nice new leather Fossil bag)

Agreed about the price, but there are people that are more outraged over a billionaire being told they can't look at a handbag than say:

Yesterday's blog pointing out how many Americans have died from guns.

Mornin' all..

Raine, I was following up on your suggestion to come up with a good definition of outrage tourist for UD when I remembered something I'd seen in a movie.. not quite the same, but along the same line:

Outrage Tourism is probably it.

How many of us out there must be the center of everything? (I'm a Leo - it runs in the Zodiac sign.)

But my outlet is Scouting - I CAN be the center of everything when I have a Cubmatser's uniform on, and the bonus is it's for the greater good.

I am the exception, though. Think of how many people cut you off in their BMWs this morning on the way to work because I HAVE TO BE FIRST AND FUCK EVERYTHING ELSE.

So now there's an official term for this, eh?

yeah, the whole thing is kind of crazy when you look at the big picture. I just can't look at the big picture anymore cause its really depressing. I don't want to curl up in bed in tears over a future that because of the selfishness of others, who want to hurt people just to get what they want, is becoming rather sad and painful.

Exactly! Now, I want to be clear -- having a cause is important. I wonder tho, at what point does constant outrage just become exhausting and forgotten about?

I'm think about a blog I posted early last year. Lafayette or Tahrir square was the name. It was about Occupy. I don;t want to give the impression that we shouldn't be passionate, but I think there is something to be said about those that fan the emotions just for the sake of doing so -- As you said, there are a number of issues that I ideologically agree with Greenwald on -- but, there is something about the way he does what he does that makes him seem more opportunistic than genuinely concerned about his issues. At that point I wonder -- is he a journalist or an activist?

Can one be both? I asked this of Bob last night, and he said yes, and used documentarians as a very good example. Is greenwald a journalist?

This is an interesting study released in 2011 , based upon 10 weeks of listening to radio content in 2009:

“Outrage discourse” was found in 100% of cable TV episodes, 98.8% of talk radio programs, and 82.8% of blog posts. On average, examples occurred once during every 90 to 100 seconds of political programming on TV and even more often on radio.

The form of outrage discourse used most often was mockery, followed by misrepresentative exaggeration, insulting language and name calling.

While the tactics used by liberal and conservative commentators are largely the same, incidents of outrage were 50% more common in right-leaning media than in left-leaning media.

Direct confrontation (“sparring”) was rare, most likely due to the lack of opposing voices within individual programs.

Syndicated newspaper columnists used outrage discourse much less frequently than other media analyzed, but more frequently compared to columns from 1955 and 1975.

Say, Mrs. TriSec will soon be starting a new job in the Boston Archdiocese (Our Lady's Academy, Waltham.)

Unfortunately, this means we can no longer use birth control, have IVF, get abortions, or marry gays, but I think we'll survive.

(Yes, and people have been fired from Catholic employ for all these things.)

Actually, it's a "Typhoid Mary" kind of thing. With Mrs. TriSec working for another school, and my taking on a new Scout unit, I will be exposed to kids from 5 elementary schools plus the middle school in town. I think I need a somewhat stronger defence this year.

So now, as we head down the stretch, the worst team in baseball is starting to give cause for optimism.

But I also know how the baseball gods operate...by merely thinking this, the Sux are poised to go on a 15-game losing streak, and Big Papi will be the next name on the PED scandal list, but I digress.

You know, It was Walter Pincus Who was trying very hard to debunk the bullshit WMD argument that lead us into the Iraq war.

And Sadly -- at the time it was Greenwald who initially supported the war. Reading the entire peice (from APRIL, before the snowden mess) is pretty good, but they quote from one of his books:
I had not abandoned my trust in the Bush administration. Between the president’s performance in the wake of the 9/11 attacks, the swift removal of the Taliban in Afghanistan, and the fact that I wanted the president to succeed, because my loyalty is to my country and he was the leader of my country, I still gave the administration the benefit of the doubt. I believed then that the president was entitled to have his national security judgment deferred to, and to the extent that I was able to develop a definitive view, I accepted his judgment that American security really would be enhanced by the invasion of this sovereign country.
That Greenwald would attack Pincus and call him a liar is just entirely smelly to me. Greenwald went from politically apathetic (his words) to radical in a few years.

I don't like what is happening here.

It is appropriate to be angry at what we believe is wrong. Anger was part of the feelings that motivated the Founding Fathers to declare independence.

However, anger alone is not a solution. It may spur us to seek solutions.

I think that the discussions about the NSA and surveillance are useful. Yet I find myself more interested in solutions than just being angry all the time.

For myself, I could be angry and bemoan the fact that I am stuck as a substitute teacher. However, I chose to act and even if I have not succeeded yet, it does not mean I should give up. I think we need to channel our emotions into productive ways.

The Boston Archdiocese has an extensive network, and if you've only limited your search to the public schools, it may be worth a look.

There's also the Gann Academy you might want to check.

I have applied to a few positions locally and in Boston for the Catholic Schools. Generally, they do have a good reputation. I just checked Gann Academy but no openings. (I applied to Moses Maimonides in Brookline last week.)

On a similar note, it would be useful if elected officials who are opposed to Obamacare actually knew what was in the law. Case in point Governor Shit For Brains (Rick Scott) signed a bill into law that gives health insurance companies free reign to raise rates for two years, because rates are now regulated through the ACA (they are not). So Dickbrainfucktard is going to let the consumers of Florida to be butt-sexed by the likes of Humana et al because he is stupid. Nice going chowderhead.
