It's Thursday... what stunt will we see today?
Author: Raine    Date: 08/07/2008 12:25:46

Just in the past week, John McCain brought us Paris, Moses, bikers and tire gauges. This has been the level of discussion John McCain has brought to the discussion regarding who we as Americans should choose for the next President.

It's rather insulting, I think, to all the good people out there who really care about this country. We have millions of houses that have been foreclosed on or will be. People can't pay for health care, they are struggling to heat and cool their homes, and John McCain is talking about tire pressure. Granted... yesterday... he did finally agree that yeah, it does make sense. The reality is this -- the money one would save per gallon of gas is more than we would see if we were to drill offshore. The time saved by never having this stupid tire debate can never be gotten back. More money wasted...

So today, I sit here and I wonder what John McCain Fresh outrage of the day will be. It has to be something - the man is incapable it seems of talking about his own plans for becoming the leader of this country. How about *Surging the Economy*?
"Our surge has succeeded in Iraq militarily. Now we need an economic surge to keep jobs here at home and create new ones," the Republican said at a kitchen cabinet factory in the distressed state of Ohio.
Keep in mind, John McCain has also suggested that we use the National Guard to do crime prevention in inner cites... Put this all together and you really have one mess of a candidate.

America deserves better than this. It doesn't matter WHICH side of the aisle you are on. We deserve an intelligent debate about the issues of the day and issues that we will be facing in the next four years, not some pandering drivel that makes no sense from one day to the next, that the media spends hours dissecting for their own self serving interest. There are things that REALLY matter to Americans, things like comprehensive energy reform, health care, financial security for the middle class, education... the list goes on. McCain owes it to Americans to debate these issues. Not talk about Paris Hilton and pressure gauges.

So, it's Thursday... I wonder what will Surge out of McCains mouth.
Start threading the news.

:peace: and
Raine

Good morning Raine, wickedpam.

The ONLY good thing about sending the National Guard troops to the inner cities is that it gets them out of Iraq and back home where they belong. Other than that....

This country gets the leadership it deserves.....Amurikan Idul is more important than the cost of fuel or whether there will be any jobs around after they're all outsourced, unless everyone is going to be flipping burgers.

Paul,

I completely agree. There are times when I view our society as only slightly less pathetic than in various post-apocalyptic dystopian movies and TV shows in which the human race is reduced to only caring about that which directly affects them, which is largely their own entertainment and the reception on their television.

The British seem to be really fond of this particular plot line, we've seen it occasionally crop up on Doctor Who and Max Headroom and numerous other places.

We really are heading towards being the human race of Wall-E (a reference I'm hesitant to make because I've only read about it, I have not seen the movie).

Comment by TriSec on 08/07/2008 13:49:48
Once a year we celebrate

With stupid hats and plastic plates

The fact that you were able to make

Another trip around the sun

And the whole clan gathers round

And gifts and laughter do abound

And we let out a joyful sound

And sing that stupid song

Happy birthday!

Now you're one year older!

Happy birthday!

Your life still isn't over!

Happy birthday!

You did not accomplish much

But you didn't die this year

I guess that's good enough

So let's drink to your fading health

And hope you don't remind yourself

The chance of finding fame and wealth

Decrease with every year

Does it feel like you're doing laps

And eating food and taking naps

And hoping that someday perhaps

Your life will hold some cheer

Happy birthday!

What have you done that matters?

Happy birthday!

You're starting to get fatter

Happy birthday!

It's downhill from now on

Try not to remind yourself

Your best years are all gone

If cryogenics were all free

Then you could live like Walt Disney

And live for all eternity

Inside a block of ice

But instead your time is set

This is the only life you get

And though it hasn't ended yet

Sometimes you wish it might

Happy birthday!

You wish you had more money

Happy birthday!

Your life's so sad it's funny

Happy birthday!

How much more can you take?

But your friends are hungry

So just cut the stupid cake

Happy birthday!

Happy birthday!

Happy birthday, dear...

Morning BobR

One bad thing about testing defibrillators, when there's nothing hooked up to them they assume the patient is dead and they make an awful racket. The Fortress is reverberating with alarms. My ears

Actually testing a puck like device that you put on a patient when you're applying CPR and it tells you if you're pressing hard and fast enough. Yikes, I didn't think you had to press that hard, my arthritic wrist is screaming at me for just pressing down a few times.

Quote by Raine:

My fave part:

Breaking New Ground

BARACK OBAMA: Michelle had a conversation with Malia during the campaign, when Senator Clinton and I were still in the midst of the primary. You said, "You know, this is a pretty big deal. If Daddy wins, he'd be the first African-American to be a nominee."

MICHELLE OBAMA: I said, "Do you realize how important that is, how significant?" Malia says, "Oh, yeah. Because there was slavery, and there were people who couldn't do things because of their race." And she said, "But, it would also be a big deal if a woman had won. Because there was also the time when women couldn't vote. So it would have been a big deal either way." This is her talking.

BARACK OBAMA: But it was the past, it was historical. She wasn't feeling as if somehow this was a victory for her, because she feels like she's already won that one. So this generation is going to have different experiences. But family itself -- that, hopefully, is a constant. The joys, how they connect with you. Having that support. That's the American story of each successive generation working hard, passing on a better life to the next one. And part of the challenges of this election is making sure that that story continues for everybody. The government can't solve every problem, but an enlightened government can make sure that people can work hard for their dreams and achieve them. Government can knock down barriers so that families are in a stronger position. And that's what we're going to be fighting for in this election.

That is what America looks like!

I think that there is no better example of the ramifications (I love that word - so butch!) of our disastrous foreign and domestic policies under the Bush/Cheney administration than the realization that we don't have a leg to stand on when it comes to criticizing other countries' human rights records. I'm here Raine. Just very sporadically while working. It took 2 1/2 hours to set this darned defibrillator test up. The test itself will probably run 30 minutes.

And I just realized that in the Fortress of Solitude I can actually listen to things. So since I haven't heard all of yesterday's SMS yet (I go to sleep with Mama and she puts me to sleep) it's playing now.

Now it's time to nuke my soup.

Do you work for UL or something?

I worked for them for a couple months straight out of college, testing wire and light fixtures, and more bizarre things. It was a strange job.

"Or something" probably fits. I work for a medical device manufacturer. We do all of the relevant regulatory safety and EMC tests ourselves. Here we primarily manufacture patient monitors (bedside and patient-worn) and defibrillators. I'm on the EMC end, which deals with radio-frequency interference, static discharge and power line disturbances. The test I'm doing today measures how much interference a device puts on the power line (ever try to use an AM radio near a CF lamp?).

Where is Rush?

- Fifty-six government employees -- including a police officer, a felony court clerk, two corrections officers and 27 school bus drivers and attendants -- were arrested in a scam that used health insurance information to fraudulently obtain prescriptions for the painkiller OxyContin, authorities said Wednesday.

Sixty-two people were arrested in total and all face charges including racketeering, conspiracy to commit racketeering and grand theft, according to the Miami-Dade state attorney's office.

Authorities estimate 130 medically unnecessary prescriptions for OxyContin -- more than 12,000 tablets -- were presented to pharmacies. The drugs have an estimated street value of $400,000, prosecutors said.

OxyContin is a popular painkiller, delivering an instant "high" when it is crushed or dissolved and ingested.

The scam began in January 2003, when six "recruiters" enlisted a group of people, most of them employees of local government, to participate in the ring, according to prosecutors.

Those employees provided their health insurance identification information, and with that information they obtained unnecessary prescriptions for OxyContin from another codefendant, who was a physician, authorities said.

For them what cares, I'll probably not be around much next week, going to NC to visit my parents. They live in Brevard, not terribly far from the Blue Ridge.

NW Airlines out of Manchester, connecting through Detroit into Asheville.

I'm back and the doctor says it's pneumonia. I have to stay home tomorrow. Also, I have a student in one of my classes that I am about to toss out for his behavior. I'm a little bit miserable, actually. Think I'll crawl into bed and watch "Return of the Jedi".

On the way to work I saw something that kind of creeped me out. When I was stopped at the traffic light the car in front of me had next to his Slayer bumper sticker a "proud Confederate American" bumper sticker with both the American and Confederate flags and this guy had New York plates. And I thought the lingering W '04 stickers were with creepy people.

I think I've seen one or two SUVs with McCain stickers here on Long Island. It looks like we still have our deep dark corner of reactionaries in this neck of the woods even as Long Island has shifted more blue in recent years.

Comment by liam1965 on 08/07/2008 20:52:27
On my drive home, I was listening to NPR, and they had a clip of a John McCain event that made me want to reach through the radio, grab him by the neck and bank his head against a wall to try to bang some sense in to him.

The question that was asked was "Knowing what you know now, would you still vote to authorize the war in Iraq?" and he said (approximately) "Y'know, a world without Saddam Hussein is safer. What do you think Saddam Hussein would be doing with $130/barrel oil? He'd be making good on his stated intentions to develop nuclear and biological weapons."

Which is wrong on SO many fronts.

First, who says oil would be at $130/barrel if we hadn't gone to war in Iraq? If we'd actually stayed full force in Afghanistan, gotten bin Laden, stabilized the country and gotten the heck out, would oil today still be $130/barrel?

Second, THERE WERE NO WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION FOUND! He was obeying the U.N. mandate, there's no reason to think he was planning on stopping any time soon. The "stated goal" was from much earlier, it's kind of like suggesting that if I won the lottery, I'd be "training for his stated goal to be a fireman" because when I was a child I said "I wanna be a fireman when I grow up".

Ludicrousy. Absolute ludicrousy. Is this ALL he has?

(Yes, I believe I may have made up the term "ludicrousy", but I don't care).

Confederates can't be american because they are confederates. Confederates committed treason. And your analogy of Slave ships is because when the confederace was created (shortly before that lovely war...you know, the civil one) All sorts of Blockades would ahe been up to stop the south from trading, or slaving. There would have been very few ships to even fly the confederate flag.

Any really proud of the confederacy scares me.

Comment by Raine on 08/07/2008 22:05:56
Uhm...

No--- yankees are not split equally with confederates. The North did not succeed from the union... And the very Idea of using that term Yankees in such a way is rather offensive. Having lived down here for a few years now, I understand what certain southerners mean when they use that phrase... So let's not go there. it degrades our members and it degrades our country. which is still as I understood... 1 Nation.

As a further note... I consider those that consider themselves members of the confederacy -- well as- treasonous. The confederacy ended when the American Civil war ended. I hope we can at least not go into tht kind of revisionist history here. There is no more confederacy.

I prefer not to refight the civil war on this blog, but I know that had I seen what livin saw in the area of the state he was in... I too would be creeped out.

Not that I disagree with what anyone has said on the topic (among other things, I'm one of them Yanks, and some parts of my ancetry go back as yankees quite a long way), but it's worth noting that the difference between "treasonous traitor" and "hero" depends on who wins.

Had our founding fathers not prevailed in the late 1700s, they would be considered treasonous today, and had the Confederacy succeeded, Jefferson Davis Robert E. Lee and the rest would be that country's Ben Franklin, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, etc.

It's a lesson I try to teach my kids, nothing is ever as clear cut as it seems, and there are few pure heroes and few pure villains.

Pretty sure the answer to BOTH is zero. The Confederacy didn't have much of a navy, and I don't think there were that many U.S. ships capable of flying over other ships back in the slave days.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. I do think you sort of have to pick a side, and you can't really claim to be a proud American if you believe that America as she exists is perfect except that she ought to be in pieces.

Oh, don't even say that. That's too scary to contemplate. Without George W. Bush, we'd never have had the Iraq war, or perhaps 9/11, or a vice President shooting an old guy in the face and getting the old guy to apologize for it, or a politicized Justice Department.

It's just too tragic to consider!

If George W. Bush never existed, think of how much food someone ELSE would have had to process into excrement!

And (on a semi-serious note), if W. didn't exist, would we all have congregated to this blog, or would there not really have been a need for the Stephanie Miller Show, which is what has brought us all together?

Evening, folks!

Civil War: TriSec's family did not reach these shores until the 1920s....so I have no vested interest; it's something that happened in the history books. I have nothing against the display of the Confederate Flag in it's proper historical context; it's quite where it belongs at Gettysburg, Fort Sumter, and other places. Otherwise, it represent opposition and Treason to these United States.

Sex: Well, like it says in my intro in the message board, Mrs. TriSec and I like sex well enough, but nothing ever came of it. (for those that don't know, young Javi is adopted.) So, according to right-wingery, since we couldn't procreate, we shouldn't be married?

State Troopers: Wha?

BrUuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuce!: We saw him on "The Rising" tour at The Razor in 2004...Mondo, if you can get tickets, I command thee to go!

WHat else did I miss?

:scurries off to check on :star:ling's little flier...

It gets strangely uncomfortable around here if you don't agree with the great masses around here. It's think my way or hit the highway in my opinion thats not really a conversation.

Comment by liam1965 on 08/08/2008 11:05:51
I'm not sure if that's true, MMB, or if it's just that this blog is fairly sparsely populated, and so there can be long silences just because no one is here...

I know sometimes I'll say something I think is particularly witty or interesting and no one responds to it, and it feels like I've insulted someone, but I think it's just that at that moment, either no one is around or they're all busy on a different topic.

(Or I'm not as witty or interesting as I am in my own head)

I'm so annoyed this morning. The trial of Salim Hamdan completed, as we all know, and even with the deck completely stacked, they could only convict him of the one charge he admitted to, being bin Laden's driver, and in spite of requesting a sentence of 30 years for that "crime", he only received a term of 5.5 years, with credit for time served.

That's not the problem. The problem is, as I knew was going to happen, the Bush Administration says that even though he's now had a trial, and even though he's now been given his punishment, that he is still an "Unlawful Enemy Combatant" and that they are therefore under no requirement to release him when his time has been served.

Yep. They had to be pushed to have a trial. They cheated at the trial. And now they're sticking their fingers in their ears and saying "Doesn't count, I don't accept it."

Idiots.

Hopefully in 5.5 years we'll be in Term 2 of the Obama Administration so any questions about his release will be a moot point.
