Opening up and coming out.

I know that Velveeta wrote a few blogs about gay players in the NFL a while back. She made a point to say that there ARE gay players in the NFL, it's just a matter of math.

Looks like it is happening. Michael Sam has publicly announced that he a gay. From DeadSpin, it does look like he is getting tremendous support. Like our Velveeta, Deion Sanders said it as well:
Michael Sam isn't the 1st gay player in the NFL although he is the 1st 2 come out.#realtalk Let's show him love like a family member. Truth

We've talked a lot about hypotheticals, the what if a player comes out, how will the league react, etc., now we get to see if people (the NFL) who talk the talk will walk the walk.
Sam is eligible for the NFL draft in May. Assuming that he is drafted, Sam could become the first openly gay player in the history of the NFL.

"I understand how big this is," he said. "It's a big deal. No one has done this before. And it's kind of a nervous process, but I know what I want to be ... I want to be a football player in the NFL."

In 2014, "Gay Man to Enter Workforce" has the everyday-occurrence sound of a headline in The Onion. But when the NFL is involved, it's a first -- and potentially a landmark moment -- in the history of American sports.

Sam's decision to speak out now -- in interviews with ESPN and the New York Times -- comes after his experience two weeks ago at the Senior Bowl, where, he said, many already seemed aware of his sexual orientation.
I wish this young man all the best.

and

Raine

Morning

Good morning!! I think that Michael Sam is benefiting from a society that has become more accepting of the LGBT community. Prejudices are lessening and it is to be hoped that Sam sees little signs of bigotry in professional sports. There will be some, I am afraid. However, the climate that this young man faces is far different from 10 years ago, let alone 20 or 30 years ago.

And you know, of course, we have the knuckdragger NFL people:

(of course, they are afraid to have their names printed, because you know, they aren't homophobic at all.

"I don't think football is ready for [an openly gay player] just yet," said an NFL player personnel assistant. "In the coming decade or two, it's going to be acceptable, but at this point in time it's still a man's-man game. To call somebody a [gay slur] is still so commonplace. It'd chemically imbalance an NFL locker room and meeting room."

All the NFL personnel members interviewed believed that Sam's announcement will cause him to drop in the draft. He was projected between the third and seventh rounds prior to the announcement. The question is: How far will he fall?

"I just know with this going on this is going to drop him down," said a veteran NFL scout. "There's no question about it. It's human nature. Do you want to be the team to quote-unquote 'break that barrier?'"

HEY ANONYMOUS DIPSHITS it's only commonplace because you could get away with it without people with BIGGER BALLS THAN YOU standing up and saying who they are and not being afraid of the consequences. If YOU AREN'T A CHICKENSHIT then come out in the open and say this kind of crap and use your [gay slur]s and see how fucking long you still have a job in that man's-man game.

First off - No, Mondo I haven't seen TWD yet, hopefully watching tonight but I kind of know what happened.

Seeing that the first black player in the NHL played for the Bruins, and the first black player and coach in the NBA were with the Celtics...and we still have to atone for the Red Sox being the last MLB team to integrate, I'd love to see Mr. Sam in a Patriot's Jersey.

Since I am buried in idiots who can't comprehend a simple online form, I hadn't even thought about TWD. These people are like the hominids in 2001 when they first see the obelisk.

TriSec, I was thinking that the Patriots might be a good fit for Sam. As for the haters, I have to give the Westboro Baptist Church more credit than the "anonymous sources" -- at least they are open about their views.

Good day, folks. Well, it's back to the grind tonight. Vacation wasn't too productive since the crappy snow and ice didn't allow me to do much. And now it will be fun coming home at 2:30 AM on a driveway still covered in ice.

I'm kind of happy with it, but I don't use it a lot. I like that I can run the phone app on my laptop and answer my office phone when I'm working from home.

Hey Raine - your the healthcare person here - I have a friend in TX who's son got sent home from the emergency room with scripts but they don't have insurance and can't afford to fill the scripts. Any ideas on where I can tell them to look for help?

It doesn't help that we are using a version of the software for the phone that Cisco doesn't support any longer.

Now this is getting interesting.
The panel may issue a new set of subpoenas after meeting today, and that could include a request for Christie's helicopter logs, the source said.

Meanwhile, the New York Post reported today that the committee is also seeking whether the Republican governor flew with then-Port Authority official David Wildstein, the former Christie ally who is credited with orchestrating the controversial closings.

It now turns out the a blogger is claiming he is the one who goofed on his transcripts for the site "Right Wing News;" making Walker claim that he voted for Reagan.
