Keeping them Guessing

I've heard it said that living well and enjoying life is the best revenge. Against whom, you might ask? Against all of the frowny-faced bitter people that just aren't happy when other people are happy. As we all know - there are a bunch of people who aren't happy when President Obama is happy, or doing well, or succeeding. They are all ready with a freeze frame photo (occasionally doctored) that shows how disrespectful or angry or "black man" he is. Naturally, a state visit to South Africa for Nelson Mandela's internment fits the bill.

That funeral hasn't happened yet. What did occur yesterday was a celebration of Nelson Mandela's life. This is not unlike an Irish Wake, where people get together and have a party and reminisce about all the good things. It is not a somber occasion. That did not stop the haters from venting their spleens in personal umbrage to what they felt was a less than docorous display from the president.

Like everything else he does, it was analyzed beneath the microscope of the media noise machine:
President Barack Obama's gestures at Nelson Mandela's memorial service in Johannesburg were widely scrutinized on the world's stage Tuesday.

First, Obama shook hands with Cuban President Raul Castro as the U.S. president approached the podium at the soccer stadium to address Mandela's mourners. The brief exchange, captured on video and photographs, sparked an immediate reaction online and on TV, with cable news pundits and Twitter users debating the significance of warmth shown between leaders of countries that have not had formal diplomatic relations since 1959.
[..]
At another point, President Obama posed for a "selfie" from his seat at the memorial with British Prime Minister David Cameron and Denmark's Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt. First lady Michelle Obama[..] did not participate.

John McCain reacted much like most of the right-wing blatherers:
Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) on Tuesday suggested that President Barack Obama’s handshake with Cuban President Raul Castro was like shaking hands with Adolf Hitler.
[..]
“It gives Raul some propaganda to continue to prop up dictatorial, brutal regime, that’s all it is,” the Arizona Republican insisted. “Why should you shake hands with somebody who’s keeping Americans in prison?”

Nothing like going Godwin right off the bat. Yes, Raul Castro is exactly like Hitler, except for the whole genocide thing and the deaths of millions based solely on their race.

Unfortunately, instead of telling McCain and his fellow knee-jerk reactionaries what mental midgets they are, the White House instead decided to take the weak way out:
President Barack Obama's handshake with Cuban President Raul Castro at Nelson Mandela's memorial service was simply a nicety, the White House says, not a sign that the U.S. is considering a further thawing of relations with Cuba.
[..]
Rhodes said Obama shook hands with a number of foreign leaders and none of the exchanges were planned ahead of time: "What people need to remember is that today was about Nelson Mandela," he said. "That's where the president's focus was, not on any political or policy matter."

That's a shame - I would like tourism to Cuba become an option once more. I would love to get some good Cuban cigars. Hey - it's all about what I want, right?

Along with all of the living presidents (except George the senior, likely too feeble to travel), Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) of all people also went to S. Africa. It seems odd to have Republicans like Cruz and Newt Gingrich voice support for the good that Mandela did when so many of their party members at one time (and still do) considered Mandela to be a terrorist. Cruz is certainly taking a lot of flak for his support of Mandela, and Gingrich is telling the tea party they are idiots for not supporting Mandela's actions.

Maybe it's all by design. While all this hullaballoo is occurring, the Senate is quietly getting very close to passing a long term budget proposal that will eliminate the 11th hour budget stalemate resolutions that have become all too commonplace. The problem, of course, is the optics of it. With 2014 primaries just a few months away, Republicans are all too mindful of rabid extreme conservatives running against established "mainstream" Republican incumbants.

The president doesn't have to campaign again. Ted Cruz does; Newt Gingrich might. Perhaps they should take a cue from the president and just smile and go their own way. They're going to get blasted anyway - might as well make their critics wonder what's going on.

Mornin' all..

Well it looks the masses chose Pope Francis at Time's Person of the Year. I'm REALLY glad it wasn't Snowden or Cruz.

Morning

Apparently everyone forgot how to drive in the 2 snow days 90% of the area got - took me 2 hours to get to work since I had to take the long way (which only adds 15 minutes to my commute normally). I hate 28.

I guess yesterday was slow news day since there has been a lot of discussion about a handshake and selfie. Jesus.

Morning, comrades.

Ya know, Adolf Hitler turned 50 back in 1938. Pretty much most of Europe, including the American Ambassador to Great Britain, signed the "birthday book" in the German embassy at the time. Don't recall much backlash regarding a diplomatic gesture then.

"Sometimes a Handshake is just a Handshake", to paraphrase the well-known saying. There are certain standards of etiquette and protocol that simply MUST be followed without creating another diplomatic incident in turn.

Well that's one way to kill the fun. and this:

How is one to get to the game then? "You cannot walk to the Super Bowl," Kelly said. So that’s out. You also can’t get dropped off unless you have a parking pass, which sort of defeats the point. The only other options for actually getting to the game are New Jersey Transit and a $50-plus shuttle from nine locations around the region.

BTW, in addition to Javi flourishing with new Troop numbers on his sleeve, Your Loyal Trisec is rather enjoying being a member of the committee again, too.

We're away this weekend; headed out for a winter excursion at our summer camp, so Saturday's blog is available. We do offer generous financing terms.

you know what else is going to kill the so-called fun - the blizzard that's going to hit NJ that day.

I don't even like football and I have to wonder what idiot decided NJ in Feb in an open air stadium for the Superbowl.

Robert Kraft.

He badly wants to have a Superbowl in Foxboro. He pushed the NJ event through the governing council. If it is a succesful event in a cold-weather, open-air stadium, expect to see Gillette Stadium as your site within 2 years.

If it fails, he won't take the fall for it, and it's back to New Orleans.

For all my home state pride, even I question the logic of a Northern Superbowl outdoors.

Yes it's fun to watch football in the snow, but 50 bucks for a damn shuttle bus? They aren't making all the parking facilities available? Meh. I'm glad the Giants are out of the running now.

I still predict Paul Ryan will be named speaker of the house. Especially after reading this piece.
But in a Congress that measures success in how few days its incompetence results in a government shutdown, the Ryan-Murray deal marks a legislative high-water mark.

Indeed, Ryan has succeeded where his party’s official leadership has failed since taking control of the House three years ago: Speaker John Boehner, Majority Leader Eric Cantor, and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, all of whom are master politicians, have tried, and failed, to cut agreements large and small to avoid another round of legislating by crisis.

We were talking about this last night on the IRC.. Ryan's positioning himself as someone who can actually make deals & get things done, which goes right at Boehner (and Cantor who's pulling the strings). He's also started 'renouncing teh crazy' in recent weeks. I think he's laying the groundwork for a serious run at the Speaker's position, should the GOP retain control of the House.

Good day, folks. It looks like this coming Superbowl will if anything solidify it as an event by the rich for the rich with the ticket prices and all the regulations for anyone who actually wants to attend the game. The NFL is probably happy with the unwashed masses sticking to watching the game on TV so that they can see the commercials where the network carrying the game now charges $3,000,0000 for a 30-second spot.

And let's face it, China is "communist" in name only with the kind of economic conditions in China today being what communists and Marxists use to attack other regimes for doing.

Once again, Greenwald confirms to everyone that he is a self-absorbed hack.

But he's not the only one - I've seen whiny people (mostly Snowden lovers) commenting all over the place about the TIME Magazine's horrendous decision! HEY DUMBASSES WAKE UP! They gave that up when they switched from an editorial decision based on worldwide newsworthiness to this terrible internet-based popularity contest model several years ago.

That said, the people who actually voted made the right choice this year. Despite the newsworthiness of the Snowden/NSA story (and whether you think he's a hero or traitor for his actions), Pope Francis has had a much wider impact on a global scale this year and will continue to actively have that impact for several years to come, especially if his words lead to tangible action and positive reforms within the Roman Catholic Church.

I was under the impression that it was ultimately Time that made the choice.

Either way, Snowden was second -- so yes, Greenwald is starting to look like a Snowden fanboi.

It's supposed to be about the story not the personality, didn't Glenn say that?
