A Sorry State of Affairs
Author: BobR    Date: 2014-01-22 12:08:01

For all the attention that we pay to National/Federal politics, the "scandals" and posturing are nothing compared to what goes on at the state level. We normally don't pay much attention to politics in other states, but boy, do things go off the rails there. The Sopranos-esque shakedowns and abuses of power taking center stage in New Jersey are certainly juicy, mainly because Governor Chris Christie was being considered the front-runner for the Republican presidential candidate in 2016. That seems to be lost at this point. Still - there are other stories that are just as amazing.

Here in Virginia, new governor Terry McCauliffe hasn't had a chance to unpack yet, and already former governor Bob McDonald is in deep doo-doo. Yesterday, both he and his wife were indicted for accepting cash, gifts, etc., apparently in exchange for preferential treatment:
Former Virginia governor Robert F. McDonnell and his wife, Maureen, were charged Tuesday with illegally accepting gifts, luxury vacations and large loans from a wealthy Richmond-area businessman who sought special treatment from state government.

Authorities alleged that for nearly two years, the McDonnells hit up executive Jonnie R. Williams Sr. again and again, lodging near constant requests for large loans, clothes, trips, golf accessories and private plane rides.

In exchange, authorities allege, the McDonnells worked in concert to lend the prestige of the governorship to Williams’ struggling company, a small former cigarette manufacturer that now sells dietary supplements.

When I lived in GA, the governor of that state also went to jail for selling favors. It seems to be a common theme among governors actually.

However, it's the state legislators that really go the extra distance. In PA, just in time for MLK Jr. Day, state House rep. Gordon Denlinger (R-Lancaster) wants to free minorities from the protections of anti-discrimination laws:
Republican Rep. Gordon Denlinger, chairman of the House Subcommittee on Fiscal Policy, an elder in the Zeltenreich Reformed Church of New Holland, Pa., is circulating a memo seeking co-sponsors for his effort.

"Specifically, I plan to propose a new section in Article I - the Pennsylvania 'bill of rights' - that will prohibit government from punishing an individual or entity if the individual or entity makes hiring or other employment decisions, or provides services, accommodations (including housing accommodations), advantages, facilities, goods or privileges based on sincerely held beliefs," the memo says.

Denlinger calls his proposal the "Freedom of Conscience Amendment."

In other words, those whose conscience suggests that they act contrary to nondiscriminatory statutes are free at last, free at last, thank God almighty, free at last to do so.

Another winner on MLK Jr. Day comes from the great state of FL where a Republican candidate for the state House wants to hang President Obama:
As Americans honored the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, a Republican candidate for Florida House District 68 said President Barack Obama should be hanged for war crimes.

"I'm past impeachment," Joshua Black wrote on Twitter. "It's time to arrest and hang him high."
[...]
Hours after the tweet, Black defended his comment. Obama should be held responsible for ordering a drone strike that killed a U.S. citizen overseas, he said.

"He should be executed for treason," Black said. "I think the appropriate punishment is death. They killed Benedict Arnold. (Obama) shouldn't be allowed to kill Americans without a trial."

Then there's the anti-constitutionalists who want to legislate their religious beliefs. In KY, state House rep. Joe Fischer (R-Ft. Thomas) wants to expand domestic violence laws to include abortion:
Rep. Joe Fischer of Ft. Thomas says he believes abortion is a form of domestic violence.

“The most brutal form of domestic violence is the violence against unborn children. And, this particular bill would prohibit abortions after the fetus feels pain, which is 20 weeks and older," Fischer says.

It’s a claim that most scientists find dubious...

Other members of the Christian Taliban are MO House reps. Rick Brattin and Andy Koenig who want to remove all teaching of evolution in schools:
Missouri Republicans have drafted a bill that would allow parents to pull their children from science classes that are teaching the theory of evolution. According to the National Center for Science Education (NCSE), Missouri’s House Bill 1472 would effectively “eviscerate” the teaching of biology in the state.

But then - that's how Republicans keep replenishing their numbers as the old ones die off - they ensure that children are denied a good education, and taught false science from their religious texts. They know that an educated empowered child will question their dogma, and find the dogma wanting. I've said it before, and will continue to repeat it until everyone is sick of hearing it - the politics that really matter, that really affect our lives occur at the state and local level. Ignore the sound and fury coming form the Capitol dome - look locally, pay attention, get involved, and VOTE.

Mornin' all.. Man it's a cold one out there today..

I hear there was a special election yesterday in Virginia, and that the good guys won!

:Grunt: I feel like a Smithfield ham this morning. The landlord had fire in the fireplace last night. However he didn't check the flue before hand. I arrived to house full of smoke and all the vent fans running. My rook was filled with smoke.

Yes, that's VERY good news. As reported on the Rachel Maddow show last night, all that remains is the result of a recount to determine whether Republicans or Democrats control the state Senate.

Morning, comrades. Safely at my desk - calling it an inch of snow in Worcester would be generous.

But then I was driving away from it - my friend on the South Shore (Weymouth) is reporting over 16 inches on the ground in his neighborhood. (About 60 miles from here, straight-line distance.)

Curious storm - most of it was downcape, which is unusual. Central Mass normally gets hammered.

Today's blog - this Commonwealth is no stranger to political scandals. We had three consecutive House Speakers head off to jail for various transgressions. And then Lt. Governor Tim Murray drank too much and drove his state car over 100 mph (and crashed it) one day last summer. He was "next in line" to be Governor, too.

Glenmn Beck's mea culpa? "I think I played a role, unfortunately, in helping tear the country apart."

Really.. a role? You played the fucking fiddle while the country burned, asshole. And you're still playing that fiddle and kicking logs into the fire on your radio show and silly net TV channel that no one watches.

I linked and quoted the story about the guy, not the exact link about the Secret Service visiting him. So - if you were looking just at the links without actually reading, you wouldn't have found it.

Only good thing about snow when it's in the single digits is that a couple of flicks of the brush gets 6" of it off the car. Was more worried that the car would start......rrrrr......rrrrrr.....rrrRRRrrrr......rrrRRRrrrrr................sputter sputter clatter

Now if they could have this weather during the Superb Owl......I'd be in heaven.

Good day, folks! I am just amazed that this is the second time we had a significant snowfall when normally temps are that low that you never get more than a flurry because it's too cold and dry to allow that much snow to fall.

And the forecast was fairly well blown for much of this area. As I said earlier maybe 6" at Chez Rabbit, maybe a couple of inches at the land of LEDs. I can look to the east and see the cloud bank that is still clobbering the South Shore. Mostly a SE MA, Cape of Cod and coastal storm.

WE actually got close to 7 inches. It was a nice light and fluffy snow.

I've curtailed my internet activity a bit. Much busier at work. And if I'm not in sight of Mrs. Rabbit at home (like if I go into the "computer room"), she starts to get a bit worked up.

There is still slow improvement for Mrs Rabbit, though I guess since I'm dealing with her all the time I don't see it since it's so incremental. I was rather surprised that she was able to find the restroom and then our table when we went out to dinner last week. I get just as surprised when she tells me she doesn't think we're home, that we live someplace else.

I'm told these type of strokes may take a year or more to get whatever recovery she's going to get. Her vision is definitely affected, especially anything on the left (it matters not which eye she sees it with) and according to the neurologist what she's seeing is nearly impossible for a normal person to comprehend. It has nothing to do with her cataracts, and it's hard to convince her of that.

Just finished her neuropsychology tests yesterday, we'll have the results in a couple of weeks, the neuropsych told me that she definitely sees improvement over the first time she was evaluated last month.

Hi, everyone.

BobR, I think that we are seeing a GOP that is not about traditional views that the party supported in the past but now seems to be about fundamentalist Christianity, limits on women and minorities, and supporting big business regardless. I fear that you are right in that they want children to be taught their dogma, but I believe that they are failing.

Everyone, please be careful out there.

Trojanrabbit, I am glad to hear that Mrs. Rabbit is getting better. I have kept her in my thoughts and prayers.

Something new for me to have an irrational fear of: coywolves.

Coywolves have the wolf characteristics of pack hunting and the coyote characteristic of lack of fear of human-developed areas. They seem to be bolder and more intelligent than regular coyotes.
