Good morning. I will fill in as best I can for our Loyal TriSec today. As We do every Tuesday, I present to you the stats From AntiWar.com

American Deaths
Since war began (3/19/03): 4147
Since "Mission Accomplished" (5/1/03) 4008
Since Capture of Saddam (12/13/03): 3686 3064
Since Handover (6/29/04): 3288
Since Election (1/31/05): 271

Today, we find the the Cost of war at $548,639,381,819 --the number counter is a stunner. $4,681 per household, $1,721 per person, $341.4 million per day.

Last night. we saw day one of the Democratic Convention. Inspiring? Oh yes. Touching, indeed. I cannot begin to fill the shoes of Tri Sec, but in honour of him, and our wonderful MAssachusetts blog delegation, I present to you , Senator Ted Kennedy on the floor of the Pepsi center, last evening. From Cspan:

Now -- that is what inspiration looks like.

According to IAVA, , Senator Kennedy rates B+, Senator Barack Obama a B+ and Senator John McCain a D. At a minimum, that is enough to tell you who truly supports our troops, and who does nothing but propagandize them.

In case anyone missed the Press Release, our friend Paul Reikoff and IAVA will be at the convention.
NEW YORK - Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), the nation's first and largest nonpartisan organization for veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, will attend the upcoming Democratic National Convention. IAVA will meet with delegates and convention guests, raising awareness about the most critical issues facing the 1.7 million Iraq and Afghanistan veterans and highlighting our historic fight for the new GI Bill. IAVA spokespeople, including Executive Director Paul Rieckhoff, will be available throughout next week to respond to media requests.

"When Senator Obama makes his case to the American people next week, it's critical that he address the most urgent issues facing the 1.7.million men and women who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan," said Paul Rieckhoff, Executive Director of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA). "IAVA's goal is to inject urgent issues like mental health care, traumatic brain injury and VA funding into the national political dialogue. How the next President cares for our country's newest generation of veterans will have significant, long-term implications for not only the servicemembers and their families, but the nation as a whole."

IAVA is also planning to host a major community service event for delegates and residents in Denver that will include preparing care packages for troops serving overseas. Several high profile guests are expected to attend. Additional details to follow.
He is right, it is critical that America make the right choice.

I am keeping this short today. These shoes of Tri's are big... :P

:peace: and
Raine

Good morning, Raine.

I am willing to give the LiveBlog problems a pass this week because of the convention, it's so skittish this morning (even trying to get to yesterday's blog) that I can't waste the time on it at work today, so I'll stay away. Besides, that blog and the 15000 volt testing I'm doing today don't mix and I really need to stay focused on that. I might pop by at lunch time.

I hope CNN gives as much "equal time" to the Democrats during the RNC as they seem to be giving the Repukes now.

With the exception of the Sanchez sisters, Stephanie is rather light on the guests. I've been listening to a local host who is at the convention and he is filthy with guests, including Ted Kennedy's son. Well, there was the horror of Bill-O for a few minutes. Ass wind.

Why is Stephanie's show having so many technical difficulties? The other shows are fine. That "Good Morning Denver" lady Chris calls each morning needs a taking to as it must be on their end.

Michelle was so great last night. I'm worried about Hillary and Bill, especially Bill. He's bitter, very, very bitter. At least we will end on a very high note with Barack on Thursday. And then I will be turning off the radio and TV machines. I can't bear the endless chatter that will be the Republican convention. I fear it will make my suicidal. I can only take in so much BS before I explode, which will happen soon if I hear one more instance of McCain using the POW experience as an excuse. MSNBC is reporting this story as well. From the Atlantic:

Politico's editor in chief and a colleague report on tension between the Clinton and Obama camps over Bill Clinton's speech. I've downplayed reports of tensions in the past. But sources back up the Politico to a point: things are getting a little hairy as the reality of the convention sets in. Obama aides acknowledge that there has been some recent bumps on the road but insist that reports of boiled over anger are way overplayed.

It's not surprising that a former president thinks he ought to be able to talk about what he wants. And President Clinton wants to talk about the economy as much as the theme of the night, which is national security. The Obama campaign has asked Clinton to stick to his theme. This dispute played out a bit ago, but frustration lingers.

Another point of tension, sources say, is that the Obama campaign is aware that Mark Penn is advising Bill Clinton on the speech. Obama's campaign doesn't like Mark Penn. (Also writing: Don Baer, Clinton's former communications director. Obama's campaign is fine with Baer)

Clinton is no longer the Big Dog anymore, and he is not handling that very well. After this convention and definitely after Nov 4, he will cease to be relevent. I appreciate a lot of what he did as president, but he is not showing the grace that one expects from someone retired from that office. I am looking forward to a new day...

To be honest, Clinton's irrelevance is largely due to not just his recent actions during this camapign, but also in retrospect upon his own terms in office. There are many good things that happened during his time in the White House, but there are also many things that were not so good (IMO the greatest mistake was keeping Greenspan in place).

It doesn't help when you have scum like Mark Penn helping to pee in the pool. Too bad they can't force the Clintons to get rid of him once and for all. He sure as hell didn't help their campaign.

I agree with you for the most part but, Bobber define your terms a little there. Cease to be relevant as theformer titular head of the Democratic party? Cease to be relevant has a leader within the party? Clearly they (The Clintons) are not the locus of power in the party they once were. Bubba will continue to have a say in what goes on internally in the party just cause he was president. What I would like him to do is swallow the bitterness and get back to running the foundation, which does a whole lot of good.

A thought from left field. I wonder if the Republican convention will receive more than one hour of coverage per night on ABC, CBS and NBC. With all of the commercials, that's about 42 minutes of the Democratic convention. Pathetic and maddening. Hopefully people without cable or satellite have found PBS, which is doing a pretty good job. However, I agree with Raine. CSPAN is doing a great job of it.

Did I mention I went and saw "Star Wars: the Clone Wars?" I don't think I did. The acting was much less wooden then in episodes 1-3. The animation was almost as wooden as the acting in episodes 1-3. They didn't break any new ground there. Overall I give 2.5 out of 5 stars.

Kind of sad, since the cartoon was pretty good.

I guess you mean the one that ran on Cartoon Network.

No, I am talking about Clone Wars. Where you go to the theatre and plunk down hard earned cash get a ticket and sit in the dark with other people. Such as the animated band of kids behind me who were on day three of no school and were being taken to the movies by dad so mom could get two hours of peace and quiet.

I have the first season on DVD - it's fantastic, animated by the same person who does Dexter's Laboratory. I haven't checked for the second season DVD in a while but I want to get it.

Lucas effectivly pissed me off with number 2 and i decided never to give him another cent...until i was dragged to number 3...which i'm glad to say, i never gave him another cent.

But did anyone see the scene in The Simpsons where Lenny and Carl had a light-saber fight arguing over whether "Phantom Menace" or "Attack of the Clones" sucked more.

Keys to suckiness: Amount of screen time Jar Jar Binks gets.

attack of the clones sucked more.

Reasons:

No Liam Neeson (Only watchable person in that film. Though McGregor was alright)

Hayden Christensen (Cardboard cutout would have been better)

Yoda in a lightsaber battle (Cause we all truly wanted to see that... )

Twenty straight minutes of Hayden trying to act like he's in love...to twenty straight minutes of hayden trying to act like he was in pain. (Still say Cardboard cutout would have been better)

For no reason what-so-ever a mention to the deathstar. (Takes them twenty years to build the first one, and only 2 years to build the second one)

If you wanna hop out of the cartoon/science fiction ditch you can see interviews with Jimmy Carter and Patrick Kennedy at the convention here. http://kabc.com/Article.asp?id=732598

Doug has some right wingnut tendencies, but he actually leans toward the middle a lot of the time. He had an overnight show that I liked much better, but I likee him nonetheless. He is nice to "our kind" and I guess he is my radio guilty pleasure.

Hopefully people without cable or satellite have found PBS, which is doing a pretty good job. However, I agree with Raine. CSPAN is doing a great job of it.

TODAY'S DEMOCRACY NOW!:

* Michelle Obama Delivers Keynote Address on Opening Day of Democratic Convention *

The Democrats opened their four-day convention on Monday with thousands of delegates, party elders and lobbyists flooding the halls of the Pepsi Center in downtown Denver. Headlining the opening day was Michelle Obama, who delivered the final address of the night before a cheering crowd on the convention floor. We play highlights and speak with Salim Muwakkil, senior editor of In These Times.

* Jeremy Scahill Grills Democratic Lawmakers on the War, Obama's Foreign Policy Team and the Corporate Money Behind the Big Show *

As the Democrats gather under a massive banner proclaiming that change is on the way, serious questions abound about some of the key issues that have brought protesters here to Denver. We sent Democracy Now! correspondent Jeremy Scahill into the Pepsi Center to ask Senators Carl Levin, Charles Rangel, Reps. Maxine Waters, Dennis Kucinich and others the questions the corporate media is failing to ask, from the war in Iraq and Obama's foreign policy team to impeachment and the death penalty.

* Denver Police Arrest 91, Fire Pepper Spray & Pepper Balls at Protesters *

As the Democrats celebrated inside the Pepsi Center on the opening day of the convention, outside on the streets police pepper-sprayed protesters and rounded up dozens of them in mass arrests near Civic Center Park.

* As Democratic Convention Kicks Off, Massive Security Presence Clamps Down on Dissent in Denver *

The 2008 Democratic National Convention kicked off Monday at the Pepsi Center in downtown Denver. We play highlights of the speeches from the convention floor, and we take a look at the massive security presence in the streets of the city with Eileen Clancy of I-Witness Video, who has been closely monitoring the protests in the streets.

* Former US Senator Jean Carnahan and Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan on the 2008 Race, Their Role as Convention Delegates & Voter Registration *

As we continue our coverage of the 2008 Democratic National Convention, I am joined now by two Democratic delegates from Missouri who also come from one of the state's most storied political families. Former Senator Jean Carnahan served in Congress from 2001 to 2002. I am also joined by Jean Carnahan's daughter, Robin Carnahan. She is Missouri's Secretary of State, where she has focused on voter and consumer rights.

* Iraq Veterans Against the War Descends on Denver to Call on Democrats to Endorse True Antiwar Platform *

On Monday, IVAW delivered a letter to Senator Barack Obama's DNC campaign headquarters asking that he endorse the organization's three main points: the immediate withdrawal of all occupying forces from Iraq, full and adequate healthcare and benefits to all returning service members and veterans, and reparations made to the Iraqi people for the destruction caused by the US war and occupation. This weekend here in Denver, Amy Goodman caught up with IVAW member Sgt. Matthis Chiroux, who served in the US Army for five years and a few months ago publicly refused to deploy to Iraq, subjecting him to risk of prosecution.

That's why she's been behaving. She knows that if she's seen as trying to skink Obama's bid than her own political future is toast. Now, her best shot at the White House is wither 2012 if Obama loses or possibly not until 2016 although her age might be up there at that point.

Would liked to have heard something about Obama being ready on day one, some repudiation of the damage she did during the primary that McCain is now using.

Some kind of mention of Obama's unique qualifactions (other than being the Democratic nominee).

Something beyond - vote for Obama because he is a Democrat.

Sorry that I'm not as impressed with that speech - it was really good for Clinton - but you could use it as a Mad Lib - plug in anyone else's name in place of "Obama" - and it would be impossible to tell the difference (other than the brief reference to his early community organizing).

The FAUX news assholes: "Hillary's speech was mundane........."

R-i-g-h-t. ;)

Shocked, SHOCKED I am to find this kind of reaction from the network that only a few months ago was asking Dems why they weren't supporting her more.

Certainly NOT mundane -- got the Dem pride going for sure.

Loved the Twin Cities line -- priceless.

I'll agree with that to some extent. She really wasn't pumping up Obama at all. She did take care of the primary goal, which was to challenge the PUMAs to get on board. It's just a shame she spent so much time talking about herself.

I guess thats like expecting her to apologize for voting for the war.

You think they keep Pat around so the crowd can have someone they hate?
