Sharia Law
Author: BobR    Date: 2015-02-18 11:49:41

Republicans and FOX "News" spend a lot of time trying to instill fear in those who listen to them. They bellow about socialism and terrorism and guns and taxes in an effort to make voters so fearful of Democrats that they'll vote against their own interests because they equate the Democrats with something worse. FDR once said "we have nothing to fear but fear itself", and that fear is what they peddle.

One fear they traffic in quite often is the absurd nation that somehow the U.S. will adopt Muslim Sharia law. They never quite explain how, or which laws, they just put throw that out there like a lit package of firecrackers and watch everyone run for cover. The irony, of course, is that religious law IS becoming a problem here in the U.S. - it just isn't the Muslim variety.

In Tennessee, state representative James VanHuss wants to designate the Bible as an official state book. What does that mean?
VanHuss wants to change the Tennessee Constitution so that it includes the phrase: “We recognize that our liberties do not come from governments, but from Almighty God, our Creator and Savior.”

Is that a little sharia-y? How about Oklahoma trying to cancel Advanced Placement history classes because of a "false wall of separation of church and state":
Oklahoma Rep. Dan Fisher ® has introduced “emergency” legislation “prohibiting the expenditure of funds on the Advanced Placement United States History course.” Fisher is part of a group called the “Black Robe Regiment” which argues “the church and God himself has been under assault, marginalized, and diminished by the progressives and secularists.” The group attacks the “false wall of separation of church and state.” The Black Robe Regiment claims that a “growing tide of special interest groups indoctrinating our youth at the exclusion of the Christian perspective.”

If you decide to click over to that "Black Robe Regiment" web site and take a look at their mission statement, this little scary bit jumps out and all over the U.S. Constitution:
[It is our mission] To restore the American Church in her capacity as the Body of Christ, ambassadors of Christ, moral teacher of America and the World, and overseer of of all principalities and governing officials (Rom 13), as was rightfully established long ago (under the leadership of Moses, the first appointed head of the Children of Israel and of God--see Exo 18:13-27).

Scared yet? How about the infamous Judge Roy Moore of Alabama who is trying to block gay marriage because it violates God's "organic law":
“This power over marriage, which came from God under our organic law, is not to be redefined by the United States Supreme Court or any federal court,” Justice Moore told “Fox News Sunday.”

Meanwhile, up in Montana, there's a bill promoting "intelligent design":
“Encourage Critical Thinking in the Classroom” is the title of HB 321. The preamble of this legislation says, “The scientific community has not resolved or answered the questions related to the origins of all life or the origin of our universe.” It would give public school teachers legal immunity if they want to teach “alternative” theories.

and of course - we all know what THAT means.

Along with these examples, there are the anti-abortion laws and gay marriage bans that are profligate everywhere. It's full-on Christian lawmaking.

So the next time some yahoo makes the dubious claim that sharia law is a danger to our country, ask "which religion?"

Good morning....I think. I think I'm falling apart.

Had a little late start as I had to stop at doctor's office for a blood test. As soon as I arrived at work my shoulders just froze up. Fuck winter.

Better, recovering for sure. Still sore from all the coughing, a bit worn out from all the droogs, and now I feel a little bit of a head cold coming on! But not nearly coughing as much, and when I do it's not longer a dry cough but instead I get the lovely thick brown stuff which means it's clearing out.

I've been to Sheppardstown, WV -it is a very hippy-ish town up in the mountains, about 30 minutes from Charles Town.

We drove through it really. Wanted to get out and walk around but we were too tired. Next time we're in that area, sometime over the summer I bet, I'll see if I can locate it. This is Sheppardstown, totally cute and there's a college nearby too.

I expect dispatches from WAY WAY outside Nova.

I leave the beltway on a regular basis and leave NOVA as well…

Advil didn't seem to help any. Turning my neck is painful. At this point it fuels itself since I'm consciously trying not to turn my head.

With the roads as they are, being able to turn your head isn't that big a thing, as the snowbanks are so high you can't see what's coming on the other road anyway, unless it's at night and you see headlights.

Today, my laptop took forever to start up. Feeling like another one of those days and we may finally get above freezing on Sunday.

Well, in this case it's way too late for Darwin.

Hi, everyone!!

I am home tonight after a staff meeting. We are looking at maybe -7 Fahrenheit tonight and a wind chill of -30. We may have wind chills of -20 to -30 in the morning. No word yet if my school will close
