Wednesday News Dump

I'm a little short on time today, so this will be a quick one. I do not want to write about the Chris Christie scandal today. So - as part of our continuing coverage of the crazies within the Republican party, here are a couple stories that may have slipped under the radar.

In the "destroy everything the unions gave us" category, I give you exhibit A - Wisconsin Republicans propose 7 day work week:
A pair of Republican legislators in Wisconsin are circulating a draft of a bill that would allow a 7-day work week for the state’s workers. According to the Stephen Points Journal newspaper, the two lawmakers are floating the bill on behalf of the state’s largest anti-union business lobby, Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce.

The bill is a “slap in the face” to the state’s public labor unions, which lost most of their power when Gov. Scott Walker ® stripped them of their ability to bargain collectively in 2011. It was proposed by state Sens. Glenn Grothman ® of West Bend and Mark Born ® of Beaver Dam.
[...]
Conservatives say that workers will only have to forego their rest days if they volunteer, but the law’s opponents argue that businesses could create environments that are hostile to workers who insist on their rights. Workers who take their mandated rest days could be skipped over for promotion, denied privileges allowed to workers who work a 7-day week or could see sharp reductions in their schedules until they no longer have enough hours to make ends meet, financially.

Next on the chopping block - eliminating child labor laws (don't laugh - it's been proposed).

Down in that bastion of intellectual discourse known as South Carolina, we have a GOP candidate comparing food stamps to slavery:
The Republican primary contender — who has been endorsed by Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), Red State editor Erick Erickson and conservative pundit Ann Coulter – said the federal government doesn’t have the authority to spend tax money helping poor families obtain food.

“We’re taking our plunder, that’s taken from us as individuals, [giving] it to the government, and the government is now keeping itself in power by giving these goodies away,” Brannon said. “The answer is the Department of Agriculture should go away at the federal level. And now 80 percent of the farm bill was food stamps. That enslaves people.”

Brannon, who opposes public education as “Marxist,” instead suggested providing poor people with some means of improving their situation.

“What you want to do, it’s crazy but it’s true, teach people to fish instead of giving them fish,” Brannon said. “When you’re at the behest of somebody else, you are actually a slavery to them [sic]. You don’t need to have the government come in. That kind of charity does not make people freer.”

Well I'm glad he learned something in church - if only it was the "take care of the least among us" part.

That's it for today - it's hump day, so we have that going for us.

Mornin' all..

So I was tinkering around on LinkedIn setting up an account for the girlfriend.. I start typing "inside sales" to add to her skillset and up pops "insider trading" in the suggested box.

Would it be the anniversary of the one of, if not the worst industrial accidents in Boston history?

Not too bad. I forgot my gym bag.

Also I am having a problem with my laptop it is suddenly not connecting to the wifi at the house. I've checked the adapter and it is working. I also did a system restore, still won't connect. When I run a diagnostic after all that, it says I'm out of range. All my other devices are connected to the wifi network. What might I be missing.

The classic question: what changed?

Did you reboot your laptop?
Did you reboot your router or your modem?
Have you installed new software?
Have you changed anything physically with your laptop (such as covers or anything that could potentially interfere with the antenna)?

Have you verified your laptop can work with other wi-fi connections, such as your local coffeeshop?

Since my phone, Roku player, TV and blu-ray player all are still connected, no I didn't restart the router (Since it isn't mine to restart that is kind of difficult to do).

As I did system restore, yes the computer was rebooted. Many times, Actually.

No & No

I will be doing that tonight.

I had a laptop (from my last job) that had a little slide switch on the front that would turn the wifi on or off. I don't remember what the indication was in the control panel (if any) when it was switched off).

Yes indeedy! MIcrosoft wrote wifi drivers that apparently don't work, so you need to switch back to the OEM one.

Hmm. I upgraded to 8.1 a couple of weeks after it was released and have had no issues until yesterday. The more I think about it and talk to people I am beginning to think it is a router issue. The computer recognizes the router and the wifi network, it just won't connect to it. I think the router is not issuing an IP address for the computer.

Is the laptop network config set with a static IP address? Or - is it possible that Windows automagically ran an update overnight which overwrote your NIC driver?

We will find out when I field test it this evening. If I can't connect at they lye-berry :spit!: :ting!: :spittoon: then we have a problem with the computer. If not it is the router. Routers are easy to fix.

This is why the Onion is bar none the best satire site out there.

“Back then, if you couldn’t afford health insurance and got really sick, you went bankrupt, plain and simple,” said Dominique Otis, a Modesto, CA mother of three. “They didn’t have this whole mess of lower-cost options, or all these subsidies you might or might not qualify for based on your income. People didn’t have to deal with any of those headaches. They just went ahead and died of preventable causes.”

“Those were the good old days, ya know?” she added with a sigh.

According to nostalgic sources, there was a time when Americans who lost their jobs and the benefits that came with them simply went without insurance, and that was that. During this halcyon age there was reportedly no way anyone who was out of work could afford health care, and if people had a serious preexisting condition, they knew for certain they would never again qualify for decent coverage.

I;m really hoping this passes City Council. The mayor is on board.

D.C. Council member and mayoral candidate Tommy Wells (D-Ward 6) is leading the council’s first step toward decriminalizing marijuana in the bill expected to pass his public safety committee Wednesday.

Wells and seven others initially introduced a bill last year to limit penalties for marijuana possession to $100. After public testimony, Wells said $100 could be too punitive for poor residents and students caught with marijuana.

Under Wells’s bill, fines would be lowered to $25. Those caught smoking marijuana in public could be fined $100 and have their paraphernalia confiscated; minors would also have a letter sent home.

“We know that 90 percent of those charged for small amounts are generally young African Americans. For those, a $25 fine and losing whatever paraphernalia will be an impact,” Wells said.
