Thank a Veteran
Author: BobR    Date: 2013-11-11 12:01:03

It's Veteran's Day and I've had one helluva weekend. Not as bad as these guys did, but I am in no mental condition to write a blog today. So please - thank a veteran for doing the heavy lifting for the rest of us.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place, and in the sky,
The larks, still bravely singing, fly,
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead; short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe!
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high!
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Lt Col John McCrae CEF, May 3, 1915

Nothing inspires confidence in a product like seeing it heavily advertised on basic cable. That and the talking animated liver.

Morning, comrades.

Just back from burning flags in front of Veterans this morning.

The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.

They also helped...along with Cub Scouts, Re-enactors, and some active duty personnel.

Mornin' all..

Well, I didn't do well this weekend in the tournaments I played in. However, it was due to variance not bad play.

Depends on if I can find a few hours to spend at a movie theatre, so many things to get done at the house.

Damn Massachusetts commies! Showing proper respect and disposal for tattered, worn flags! Down here is the real Murrica, we leave faded, torn flags out in all kinds of weather just like God commanded!

Good morning, bloggers!! As my schools are closed today, I am taking my sister in law's Dad to a VA hospital for kidney dialysis.

There are several places offering discounts or even free meals to veterans today. So, let them know.

Saturday, we arrived in Rockville for the BURP beer club annual 'real ale' competition/meeting. (We had a food drive for the boy scouts, btw... )

We decided to stay the night -- the fire pit was lit at about 6 pm. By 8-9 pm, scotch awhickey and real rum tasting happned. I think we went to bed after drinking with our hippie friends after 12 hours (bob and I were among the youngin' crew!)

Got home about 11 am the next morn -- to a kizzie dog that cannot go 24 hours without her meds. -- she's ok now, but we did come home to a scary situation. She's a special needs baby now, it is official.

We got her cleaned up and felt comfortable enough to head out to go watch the football games, and that was (as y'all may know) the moment I found out our freind Donnie had passed. Mondo -- I think you may have met him -- Chis and Donnie were the couple that lived directly above us in our Atlanta Apt.

So a cry happened. We went to watch the game. I. already exhausted not with extra puffy tear face -- went to the bbq joint. LOVED seeing people we know to watch the game with. In between all of this, My very dear and much loved friend from college was going to be coming into town as a stopover from her home Portland, Maine to visit her parents in South Carolina.

Was exhausted from sheer tired-ness and post beer-a-thon and losing a friend -- I can say that sometimes things happen that are near magical. I loved seeing Kit.

It was so awesome to just talk with a fellow non parental unit my age and laugh for hours. The only reason we went to bed was that our once young and sprite bladders are now middle aged. I swear -- we had a *beer* moment -- we said it the same time --* I gotta pee, and I don't wanna walk back down(me)/back up (her) the stairs so I'm gonna call it a night*

We looked at each other and giggled like college days. Good lord, after all the crap that has happened this year, I needed an evening like that. She left about an hour ago.

Talk about a weekend filled of everything that could possibly be tossed in.

I think he does two or three days a week. I don't know if he's on the road since sometimes the TV show is done elsewhere.

I don;t mind Mike Rogers. I think that Ed is trying to keep the radio brand but I just don't think he can keep doing both.

Pisses me off knowing that Randi might be leaving altogether -- she could fill that void should Ed leave.

Knew Randi was leaving when she said she bought a place in Costa Rica.

Seems to me, everyone is burning out. No one can sustain that level of rage and intensity all the time.

I like Mike Rogers too - seems very even keeled

This story really pisses me off. I mean, Turner Field is not even 20 years old and it's now the second such structure in Atlanta to get the "it's too old" heave-ho (see "Georgia Dome"). The excuses I have heard so far is that The Ted has terrible parking (so make some more parking room or - here's a bright idea - encourage people to use PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION to and from the games!), the "bad neighborhood" (aka "in case you haven't noticed, they're black"), and the plumbing and lighting that officials estimate would cost $250 million to upgrade (a BS figure if I heard one, but still seems cheaper than building a 600 million+ facility in Cobb County).

I really like The Ted. I thought it was a great reuse of the Olympic Stadium from '96, and it was a vast improvement over Fulton County Stadium. It just pisses me off that Georgia can see fit to build TWO new stadiums to make more skyboxes for corporate entertaining (which is what this is all about when you get down to it) but won't do a damn thing to help the poor living in these facilities' shadows.

to you and extra for Kizzie.

Our first cat, Buddy was one that needed twice daily meds, though I suppose if they had to be skipped it would not be life threatening. I shuddered at the thought of giving Lucky anything, because it was a battle if it couldn't be put in his food. My thumb started throbbing at the thought of him clamping down on it as hard as he could.

Is it just me or does the Atlanta metro area spend an enormous amount of time and energy coming up with ways to make traffic worse?

That is a growth industry in the ATL. I'm convinced that it's a plot to make transplanted Bostonians nostalgic for the Big Dig.

They seem to get something fixed, get the traffic moving then, give themselves a bunch of high fives for fixing the problem, then do something stupid to dropping a stadium right smack dab next to the interstate. No not just a stadium but a mixed use complex! Right there on the Beltway! More sprawl! Smart move Atlanta!

Another thought on the new home for The Braves, how far did Cobb county bend over to please the Braves? What kind of burden is the county taking on for this privilege? Tax breaks etc?
Cobb county is teatard heaven. They HATE taxes. (Clint, Bob back me up here)

I suspect a VERY, VERY back room deal here. Someone is making much money off of this deal.

I'm sure the residents of the county have no idea what's about to hit them. I also suspect, as our friend said on fb: there is virtually NO alternate to 75N, given the existence of a fucking RIVER that has to be crossed. This is so horrible on every level.

It's going to be a nightmare. I have never seen such a clusterpluck pro sports decision as this -- and that includes the idiotic stadium that the falcons will build.

At least the Yankees built the new stadium in the bronx - right near the old stadium. a new subway stop and the area is gentrifying.

You know, the torch is why Atlanta does things like tearing down perfectly good ballparks, right?

Seriously -- it's the post civil war mentality -- build it -- tear it down, becuase why not.
