Getting Ugly
Author: BobR    Date: 03/12/2014 11:20:46

I've posted more than one blog about Republicans and the amazing and stupid things they say. Unfortunately for them (and I suppose fortunately for us), they have to get re-elected. Their supporters and sycophants, however, are free to blather on with nary a care for consequence. The things they spout are stupid, mean-spirited, venal, galling, insane and deliberately deceptive. Let's have a look...

The one getting the most play and pushback is the anti-"Obamacare" ad for a Republican challenger to Gary Peters (D-MI). That's the one where the woman claims that she can no longer afford her health care. The truth is that she would actually save money:
Boonstra’s old plan cost $1,100 a month in premiums or $13,200 a year, she previously told The News. That didn’t include money she spent on co-pays, prescription drugs and other out-of-pocket expenses.

By contrast, the Blues’ plan premium costs $571 a month or $6,852 for the year. Since out-of-pocket costs are capped at $5,100 for in-network doctors and hospitals, including deductibles, the maximum Boonstra would pay this year for all of her cancer treatment is $11,952.

When advised of the details of her Blues’ plan, Boonstra said the idea that it would be cheaper “can’t be true.”

“I personally do not believe that,” Boonstra said.

Is she Ronald Reagan reincarnate? (who famously said - after being confronted with the evidence of the Iran Contra scandal - "A few months ago I told you I did not trade arms for hostages. In my heart I still think that is true but the facts say otherwise")

Televangelist Pat Robertson once again babbles incoherently:
“I was watching a horror movie the other day of the recommendation of others,” a viewer explained in a letter to The 700 Club. “It was rather strange and awfully macabre. And then this past Sunday, I got into an accident leaving church.”

“Did watching that movie cause a curse — or the Lord’s protection to be lifted from me?” the viewer wondered. “Did I grieve the Holy Spirit by watching this series?”

The TV preacher pointed out that he doubted demons had caused the car crash in this case, but it was possible.

Porn causes demons to wreck your car. That's definitely a new one.

Further out there in cloud cuckoo land (paranoid conspiracy division) is the nutjob at WND (yeah, I know) who claims that Russia will overtake the U.S. as a human rights leader. I can't even quote part of it, it's too sweeping in its absurdity. To summarize, though, humans have no right to sodomy, and embracing Christian values (which are apparently anti-homosexual) is the epitome of promoting human rights and the sign of a great society.

As always, though, FOX "News" continues to be the viper pit of political commentary. Stuart Varney is upset that states are feeding poor people despite cuts in food stamps:
Fox News host Stuart Varney is outraged that state governments are continuing to help the poor feed themselves, even after Congress agreed to cut spending on food stamps.
[...]
“This completely negates, almost entirely negates the cuts that Congress imposed,” Varney said Tuesday on “Fox & Friends.”
[...]
“You are told that you are taking food out of the mouths of children. You’re making people starve. You are bad because you’re cutting. You can’t win!..."

So apparently forcing people to starve is winning. Winning what exactly is certainly debatable.

Elisabeth Hasselbeck is upset about President Obama's comedy bit with Zach Galifianakis. Not because she thinks he shouldn't smile until BENGHAZI! is all settled (which in their minds will be... um... never). No, she thinks it's "inappropriate" for the President to be "advertising" a law (in this case - Obamacare). I can't even comprehend this.

And finally - we can't talk about the nadir of right-wing political discourse without bringing in the queen of crass - mAnn Coulter. She manages to offend rape victims everywhere when she compares Amnesty to rape:
Legal immigration has quadrupled in the last four decades, and it has not been natural but a Democratic plan to increase their vote share from a 1965 law, conservative commentator Ann Coulter said Saturday – offering one of her most bombastic characterizations.
[...]
"No this isn’t a natural process,” Coulter said. “It’s like you’re being raped and the guy is telling you ‘my penis is in you.’ No, you’re raping me. Demographics are changing by force. There is nothing natural about it.”

She says that like someone who's had a penis in her at one point or another. I highly doubt that. She's certainly never had one forced into her against her will. I wouldn't wish that on anyone, but when people use that word in such an offense manner, I tend to waver.

That's what happens when you pay too much attention to what these freaks say. The ugliness starts to rub off.

Good morning, bloggers!! I hope that everyone is well. (I was up at 5 AM to shovel and I am home. For one thing, no car yet. For another, my sister-in-law is having knee surgery. Please keep her in your thoughts.)

BobR, thanks for a great blog. I remember a friend years ago quoting a comic book writer who had a line that the Joker was where evil and insanity met. I believe that today's GOP may be where evil and stupidity meet. Coulter's comment recalls the worst of the nativist rhetoric of the past.

Neil DeGrasse Tyson recently stated that science is true, whether one believes it or not. The same applies to reality.

We also must avoid staring so deeply into the Abyss, to paraphrase Nietzsche, that the Abyss stares back at us. For Ann Coulter, I have a wish -- that she sees a world that rejects her hate, where people of all races, creeds, genders, sexual orientation and identities build a future that is worthy of the best aspirations of our ancestors and the dreams of our children. Coulter, Robertson, and Hasselback would be lucky to be remembered as small potholes in the road to a better future.

Bobber, the blog today is why I crowd sourced a collective noun for douchebags, the squeeze. I would have to say that the GOP is a big old squeeze of douchebags.

I;m more concerned with swing seats, and bagger seats.

I do not understand how 2 building can explode like this from a gas leak.

watching the live feed, it looks like we have fatalities.

Carmen... CBSLocal is interviewing her, and I want to say this now: She's a landlord and she knows ALL of her tenants -- she is heartbroken. She knows the story of her tenants (can assume who might have been home or who might not have) and has tried to call all of them.

No. HELL NO!! (Maybe we should have the executives who thought off this spend a month changing bed pans in a cancer ward at a hospital.)

Welp, we here in Georgia don't have anything to fear any longer; the Lege is protecting us with a giant Ten Commandments monument at the state capitol.

Also please note that the state senate had a vote to place a statue of MLK at the capitol as well. The vote was 49-1. I want to find out who that one is, but i bet that a) he's white, and he'll excuse it by saying that it would be a "waste of taxpayer dollars" or some such.

I was discussing this article with a friend of mine and how the title is really misleading because it's not really about Agent Orange. Yes, the widely-used herbicide that these crops are being GMO'd to resist is part of AO, but by itself it is not particularly problematic (unless it was manufactured poorly and is contaminated by one of the nastiest toxic compounds ever created!)

So I was off-base. A lot. That said I'm still not happy that GMO crops continue to proliferate.

Comment by Mondobubba on 03/12/2014 19:33:02
Agent Orange was made of two herbicide, 2,4-D and 2,5-T of the two, 2,5-T is by far and away the more toxic of the two. Which is why it was banned by the EPA in 1979.

2.4-T has 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin as part of the manufacturing process. That is why it is banned. 2,4-D is made differently, and doesn't contain dioxin.

Comment by Mondobubba on 03/12/2014 20:01:09
Yes, Mondo knows way, way too much about PCBs, dioxin, Agent Orange and organophosphates in general. Hell, Mondo has a little 3-ring binder that his father gave him for his D&D character sheets that was originally used to hold information about TSCA (the Toxic Substances Control Act) and RCRA (Resource Conservation and Recovery Act). Mondo's father was a charter employee of EPA.

Comment by Mondobubba on 03/12/2014 20:59:57
Mondo's tedious display of uber-nerdism killed the blog?
