It's a sad day in America. At least - it's sad for me. I am sad because I feel compelled to write a blog about an ignorant racist and bigot that people who should know better are holding up as some sort of martyr to "free speech". I don't watch any of those mind-numbing reality shows. Reality for me is my life. I don't need to vicariously live someone else's life. I am not that much of a voyeur that I need to see how other people live their lives (knowing full well they are being filmed for TV). I don't get it.

But some people do watch these shows, and get so attached to the people on them, they start to feel for them like they are part of their own family. Who doesn't have a redneck uncle that spouts off about the gays and sinners and other nonsense? Of course, the reality is that these are NOT our family members - they are employees of A&E, and are being paid to bring ratings and sponsors to A&E. If A&E feels someone on the show has damaged that relationship, then they have to go where their wallets tell them to go. Plenty of TV shows get cancelled all the time for the simple reason of poor ratings and/or the inability to sell commercial time.

People are attached, though, and the news and the internets are ablaze with people supporting them. They like the raw honesty and good ol' downhomesiness of the family. Salt of the earth, good people, not like these kind of people:

http://starcasm.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/beardless-Robertsons-490x367.jpg

or these people:

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2013/10/17/article-2465571-18CDA38900000578-920_634x437.jpg

Oh wait - yes, they ARE that kind of people. Or at least they were until someone (either them or A&E) decided this was a better look for them:

http://media3.s-nbcnews.com/j/streams/2013/October/131017/8C9410061-131017-ent-duckdynasty2-hmed.blocks_desktop_medium.jpg

I have to wonder - how did they grow those long beards so quickly? Could they be fake? What else could be fake with the show? Like I said, I don't watch it, but there's certainly an interesting back story to these "characters" (and I say that in the literal way, because they seem to be cut straight out of central type-casting).

So these self-made millionaires decided to look like trailer trash and have a TV show to dupe thousands of viewers into identifying with their fake unassuming ways. The only thing real that seems to have come from this reality show is the disgusting biases of the patriarch. Let's look at what he actually said:
"I never, with my eyes, saw the mistreatment of any black person. Not once," the reality star said of growing up in pre-Civil-Rights-era Louisiana. "Where we lived was all farmers. The blacks worked for the farmers. I hoed cotton with them. I'm with the blacks, because we're white trash. We're going across the field ... They're singing and happy. I never heard one of them, one black person, say, 'I tell you what: These doggone white people' — not a word!"

Robertson continued, "Pre-entitlement, pre-welfare, you say: Were they happy? They were godly; they were happy; no one was singing the blues."

It's not the first time he's said things like this:
A 3-year-old video shows “Duck Dynasty” star Phil Robertson demonizing LGBT people as “insolent” and “evil.”
[...]
“First they say, ‘There is no God. Get him out of your mind,’” Robertson said, waving a Bible. “Then they bow down to birds, animals and reptiles, and each other, and the first thing you see coming out of that book is gross sexual immorality.”

“They will dishonor their bodies with one another, degrade each other,..."
[...]
“Women with women, men with men, they committed indecent acts with one another, and they received in themselves the due penalty for their perversions,” Robertson said. “They’re full of murder, envy, strife, hatred. They are insolent, arrogant, God-haters. They are heartless, they are faithless, they are senseless, they are ruthless. They invent ways of doing evil."

This is what everyone wants to support? People are outraged that a cable channel is suspending (not firing) one of the members of a fake reality show for making comments like this? Really??

Maybe I SHOULD immerse myself in "reality" TV - the real world and all the people in it are starting to scare me.

Dear Southern Bloggers:

I so do not get "Red Velvet Cake". It's icky. But what do you want from me, I'm a Yankee.

Tri, I am in agreement. Red velvet cake the baked item equivalent of painting of kids with big eyes, spooky. No sir, I don't like it.

So I have a friend who teaches English in a middle school. This was a status update she did the other day:

Yesterday I let my study block listen to Christmas music. About ten seconds in, my Tourette's kid blurts (loudly), "This is crap!" Yeah, that went well.

buttermilk and or vinegar and baking soda. It's supposed to have has very little cocoa in it. usually pecans.

Cream cheese icing is the topping

Yeah the original red velvet recipe originally used little to no food coloring - the reaction of vinegar and buttermilk with cocoa brought out the red color. That changed with the rise of dutch-process cocoa tho.

Have you ever had buttermilk biscuits? Same principal. Mass-market buttermilk is made by adding vinegar or citric acid (lemon juice) to milk.

In the end, you don't taste the vinegar - it chemically combines with the baking soda to create CO2 and water.

Good morning, folks. I am debating whether or not to get a Roku now myself. Granted, I get Free Speech TV on DirecTV so I can watch Momma that way. I may be interested in getting it so I can view the international news channels that I don't get on DirecTV or FiOS since some of them can be streamed through the Roku (ie RT, EuroNews, France 24). I will still pass on The Blaze unless I want to watch a train wreck.

Let me just put in a word here. I've been using an AppleTV for a while now (not too bad, though I wish they'd get more channels). A few days ago, I was logging into the internets when a message popped up from Comcast saying that we had nearly used up our 300 gig bandwidth limit for the month. Apparently they decided to get more aggressive in this now, but it seems that it's a tactic to keep people from "overusing" (read, using) streaming devices to watch movies and television.
