Then and Now... a dishonor to self and country.
Author: Raine    Date: 08/04/2008 12:28:03

Let's Start with some happy thoughts for Barack Obama. Today is his 47th Birthday! To contrast, at the end of the month, it will be John McCain's 72nd.

The Olympics start Friday. I contend that this week Barack Obama will pick his running mate. The Olympics end a day before the DNC, and I think that he will want this choice put out there before Bejing, as the already cancelled news will be even more cancelled for this debacle called sports. I have decided to stop speculating about this, as the other pundits and the bloggers have been crazy about it. Well, anyway -- on to the Monday Blog...

The American people deserve to be treated with respect by those who seek to lead the nation. And I promise you, you will have my respect until my last day on earth. The greatest blessing of my life was to have been born an American, and I will never dishonor the nation I love by letting myself -- I will never dishonor the nation I love or myself by letting ambition overcome principle. Never. Never. Never.

My friends, I say to you I am a uniter, not a divider. I don't just say it, I live it. I'm a real reformer. I'm a real reformer. I don't just say it, I live it. And I'm a fighter for this country, and I don't just say it, I live it.
John McCain, February 19, 2000

Compare and Contrast, From John McCain's appearance on Hardball™, Just a few months ago (it's less than a minute) :
Transcript here.
Interesting the things that can change a man. He is no more a maverick than the most petulant of liars. He is a man that will play dirty, and will do anything to win. He is using the most famous of all the rovian tactics... find your opponents strength and attack it.

What he has done is shown himself not to be a maverick, but a bitter nasty old man that will do whatever he can to get what he wants. I have never seen a person discard personal character and honor so quickly for personal gain. In other words... according to the John McCain of 2000 --
He has dishonored this nation he loves, and himself by letting ambition overcome principle.

:peace: and

John McCain, circa 2000, became only the second Republican in my life that I have voted for. (The other being William Weld, former governor of this Commonwealth.)

Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Bush, Cheney, Rove, et al, are living proof.

Good Morning!

Great post and really it is very sad to see McCain and what he has become.

McCain has lost it - (wow am I redundant and ineloquent!)

Thanks!

Capt, you're missing the point. I'm way too egotistical to be happy knowing how insignificant I am.

I never said "happy" just amazing. . .

Neener neener, you can always be amazed! Happy is just a mindset that people impose on themselves. Happy and sad are two states of the same being - why would one state be better than the other?

Just sayin'

I hate to say this (I might get things thrown at me :ducks:) -- Fred Barnes is not completely wrong.

I don't think that the Dems are wrong and the Repubs are right on the drilling issue - but the Republicans are very good at making a message very simple (i.e. ignoring all nuance for the sake of political gain).

They say - gas prices are too high. People agree.

They say if there was more oil, gas prices would be lower. Not true, but easy for the uninformed to accept.

Therefore, increased drilling means your gas prices will go down. Also not true, but easy for the uninformed to accept.

Thus, 60%+ of Americans side with the Republicans on more drilling.

A purely political move - and the Dems are now reacting. Pelosi on This Week did a horrible job of explaining the nuance. Obama said that compromise might include concessions (doesn't "compromise" include them by definition?)

Republicans own this issue. I don't know that there is a way out of it for Dems, politically - as sound-bites rule - not long, enlightened explanations.

Shane-O I tend to agree - we need someone who's good at PR or with an advertising background who can come up with catchy slug lines to get our point across.

Am I just too revisionist-idealistic? Was there ever a time when the people running this country actually CARED about this country, instead of caring about what lies they could make the electorate believe, so as to increase their own power?

Comment by TriSec on 08/04/2008 13:31:30
I don't know about anyone else, but I'd prefer not to destroy the environment and pollute our coastlines for my son just so we can pay 5 cents a gallon less for gas in seven years.

I am holding that in reserve for the wingnuts-in-law, but they also believe McCain and the war, and the hundred-years comment fell on deaf ears, despite the prospect of their only grandchild being drafted and getting shot at when he turns 18.

This is what we're up against.

Shane-O,

I must agree with you - if the Dems lose this election it will be because of nuance - something most people either don't get or simply don't pay any attention to, mostly because it complicates their simplistic view of the world and goodness knows most people like their messages simple and stupid - "USA USA USA" BTB, Obama's messages are nothing if nor nuanced (read intelligent :P) Just mho...

Maybe Barack is thinking he would encourage drilling in the existing 66 million acres of leases held by oil companies?

Note - Barack is talking about drilling not "more leases"

The two issues have been conflagrated by the republicans and the oil companies but the two things are nearly juxaposed at this point.

Barack is pretty smart - I think he gets it.

Not to mention Barack is safe on the subject because it will take congress and the senate to pass on more drilling or leases so he can say anything and let the house and senate nix the whole thing in "opposition" to Barack.

Altogether a tempest in a teapot.

Anncr VO: Every time you fill your tank, the oil companies fill their pockets.

Now Big Oil’s filling John McCain’s campaign with 2 million dollars in contributions.

Because instead of taxing their windfall profits to help drivers, McCain wants to give them another 4 billion in tax breaks.

After one president in the pocket of big oil... We can’t afford another.

Barack Obama... A windfall profits tax on big oil to give families a thousand dollar rebate.

Roads, planes, and trucks get all the$$, while Amtrak has to fight for the crumbs.

Hell, maybe that's an argument for privatization right there. Passenger Rail is a Federal racket, if it was private, they'd hire lobbyists and become a special interest, then the money would start flowing!

Hey - for anyone in the PA area! We made a trip to Grantville this weekend to go to Penn National and the Hollywood Casino. It's the weirdest thing I've seen in a while - a casino (slots, video black jack and poker only) and horse track right behind a corn field.

Anyway, we travelled most of the way on RT15. THere is a little place around the Taneytown Road exit in Getteysburg that sells fruits and veggies from a collective of 27 small farms in the area. I had the best peach I think I have ever had in my life! The place is run by a potter and his wife from an old house. They also sell their pots, handmade soaps (I bought honeysuckle & rose, chocolate mint, one other one) and jams & jellies (I got the chocolate raspberry it was so yummy!)

If your driving around that area I highly recommend stopping in!

They also have a website but they don't everything threw it

Mum is 'closeted', she won't say anything openly racist, but it's easy enough to read between the lines.

Yet another reason for Obama, not only must we repudiate the Republicans in general, we also need a generational shift in our leadership.

Jimmy Carter was probably the last President who felt like he was using the office for the greater good rather than fueling his own personal ambition or serving the interests of the campaign contributors unlike the last 3 GOP Presidents.

McCain campaign gets even more childish

McCain's backers will reportedly be outside Obama's speech [in Boston] with tire pressure guages -- gigging him for calling last week for people to take responsibility themselves for energy conservation by keeping their car tires properly inflated.

“There are things that you can do individually though to save energy; making sure your tires are properly inflated, simple thing, but we could save all the oil that they’re talking about getting off drilling, if everybody was just inflating their tires and getting regular tune-ups. You could actually save just as much," he told voters in Missouri.

The Republican National Committee announced it's also giving tire gauges to newsrooms in Washington "in celebration of Barack Obama’s special day" with a press release headlined, "Happy Birthday, Barack Obama."

McCain's campaign also offered "Obama Energy Plan" tire gauges to supporters for a donation of $25 or more.

No way! That would be the most awesome thing ever. Better be careful...you will have all the blog 'puters showing up at your door!

I have already tried a system restore and opening to "Last known working configuration." Neither worked. Also, when you start it up the "Windows theme" is all warbly.

(If you are into baseball you should love this guy)

My real name is Nate Silver and my principal occupation has been as a writer, analyst and partner at a sports media company called Baseball Prospectus. What we do over there and what I'm doing over here are really quite similar. Both baseball and politics are data-driven industries. But a lot of the time, that data might be used badly. In baseball, that may mean looking at a statistic like batting average when things like on-base percentage and slugging percentage are far more correlated with winning ballgames. In politics, that might mean cherry-picking a certain polling result or weaving together a narrative that isn't supported by the demographic evidence.

So if you catch me overusing baseball metaphors in my political writing or political metaphors in my baseball writing -- this is my excuse.

He has been very accurate and he has Obama over 303 EV's.

Why Obama is losing the pundit race ... and winning the election.

But as for the election....

A week ago, Barack Obama was a 3:2 favorite to win the election.

Today, Barack Obama is a 2:1 favorite to win the election.

A week ago, Barack Obama was likely to win 273 electoral votes (EVs).

Today, Barack Obama is likely to win 303 EVs.

Those statistical predictions are far more important than how many pundits wrote or said what because every election is, by nature, a statistical event. Specifically, an election is a statistical estimate of the vox populi - the voice of the people. It's only an estimate, because not all of the people vote. But it's an estimate based on the set of people who are legally eligible and are motivated enough to go cast a vote.

"But Crissie," you say, "the polls show this is a dead heat!"

No they don't, because national opinion polls don't estimate the same process. We don't use a national popular vote, which is what national opinion polls estimate. A presidential election is a simultaneous series of fifty state elections. National opinion polls are as meaningless as the nationwide popular vote on election day, and the total of runs scored by each team in the baseball World Series. That's not how either event is scored.

Not the time to invest in any worries.

Mark my words - the M$M and the polls will not stay - they will go up and down. WAY down it that is what the M$M needs for ratings.

Comparison of oil in ANWR and NPRA

This is key:

As Table 2 shows, the technically recoverable resources available in NPRA and ANWR are similar in quantity. "The similarities between these estimates may be misleading, however, because of differences in accumulation sizes (the ANWR study are is estimated to contain more acculumations in larger size classes) and differences in assessment area (the NPRA study area is more than 12 times larger than the ANWR study area)." At market prices of less than $35 per barrel, the larger accumulations and proximity to existing infrastructure make the resources within ANWR more economically recoverable than those in NPRA. But these differences are moot when the market prices goes above $35 per barrel.

I hate that leaders have to play to the lowest common denominator - but it's a fact of political life. Republicans are great at it - mostly because they are such simple thinkers.

What if Obama were to go out - and in response to McCain's "plea" today to "drill here, drill now" (a la Newt Gingrich) said - "Yes. Drill here. And drill now." -- and with a few maps of the U.S. with the current oil leases (mostly enlarged) blocked out (the millions and millions of acres blotched out in red, or black) - Obama says - again - pointing - "drill here - drill now." Stick it straight up their red herring asses.

I tell you, the other morning the AJC had on it's front page a picture of the offshore drilling rigs out off of Huntington California... the headline read " OFFSHORE DRILLING MAY COME TO GEORGIA"

Scared the piss out of me. I only wish the rest of the repukes would have been as unnerved. The picture was just heartbreaking. I think the editors wanted that effect, but down here everyone is willing to just throw away the beauty of america as tho it were something that is ours to destroy for our own selfish good.

It isn't to me... America is the land that is your land and my land... Why can't we acknowledge that Nature is just as much a part of the tapestry that is the United states as is cars and the need to fuel them?

I've been having a bad day today (and the last few days, actually), and I'm only half caught up on the day's blogging, but someone was talking about VP candidates.

I think Obama's #1 criteria (after vetting, of course, can't have someone that takes him down or gives the McCain camp weapons) needs to be "pit bull". It's why I originally liked Jim Webb for the position, although I have come to understand that he doesn't want it and might have some negatives that go with the positives.

But Obama needs someone who can go out there and get down and dirty while leaving him to remain "above the fray". It's why Edwards (whom I liked a lot originally) would be a terrible choice. Two soft spoken hopeful guys? They'd be crucified.

Hillary would be a bad choice as well, not because she can't be a pit bull, but because she's already got a lot of people who dislike her and see her not as "scrappy" but as "bitchy". Not fair, not right, but true.

Obama needs someone intelligent but scrappy, and without bringing too many negatives on board.

My guess is that he'll pick a relative unknown (one of the names you hear and go "Huh! I wonder who that is!") rather than risk a Biden, who would be a great choice but who can't help but be seen as part of the established Washington power base that Obama so needs to not be seen as a part of.

He might do well with a Dodd, who has operated under the radar for most of his Senate career, but I'm not sure Dodd is scrappy enough. And somehow, Richardson is underwhelming in the same way Obama was to me at first. He's got all this great experience, and yet he seems like a Forest Gump character, having been lucky enough to be PRESENT at a lot of history, but having survived the experience through luck as much as through skill.

I'm glad to see this happen, although I'm sad to see Dana Milbank make this error. But I'm glad to see that when someone on this side makes such an error and compounds it by refusing to admit the error or correct it, that we don't just let it slide because he's "one of us".

Forgiveness is a good thing, but it first requires contrition, and I don't believe we've seen any of that. As long as Milbank refuses to admit that there could be any difference between the way he reported it and the actual fact, he needs to be held accountable.
