It's a tragedy.
Author: Raine    Date: 09/18/2013 12:59:06

These are considered the 'worst mass killings' in America. It doesn't include multiple homicides.

Simple numbers and years:

1991: 23
1999: 15
1999: 12 + (His family was killed before the shooting)
2005: 10
2007: 32
2008: 9
2009: 11
2009: 8
2009: 14
2009: 13
2010: 9
2011: 8
2012: 7
2012: 12
2012: 27
2013: 6
Tuesday: 13.

When 13 people are killed with a gun all at once, it's a national tragedy. Rightfully so -- it's shocking and horrible. It happened all at once, instead of the usual drip drip drip of death. It's shocking.

As of today, it is estimated that "roughly 24,680 people have died from guns in the United States since the Newtown shootings."

The real tragedy here is that nearly 25 thousand people are dead in the months since the Newtown shooting. When an average of 30 people are killed in 24 hours, that's not a tragedy.

It's just another day in America.

and
Raine

I am still unsure about the shooter. Clearly he was ill, but I don't think the bar was set that he should not have been given a clearance. As I said last night -- his work was in IT -- he wasn't supposed to be around guns.

He was in the navy reserves-- and they wanted to discharge him but he still went just under the radar and they gave him honorable. He wasn't diagnosed with PTSD and even if he was, it doesn't necessarily disqualify a person from getting a clearance. As has been evidenced from Tri's many years of writing Ask A vet -- we should be encouraging our vets to come forward with problems so it doesn't end their careers --

Technically speaking the shooter wasn't a criminal until he killed people.

They were talking about his descent in paranoid schizophrenia on the News Hour last night and NPR mosheen this morning. Being insane isn't a reason for a dishonorable discharge, a medical one yes, but not dishonorable one.

This article is gets to what I am trying to say about clearances.

Individuals who have security clearances don’t necessarily have “perfect” records, as the massive defense contractor Northrop Grumman wrote in a brochure for new employees in September 2010. All go through an investigation process, during which the Office of Personnel Management or another government agency looks into the applicant’s police and credit records. Applicants must also submit a detailed account of their employment, financial and personal histories, including any debts or foreign contacts they may have.

Even then, however, investigators are evaluating whether an individual is trustworthy — a subjective standard that leaves plenty of room for interpretation. OPM says that negative information, including arrests, can be mitigated by “recency, seriousness [and] relevance to the position and duties.” Investigators have, on appeal, granted clearances to people with histories of alcoholism, drug use, criminal conduct and significant, delinquent debts. Northrop Grumman gives these guidelines about Department of Defense clearances to its employees:

I was reading this from a person, former Marine and now a contractor -- he said some very enlightening things about the clearance process:
It's not meant to weed out people who are intrinsically dangerous sociopathic assholes. It's meant to weed out otherwise good people who can be blackmailed by another country into giving away government secrets.

It may find the intrinsically dangerous sociopathic assholes, but that's not what it's set up for.

Exactly -- and yet, he wasn't diagnosed -- for whatever reason.

They gave him drugs on two occasions and sent him on his way -- now here is the thing, at this point he was a Vet. Is it the responsibility of the VA to report that to a person's employer?

I think that there are laws against that. This is the slippery slope I suppose that concerns me.

I believe ALL guns sales should have at least a 72 hour waiting period -- in this case, he didn't have an arrest record. HE had brushes with the law, yes -- but no arrest record.

I was under the impression that he was given a general discharge. Unless new information has come up.

If it was possible that a shooter/gun nut's only victims were other gun nuts, I would just say "please proceed"

Fingers crossed for Mrs. Rabbit as she goes for a real live job interview for a "real job" this afternoon.

Lucky appears to be holding his own for now. His comfort food is tuna, and he's continually eating. I've instructed Mrs. Rabbit to get some tuna cat food to mix with the tuna so at least he's getting some vital nutrients human food does not have. Tommorow I have the pleasure of being instructed in the finer points of performing Sub-Q fluid injections on a cat.

For the time being, he's not in much condition to fight me. But yes, as he gets better this will be a concern. He HATES being pilled. God knows what he'll think of an injection. Though the vet said he offered no resistance and most cats tolerate the injection well as long as the injector isn't a bundle of nerves and the cat picks up on that.

Right now he's pissed that he's being confined to the computer room. But I can't let the other cats eat his food.

In general, Muslim men are often difficult to distinguish when out and about. Women are much easier to identify. I always make it a point to go out of my way at the Bean Factory and greet them with a smile and "Salaam Alaykum". I've gotten sales from that alone.

There is a secret handshake, you know.

Speaking of background checks, has anyone out there been "CORI'd"?

It's a Criminal Offender Record Information request here in this Commonwealth. It's required for any and all adult volunteers in any youth group.

There's only one problem - it doesn't return any information if you haven't been caught. There was an infamous case here in Scouts a few years ago. I won't go into the gory details, but the gentleman was 'clean' until he was picked up.

The hell of it is, I knew him quite well, and we all thought he was a good leader and was "good with the boys". How little we actually knew.

So....like security clearance, I suppose your mileage may vary. It's not going to catch 'new' offenders, or even prevent repeat offenders from doing what they do.

What is this all about?

It was once known as the Piaget Building because the Swiss jeweler used to have offices in the skyscraper near Rockefeller Center.

In the near future, it will be known as property of the federal government.

U.S. District Judge Katherine Forrest has granted a summary judgment that clears the way for the government to seize the 36-story office building owned by a corporation and foundation with ties to the Iranian government. The move is the latest chapter in a short but storied history that includes design by John Carl Warnecke, the same architect who drew up the John F. Kennedy Eternal Flame gravesite at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, Logan International Airport in Boston and the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.

A statement by the U.S. Justice Department says the ruling "paves the way for the largest-ever terrorism-related forfeiture."

Good morning, bloggers!!

I hope everyone is well. I have to take my sister in law's Dad to kidney dialysis at a local VA hospital, so I am bringing a lot to read with me.

I am tired of the shootings. There is hardly a day where there is not a shooting in the Chicago area, and it seems we now have a mass shooting every few weeks. I am embarrassed for my country.

Don't you think Boeing should fix the Model 8 before launching the Model 9?

(Although militarily speaking, a different version often addresses the problems and shortcomings of earlier versions, as the B-17D, E, F, and G models can attest.)

American Guns
Some want us all to carry
The cost is too high

More bleeding bodies
Right in the backyard of those
Who twiddle their thumbs

More names on the list
Not casualties of a war
But right here at home

I skip this aisle because I'm not rich enough to have dietary restrictions. Ever notice that you don't meet poor people with special diet needs? A gluten intolerant house cleaner? A cab driver with Candida? Candida is what I call a rich, white person problem. You know you've really made it in this world when you get Candida. My personal theory is that Candida is something you get from too much hot yoga. All I'm saying is if I were a yeast, I would want to live in your yoga pants.
I'm dying here.

Oh well hay....

A bankster is going to jail. 17 years...

U.S. District Judge Raymond A. Jackson did not impose a fine, which could have reached $4 billion, but ordered Fields to pay $331 million in restitution, which nears the total loss for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.

The judge also ordered Fields to forfeit $61.6 million, which is the total of the bad loans tied to him. He also put Fields on five years of probation following prison and ordered him not to work in the banking industry during that time.
