I'll Often Stop and Think About Them
Author: Raine    Date: 09/11/2013 13:14:59

I miss them. I miss those glorious towers. I miss seeing the sun shine in between them. I miss seeing them glitter at night over a downtown neighborhood that closed after dark. I miss using them to guide me thru the streets of the city. It didn't matter where I was or what time of day it was, I could look up and be guided by it.

I miss the days I worked in NYC and came up out of Penn Station and saw the Twin Towers. Now that I think about it, I miss the days we called them the Twin Towers. To this day, my heart leaps when I see them in a movie or TV show. I no longer look at them with sadness. but with gratitude of having the experience of seeing them. They were a part of my life. It took a long time, and I am not closed off to the sadness of that day, but I am at a place where I just miss those towers.

I don't have much more to say. Once again, as it did a few years ago, this song comes to mind.

There are places I remember
All my life, though some have changed
Some forever, not for better
Some have gone and some remain

All these places had their moments
With lovers and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life I've loved them all

But of all these friends and lovers
There is no one compares with you
And these memories lose their meaning
When I think of love as something new

Though I know I'll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I'll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more

Though I know I'll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I'll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more
In my life I love you more

Good morning. I saw Tri's Facebook status this morning which said, "I remember, but I don't obsess." Which is what I am trying to do today as well. I read this very interesting essay about Danny Lewin. He was possibly the first victim of the attacks.

I am already sick of the barrage of "never forget!" from people who only saw it on TV

Yes, 9/11 pornographers.

I added a few pictures and edited a bit. Added a title as well.

I'm in the not obsessing mode to be honest. I really just miss seeing them.

btw - got pretty much push polled on a local election survey last night. They called after the Presidents speech so that's what I thought I was going to be surveyed about (always wanted to get one of those calls - I've seen too much West Wing). Anyway started out like a normal survey they the dropped a bomb in the middle and asked me if the local Dem candidate (Richard Cabellos) had been arrested 30 times and had DUI's would I still vote for him. Busted out laughing and said yes. Asked if she knew who was paying for the survey, she said she didn't know but since she was laughing too I got the feeling she thought it was rather push-poll-y too.

Raine, for you the Towers were a real thing, they were part of the environment in which you worked and played as it were. You saw them every day, you saw them misted with rain, you saw them dappled with the rising or setting sun, you saw them in snow, they were there and they were real. The Towers for many Americans are the abstract symbol of payback. Those are the people who are obsessing. You are missing your old friends.

Wow... That is some crazy polling.

They should have simply asked:
When did you stop beating your wife?

IKR, started out with general questions about the Pres stuff, then it was like If you knew Jackson Miller beat back a horde of zombies to save babies would you be more likely to vote for him and if you knew Cabellos drove over puppies to get to a bar would you still vote for him.

It really got ridiculously funny.

Hi all.

You know the drill. Today is the only day of the year I don't look up when I hear an aero engine. I pray for rain and clouds every year...I was rewarded with a thick, whitish haze locally today.

I was at work - didn't see the attacks unfold live on TV, but then again I have a dear friend who was in the North Tower and lived to tell the tale, so I feel connected, at least peripherally.

And as a Bostonian, I still feel that NYC will never look the same from the GWB or Jersey Turnpike when we drive by headed somewhere else.

I was tempted to write about the President's speech today, but well -- it's that day.

Anyway, for those that listened to the Presidents speech last night there was an interesting nugget.
That’s my judgment as Commander-in-Chief. But I’m also the President of the world’s oldest constitutional democracy. So even though I possess the authority to order military strikes, I believed it was right, in the absence of a direct or imminent threat to our security, to take this debate to Congress. I believe our democracy is stronger when the President acts with the support of Congress. And I believe that America acts more effectively abroad when we stand together.

This is especially true after a decade that put more and more war-making power in the hands of the President, and more and more burdens on the shoulders of our troops, while sidelining the people’s representatives from the critical decisions about when we use force.
He believes he has the authority to act, but believes that congress should decide. This is basically a rejection of the Unitary Executive doctrine. You'll recall we had some serious debates about this doctrine during the previous administration. (Read the whole thing... lotsa interesting things in there)
Statement by the President, November 4, 2002: "The executive branch shall construe section 530D of title 28, and related provisions in section 202 of the Act, in a manner consistent with the constitutional authorities of the President to supervise the unitary executive branch and to withhold information the disclosure of which could impair foreign relations, the national security, the deliberative processes of the Executive, or the performance of the Executive's constitutional duties."
Here is the basic Theory, from Wikipedia:
The unitary executive theory is a theory of American constitutional law holding that the President controls the entire executive branch. The doctrine is based upon Article Two of the United States Constitution, which vests "the executive power" of the United States in the President.

Although that general principle is widely accepted, there is disagreement about the strength and scope of the doctrine. It can be said that some favor a "strongly unitary" executive, while others favor a "weakly unitary" executive. The former group argue, for example, that Congress's power to interfere with intra-executive decision-making (such as firing executive branch officials) is limited, and that the President can control policy-making by all executive agencies within the limits set for those agencies by Congress. Still others agree that the Constitution requires a unitary executive, but believe this is a bad thing, and propose its abolition by constitutional amendment.
You remember Bush and his signing statements? He loved them so much he signed over 120 of them. At least one of them was regarding Syria.
It is hard to imagine a sharper contrast between Obama’s approach on Syria and the one George W. Bush outlined in a signing statement a decade ago, when he signed the Syria Accountability and Lebanese Sovereignty Restoration Act of 2003 on Dec. 12. Bush repeatedly used signing statements as levers to enhance his executive authority, and the Syria Accountability Act provides a vivid illustration of how closely he guarded the right to set U.S. foreign policy on his own terms.

The measure aimed to combat Syria’s support for terrorism by imposing sanctions, but Bush made it clear he would pursue whatever policy he saw fit.

Noting that one section requires the president “to take certain actions against Syria unless the President either determines and certifies to the Congress that the Government of Syria has taken specific actions,” the statement continues, “A law cannot burden or infringe the President’s exercise of a core constitutional power by attaching conditions precedent to the use of that power.”

LAst night, President Obama made it clear that the responsibility should be on Congress. That is a pretty big deal. It's the second time I've seen this President give up some of the power of the executive office. Last May I wrote that the President called for the end of the AUMF. Powers given to the previous administration should never have been given. This is the beginning of a serious reset and I for one believe this is a good thing.

I could actually, I'd rather put something more comprehensive.

It didn't click last night, but after doing some research -- this is what he has done. All of the crazy power that Bush/Cheney decided to take, some of that the President is saying it's not his to have.

I believe I have mentioned this previously....The twin towers and I were contemporaries, as the wiki article notes: "Groundbreaking was on August 5, 1966"...whereas TriSec's own debut was just 3 days later.

I know that his estranged wife didn;t press charges and that is why he hasn't been brought into custody. That said -- take a look at this. What was it that Zimmerman dropped on the ground?

Oh and his lawyer quit Zimmy.
