Neon lights a Nobel Prize
A leader speaks, that leader dies
You don't have to follow me
Only you can set you free
- Cult of Personality, Living Colour

It was 40 years ago today in a restaurant kitchen beneath the Ambassador Hotel in LA that Robert F Kennedy's life was cut short by a bullet... or two... or more. He was seeking the Democratic nomination to run against Richard Nixon. His death and his brother's death 5 years earlier were bookends to the presidency of Lyndon Johnson.

It was also the third high-profile assassination (including MLK Jr 2 months earlier) of a popular leader of the people during that turbulent decade. Years later in 1981 there was the attempt on Ronald Reagan's life. It seems that popular leaders that challenge the status quo find themselves the targets of unstable loners with guns, acting alone.

Okay, maybe not so alone. Time to strap on your tinfoil hats...

Nearly 100 years ago during the first World War, a group of business leaders formed what was known as the Council on Foreign Relations. The goal was to destroy barriers to business between nations, so that business would be border-neutral. Since they are somewhat secretive, it's impossible to say how much influence they've haved on public policy and legislation. However, among its members have been numerous key figures in American politics, including Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, Alan Greenspan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, Warren Christopher, and Dick Cheney.

In the 70's David Rockefeller (of the Standard Oil Rockefeller fortune family) and Zbigniew Brzezinski created the Trilateral Commission, a kind of "off-shoot" of the CFR. It too has been secretive, although not so much as the CFR. It's members have included Jimmy Carter, George H. W. Bush, Paul Volcker, Alan Greenspan, Lloyd Bentsen, Warren Christopher, Bill Clinton, Dick Cheney, and John McCain. It's goals are the same as the CFR though, promoting business over borders, so it should be no surprise that Bill Clinton supported NAFTA.

There are other groups who's names get tossed around, like the Bilderberg Group (of which Clinton is also a member), the Masons, the Illuminati, etc., but that's a whole 'nuther can of beans. In some circles, they are thought to be promoting a "new world order" where there is one world government without borders, with them in charge, apparently.

We all know there's been huge speculation about whether the assassination of JFK was a conspiracy or a lone gunman. We may never know the truth, but Howard Hunt claims it was the CIA. Hunt worked for George H.W. Bush at the time. There's a video by Alex Jones here that pushes the theory that Bush was actually the one that arranged it. Bush was still in the CIA when RFK was shot, and once again there is some evidence that the CIA was involved. Of interest and possibly related, it was some years later that Ford appointed him as head of the CIA.

Quick quiz - Which was the only president that was NOT a member of the Trilateral Commission since it was formed?

The answer has already been given by listing the members...

The answer: Ronald Reagan

In fact, Ronald Reagan had a lot of nasty things to say about them. He thought that they wielded too much power for a non-government organization. Considering Rockefeller's close ties to the World Bank and the IMF, there's certainly some truth to that. After securing his party's nomination, he was strong-armed to take George H. W. Bush as his running mate, someone he did not want, but did so anyway to create a "dream ticket" for "party unity".

Only a few months later Reagan was shot by John Hinkely Jr., whose family - strangely - was good friends with the Bush family. :foil:

It's an interesting yet incomplete picture. Lot's of powerful men who've built large fortunes around oil and other commerce tweaking the strings of American politics and politically motivated assassinations targeting those that threaten the power of these groups.

At this point I should point out the McCain is a member of these groups, Senator Clinton's husband is a member of these groups. Barack Obama is not. In fact - his message and vision fly in the face of what these groups want. These groups do NOT want an empowered people.

Considering what happened to the Kennedys, considering Reagan's running mate and what happened to him, considering Clinton's assassination comment, it would behoove Obama to very carefully consider whom he chooses as his running mate. I would suggest it NOT be someone belonging to or supported by these groups...

Great post, and disturbing tin foil hat kinda stuff.

But to point out, that the other president that isn't listed is current President Bush. But if going with Tin Foil hattie-ness, Dick Cheney is the real president...so...

Just some Random Observations.

Yeah, I meant to mention that Cheney is the real controlling power in DC, but I forgot to put that in there. There's also the reality that Daddy Bush works behind the scenes to help out his son.

Mornin' BobR,

Nice post - thoughtful points. Just wanted to say Go Celtics! (from an old Bird/Parrish/McHale fan). Also wanted to let everybody on this blog know that this morning I resigned as the official radical militant librarian of the SMS - don't get me wrong, I am still a radical militant librarian, just have no affiliation with the SMS anymore - sad, but the time had come Getting blocked from the live blog was the final straw that broke this camel's back - got no response from Producer Chris yesterday and still wasn't able to post there this morning - so thanks, but no thanks. I'll still be posting here as long as you'll have me :peace:

Happy Friday everybody!

Cheers,

mfaye

Good morning, bloggers!!

I hope that all of you are doing well today.

BobR, an excellent post. I do not believe that a single group runs the world, but I also think that there are various people and organizations that are pursuing their own agenda. A good model might be a medieveal Renaissance court in Italy, with different factions of nobles scheming against each other and forming various alliances. This is actually more dangerous than what is espoused in many "tinfoil hat" theories, as a single sinister organization is easier to defeat. (Indeed, I think some may actually encourage the spread of conspiracy theories.)

The UNN Daily Headlines are up. Lots of important stories, including the one about how the Bush administration may have records on millions of people who might be targetted for imprisonment if martial law is declared. (Remember, John Adams had the Alien and Sedition Act, Eugene V. Debs and others were jailed during World War I for speaking out against the war, and we have other historic abuses.)

Good morning.

I hadn’t posted on here in a while because people were suffering from Clinton Derangement Syndrome.

Now that the endless primary is over my hope was that people were getting over that.

Adela had no intention of voting Democrat in November no matter what. Even if HRC had been the nominee. She would have found something wrong with her too and then say “oh I was going to vote for her but since she’s done (insert trivial bullshit here) I just can’t.”

The same goes for all these people that say they’ll vote for McBombBomb instead of Obama. They were never going to vote for a Democratic president.

Obama is my fourth choice (Feingold, Edwards, HRC) but I’m going to do whatever I can to make sure he’s our next president. It’s just too important not to.

Starting with doing voter registration at the Puerto Rican Day parade on Sunday. I’ll be at the start of the parade on 42nd St and 5th Ave with the big straw hat that has an Obama button on the brim.

I’ll shut up now.

Let us remember what unites Democrats and progressives is more important and more powerful than what divides us.

Also, let us consider McCain's policies and the likelihood that he could appoint three Supreme Court justices, possibly attack Iran, and ignore many problems in the economy. Disunity among Democrats only helps John McCain and his backers.

As the Beatles said, Come together! Right now!

Together we can build a more progressive America and world.

Yeah Raine,

We need a Kizzie report - how is she doing today - still cute as ever. I bet she is. BTB, one of my brilliant doggies (Dylan) who has to be tied up whenever I leave 'cause he jumps a six foot privacy fence got himself tanlged up in the pallet in front of the shed in my backyard. When I got home I had no idea how long he had been standing there with a befuddled look on his little face, but as soon as I unhooked him, he made a beeline for his water bowl. He is doing fine, BTW.

Buoyed by polls showing a quarter or more of Sen. Okay My Tech-Minded Geniuses! I need help.

I have to find a new printer. Know of any sites were they let me pick all the things I want it to do then tell what the best printer for me is?

I like Tiger Directfor computer type stuff.

I bought almost all the parts for my new computer from them.. they had a GREAT deal on the spanky new small-die Core 2 Duos and a gaming motherboard that I couldn't resist.

Only one minor problem.. the newer chipsets and Windows both seem to have severe problems with hi-def audio. I can't get mine to turn on without going into BIOS and doing a disable/reenable type shuffle thing.

Yes sir! They give really good rebates!

I bought my laptop from them and got $300 back...it's not their fault that the battery on the SONY VAIO sucks!

Simple questions. Question: do you believe that HRC managed her money well?

Answer: the money isn't the issue.

Come on, people. if yuo wanna have a conversation, be willing to talk about the whole kabash.

And, as I listen to the AP news break, when I hear McCain say he is running for president to keep the country he loves SAFE... I ask, how safe are we when we cannot afford our homes, our food, our heating, Our gas, our cars, ... basically how can we be SAFE with NO 'effing safety net? How can we be safe when the very policies that he is touting have made us unsafe and unsecure in our homes?

I don't feel safe knowing that the only thing they care about is protecting us from the bogeyman they tell us to be scared of and so many of the people I know and love (including myself) have been and are SCARED to lose their homes, scared about the electric being turned off, Scared about the prices of basic items to live in a BASIC way.

People are not safe, and it isn't because of the bogeyman, it is because of the policies that we have had foisted upon us for at least 8 years, I contend 12, thanks to the people who have made these actions lawful.

We're going to feel real safe when crime goes up because a lot of people don't have a pot to piss in. Ever notice how ChuckleNuts makes these statements about how the economy is on an upswing on days when the stock market tumbles and the price of oil rises? It's the all is well in the midst of a crisis bullshit. What an asshole.

one of my concerns is that when crime rises above the ability of the crimefighters to do their job, agencies will start to rely on privitixation (note: Blackwater) to fill in the gaps.

We MUST elect Barack Obama in the fall. We need someone to change the policies that are driving our country in a hole. It is critical. National Security means people being and feeling safe here, inside our Nation's borders, and it is a lot more than fighting bogeymen and crime.

Crime, the type that I know you are speaking of Izzy, is a symptom, not a cause of, an insecure nation.

Yeah, Thom Hartmann talked about RFK yesterday in detail, played one of his great speaches on American values....simply remarkable...how much better this country would have been....

Well....the economy is doing swell.....today, (friday gee...for the weekend news cycle, when everyone is paying attention...)it was announced:

"The nation’s unemployment rate jumped to 5.5 percent in May — the biggest monthly rise since 1986 — as nervous employers cut 49,000 jobs."

Here's my post...

Bad Economy: "I'd like to thank the Republicans and the evil driven stupidity of their voters for making me what I am today...thanks for the deregulation, thanks for the illegal war/occupation borrowed against the US treasury, the 9trillion dollar trade deficit courtesy of insanely stupid 'free market' trade policies outsourcing labor, manufacturing, and profits deferred by offshore bank accounts that are sweet little tax shelters, thanks for the added bankruptcy protections for corporations while scuttling all personal bankruptcy protections for the citizenry...thanks for the mortgage crisis brought to you by GOP senators whoring for multinational banks owned by SWFs (Sovereign Wealth Funds) and Oil rich countries using the death cycle of petrodollars to purchase all of our debt (hence owning our collateral), banks, wall street institutions, land, and resources...

I know I've left out about 9Trillion other things that the bizzaro world supply-side Reaganomics/Bushonomics/Flat Earth Horse$hit wealth transfer system has done to our country...

Dear right wingnut idiots....Maybe when your boss, your lord speaks Arabic or Mandarin to you....you'll finally get the hint (long after your GOP heroes have left you far behind and gone off to their palatial getaways in Paraguay, Dubai, and the Caribbean)

Sorry...how could I possibly forget the WTO, IMF, and the destruction of tariffs....without those 3 things none of what has happened today would be possible...

Ah, they got Lionel on here instead of Racheal (6-9 eastern is her show, if i remember correctly).

Lionel is an asshole.

I turn it on when i get in my car, and the first thing i hear from Lionel is: "We're going to talk about how the Democratic party can run a candidate, who if the election was held today, would lose?"

I almost wish i had one of those knobs that makes that loud click when you turned it off, just for comic effect.
