Compare and Contrast.

This is what Barack Obama wrote in the book at Yad-Vashem in Israel. This is the man who will be president of the United States. This is from the man John McCain called a flip-flopper yesterday. Yeah, These are the words written that the McCain campaign, chose to attack Barack Obama for.

The words, are striking, and moving, but the eloquence in his writing speaks volumes about the man we can elect as president. He may not be a perfect man, but he will be a man who can restore dignity and Pride to a nation that sorely needs it. To read the words, in the man's handwriting... it is a moving experience.

For a laugh, or a cry... compare to the extra surgie surger, John McCain:

The Surge is for John McCain what Sovereign was for the pResident.
Don't believe me? - Compare, contrast:

I will take Barack Obama ANY day.
:peace: and

Had a chuckle this morning...

Seeing that I border a swing state (NH), all the campaigns buy in the Boston market to cover Southern NH.

Anyway, I was watching NECN this morning, and they did a brief story about how oil had fallen by $25/bbl over the past 8 days worth of trading.

Followed immediately by the McCain "Blame Obama" ad about the gas prices.

Nice timing. (wonder if they knew the ad was up next.....)

Anyway, I'm still struck by McCain's "Don't Hope" message. Yeah, that'll work. I'll just sit here in the corner eating worms and voting Republican.

The U.S. Embassy in Berlin has instructed Foreign Service personnel stationed there not to attend Sen. Barack Obama's public rally today, which the State Department this week labeled a "partisan political activity" prohibited under its regulations for those serving overseas.

Government employees serving in the United States are permitted to attend such events under the Hatch Act, which bars other partisan activity, such as contributing money or working in behalf of a candidate.

Obama tried to tamp down expectations on his press plane today. He told reporters,

"I doubt we're gonna have a million screaming Germans," Obama said.

Half a million? asked another reporter.

"Let's tamp down expectations here," Obama said. "If we get a few tens of thousands..."

Obama said he "did not realize - my staff basically just told me that this space is bigger than I realized. So."

Asked a reporter: Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

"Uh, it's a potentially bad thing if nobody shows up," Obama said, laughing. "You know, we're sort of on the high wire all of the sudden. It's like, 'I'm sorry, how many people does this accommodate? How many?'...We really have no idea what's going to happen. Sort of a crap shoot. I'm happy with the speech though."

Funny you should ask that, Random... just yesterday I was thinking that we should creat a separate links box for all the local state elections that our blog members are interested in.

You know, for myself, we have John Lewis --

and right now a runoff between Vernon Jones and Jim Martin in the Dem primary to go up against Saxby Chambliss.

(Vernon, btw voted for George Bush --TWICE)

So I love what you are thinking, and I will take input if adding a new links section for candidates we support is prudent. There are many people , so posting ads, like we did during the primaries, would be a bit much I think...

Links to the campaign websites for who people are supporting? Yes? No?

I do have an idea about some number crunching after the election. Something I have wanted but have not yet found.

It would be interesting to have the cooresponding population that each politician acutally represents then tally the population by vote. Congresscritters are pretty easy but senators could split a state if they are from different parties. Then look at the real representation of population by each vote.

I have a feeling the numbers could be interesting - like universal healthcare being held up by a sliver of the population type thing.

It could also show how much of the population is represented by each party, caucus, etc. - I wonder how much of the real crazy stuff is being driven by a miniscule minority of the population.

There might be a site that already does this, I have not found it yet.

HE did, in a five way race... but here in Georgia... if a candidate doesn't get more that 50% of the vote, a runnoff election happens between the #1 and #2 candidates.

the other 3 people have all endorsed Jim Martin for the runnoff. Vernon Jones got a large republican crossover vote.

So Jim Martin actually has a good chance of winning the runnoff if we can get the voters oput for the runoff vote. Hope I explained that ok.

If it can be done - it will be for after January - plenty of time to kick around the idea.

And even then only if it is fun, it is no good if it's not fun.

IOC bans Iraq team from Olympics

BAGHDAD, Iraq—The International Olympic Committee has upheld a ban on Iraqi teams at the Beijing Games, saying Thursday the government missed the deadline to address accusations of political interference.

The IOC decision culminates a drawn-out internal feud in Iraq that many see as an extension of Shiite payback to Sunnis who once held a cozy niche in Saddam Hussein's regime.

In May, the government dissolved the National Olympic Committee. Among the claims was it was illegitimate because it lacked a legal quorum -- but four members of the committee, including its chief, were kidnapped two years ago and their fates are unknown.

There's also a potential sectarian rift. Iraq's Youth and Sports Ministry is dominated by Shiites, while the NOC includes several holdovers from the Saddam-era Olympic Committee, run by his feared eldest son, Odai.

The International Olympics Committee denounced the order as "serious interference" in what is supposed to be an independent body and demanded the government respect the NOC's autonomy.

"Clearly we'd very much like to have seen Iraq's athletes in Beijing," IOC spokeswoman Giselle Davies said Thursday. "We are very disappointed that the athletes have been so ill-served by their own government's actions."

John McCain is obviously not an expert on foreign affairs. He is incapable of remembering and repeating even the most elementary aspects of any foreign policy; the names of the leaders or the parties involved, or the geography and history of the regions in question.

The main tent poles of the McCain Campaign are infested with with the termites of truth and are crumbling fast. If you think he is a Viet Nam hero you are under informed. "McSame's MIA Bomb" is a collection of videos that cover the truth about his capture and captivity in Viet Nam as well as his disservice to POW/MIA and veterans issues. The videos include testimonials by Dr. Joseph Douglas Jr., Tracy Usry former Chief Investigator US Senate, Senator Bob Smith (R-NH), Representative Bob Dornan (R-CA), Al Santoli American Foreign Policy Council, Former Congressional Chief of Staff, Corporal Bob Dumas US Army (Ret), Dr. James Lucier former US Senate Chief of Staff, and Lt. Col. Earl Hopper Special Forces Intelligence (Ret.).

This might just be the first global election.

Seeing the reaction of much of the Middle East and Europe to a potential President Obama clearly illustrates how important we can still be for the rest of the world.

With this election, it's really not about us or even these United States. Given our complete disengagement over the last 8 years, the rest of the world is poised to declare the USA irrelevant and move forward without us.

President McCain means they will do that, and we'll increasingly become isolated and perhaps even more of a pariah state than we already are.

This is the first broadband presidency - there is a global flavor taking over everything.

Not a NWO thing a realization that as we become more and better connected we learn we are the same in different ways or different in the same ways. We all love our country, our families, our friends. McCain takes swipe at Obama for Berlin speech

COLUMBUS, Ohio (Reuters) - Republican John McCain said on Thursday he would like to give a speech in Germany as U.S. president not as a White House candidate, taking a swipe at rival Barack Obama while the Democrat gave a major address in Berlin.

"I'd love to give a speech in Germany ... a political speech or a speech that maybe the German people would be interested in, but I'd much prefer to do it as president of the United States rather than as a candidate...for the office of presidency," McCain told reporters in Ohio.

Standing in front of a store in a neighborhood known as German Village, McCain -- for whom foreign policy is considered a strength -- said he would focus on issues at home while his opponent traveled abroad.

Go for it gramps! How small and petty - he should have complimented Barack and tried (for once) to take the high road. . .

In McCain's defense, if he had to pick a Sausagehaus to do another green-screen counter to Obamania runnin' wild, Schmidt's is not a bad choice. I was there a few years ago, and they do make some tasty German cuisine.

back from lunch. Sad I missed pretty much the entire speech. I was flipping around the radio trying to find someone airing it, and - lo and behold - it was playing on the Rush Limbaugh show :grumble:

Which means I had to listen to it interspersed with Limpball's whiny asides and comments. During Obama's setup (talking about the past history of Berlin), Limpball raged about Obama giving us a "history lesson".

It made me wonder how he would've covered the Gettysburg Address...

AL: "Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal..."

RL: "Enough with the history lesson already!..."

I sent the following letter to the AJC. I just got a call from the Editorial dept. to confirm I indeed wrote it, and they said they're going to print it, probably on Monday...

=======================

All of the recent calls for offshore drilling as a solution to gas prices are failing to take into account the raison d'être of oil companies. It is not to sell oil, it is to make as much profit as possible. Considering that Exxon made record profits last year without drilling for more oil, one has to wonder why they would be motivated to drill more. More oil would drive the prices down, which means they would make less money per barrel, all the while absorbing the additional costs of producing more oil.

Oil companies already have drilling leases for oil-rich land that they are not using, and there are thousands of acres in Alaska's NPR that have yet to be leased. There is no shortage of available oil fields. The fact that the oil companies are not using them seems to reinforce the notion that producing oil is not their primary focus.

The only two solutions for driving down oil prices would be to force oil companies to drill more, or to regulate the price and/or profit per barrel (which would in effect motivate them to drill more). Both ideas are anathema to "small-government" Republicans, who would rather use the talking point of "off-shore drilling" as a political football than focus on a workable solution.

The issue at hand isn't opening more areas for drilling, it's getting the oil companies to drill in the areas already open. This will never happen until there is a financial motivation to do so.

Will we acknowledge that there is no more powerful example than the one each of our nations projects to the world? Will we reject torture and stand for the rule of law? Will we welcome immigrants from different lands, and shun discrimination against those who don't look like us or worship like we do, and keep the promise of equality and opportunity for all of our people?

Going all Av-Dorky for just a second...

I saw in the photos from Germany that Sen. Obama's campaign plane is apparently a 757 (couldn't tell what variant.) That's a high-efficiency twin with transatlantic range...

I've also seen in print this week that Sen. McCain's plane is an ordinary old 737.

Who's thinking bigtime here?

Hmm, strike that.

Obama has chartered from an outfit called "North American Aviation"....and he is indeed flying a US-built Boeing 757.

Sen. McCain, on the other hand, apparently has chartered from JetBlue. And they fly European-built A320s. (as Livin will tell you)

I find that interesting, given Senator McCain's stand on the air force tanker contract.

back from lunch.

What an asshole.

I didn't catch the speech, but I did get a snippet of the DAGB* griping about it, and I believe I got what will be the theme of Right-Wing World for the next day or so. Basically, he said that the Obama camp had gotten a couple of German music acts to open for him, thus implying that Barack wouldn't have drawn that big a crowd without "the rock music" to help him. Kinda like how the big Portland OR rally was actually a Decembrists concert with Barack tacked onto the end as an afterthought.

Going to Latin America in the midst of a presidential campaign, he said, speaks less to his role as a senator than to what he's hoping to achieve if elected this fall. "It's more my ability to govern as president," he said, "my ability to lead as president, to keep up with these major issues."

"If combat means living in a ditch, females have biological problems staying in a ditch for thirty days because they get infections and they don't have upper body strength. I mean, some do, but they're relatively rare. On the other hand, men are basically little piglets, you drop them in the ditch, they roll around in it, doesn't matter, you know. These things are very real. On the other hand, if combat means being on an Aegis-class cruiser managing the computer controls for twelve ships and their rockets, a female may be again dramatically better than a male who gets very, very frustrated sitting in a chair all the time because males are biologically driven to go out and hunt giraffes."
