I have no words.

I have anger and rage. I have sadness that we are a nation that will do nothing to stop the tide of mass gun shooting on our soil.

The San Bernardino shooting is the second mass shooting today and the 355th this year
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y59/raine1967/imrs.png

It would be also be the second mass shooting just today -- in the early morning hours, one person was killed and three were injured in an incident in Savannah, Georgia.

Speaking after the Colorado Springs shooting last week, President Obama urged Americans to not let this type of violence "become normal." But the data show that this type of incident already is normal. There have been more mass shootings than calendar days so far this year.

The number of mass shootings so far this year has already surpassed the total number of mass shootings in 2014, according to the Reddit tracker. And the pace is well above 2013's pace, when a total of 363 mass shootings occurred.

So what can be done?
It's worth pointing out that shootings like the one in San Bernardino are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the totality of gun violence in America. Over 33,000 people died at the end of a gun in 2013, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Roughly two-thirds of those were suicides. That leaves roughly 11,000 gun homicides each year.

Guns don't kill people of their own volition, obviously. But they sure do make it easier. And the sheer number of guns in circulation means that somebody who wants to get a gun to hurt a lot of people typically won't have a hard time doing so.

This is real illness.

If anything this reinforces the statistic, damned as statistics may be. It's not just people who die who are victims of gun violence, but people who are injured severely and are affected the rest of their lives, both mentally and physically. They shouldn't be discounted when the time comes to use the mass shooting label.

Society as a whole is hurt mentally (and financially) as well, tho we don't seem to be learning that lesson.

My issue with this as a metric is it gives the false impression that a San Bernadino or Sandy Hook level event is happening every day. They are not.

Good morning, friends!! Let us remember that we are not alone.

As for myself, I am sick of the deaths and the injuries. I have seen too many young people, particularly Hispanics and African-Americans, in electric wheelchairs I have seen too many stories of children shot and injured.

We need to act as a society to stop this. As for the statistics, I am reminded of what Mark Twain said: "There are lies, there are damned lies, and then there are statistics."

Our nation and our world has become a violent place. I suppose that Alpha Centauri is not accepting immigrants?

The Founding Fathers were not infallible. It is entirely possible that with the Second Amendment, they made a mistake.

No vessels of war shall be kept up in time of peace, by any state, except such number only, as shall be deemed necessary by the united states, in congress assembled, for the defence of such state, or its trade; nor shall any body of forces be kept up, by any state, in time of peace, except such number only as, in the judgment of the united states, in congress assembled, shall be deemed requisite to garrison the forts necessary for the defence of such state; but every state shall always keep up a well regulated and disciplined militia, sufficiently armed and accounted, and shall provide and constantly have ready for use, in public stores, a due number of field pieces and tents, and a proper quantity of arms, ammunition, and camp equipage.

- Article VI, Paragraph 4 of the Articles of Confederation.

They should have kept it the way it was when they scrapped the AoC for the Constitution.

The history of the Second Amendment is not as glorious as some proclaim. As you and my other New England friends know, one of the first uses of militias in the U.S. was to stop the Whiskey Rebellion.

Carl T. Bogus (real name), professor of law at Roger Williams University, has discussed the role of militias in preventing slave escapes and rebellions.

Most other democracies have much stronger limits on guns but I don't hear that the Britons, the Swiss or the Australians are not free. We need to take a hard look at ourselves.

The issue of slave rebellions is one of the biggest reasons for militias in the US. I've been doing a lot of reading of late about this issue. The tradition of the militia was stronger in the slaveholding states than other parts of the country.
