Democratic Convention Day 3
Author: BobR    Date: 08/27/2008 12:22:41

Last night was the big night for Hillary's speech. Concerns abounded as to whether she would be able to convince the PUMAs to get behind their party's presumptive nominee. The results were as good as could be expected. There were other speeches earlier in the evening that were also quite good, sadly missed by anyone watching anything other than PBS or C-SPAN.

Hillary spent close to half of her speech talking about her own campaign. Perhaps that was a last bit of meat to toss to her supporters. She wrapped that up by saying that both she & Obama supported the same things and that the only way to get that was by voting Democrat in Nov.

The last part of her speech was much better, where she challenged her supporters to think about whether they supprted her campaign just for her as a person, or for the causes she champions:
I want you to ask yourselves: Were you in this campaign just for me? Or were you in it for that young Marine and others like him? Were you in it for that mom struggling with cancer while raising her kids? Were you in it for that boy and his mom surviving on the minimum wage? Were you in it for all the people in this country who feel invisible?

She trashed McCain. She discussed the women's suffrage movement, hopefully reinforcing the point that voting for Obama would help continue to drive that forward, and McCain would stall it. She quoted Harriet Tubman:
This is the story of America. Of women and men who defy the odds and never give up.
How do we give this country back to them?
By following the example of a brave New Yorker, a woman who risked her life to shepherd slaves along the Underground Railroad.
And on that path to freedom, Harriet Tubman had one piece of advice.
If you hear the dogs, keep going.
If you see the torches in the woods, keep going.
If they're shouting after you, keep going.
Don't ever stop. Keep going.
If you want a taste of freedom, keep going.
Even in the darkest of moments, ordinary Americans have found the faith to keep going.

I hope it was as inspiring to her supporters as it was to me.

Some of the other speakers were great too. Dennis Kucinich was electrifying. I can't seem to find the text of his speech, but you can watch it here, in case you missed it:

Brian Schweitzer (Governor of MT) stood in for the dearly departed Ann Richards and got the crowd roaring with:
Even leaders in the oil industry know that Sen. McCain has it wrong. We simply can’t drill our way to energy independence, even if you drilled in all of John McCain’s backyards - including the ones he can’t even remember!

The Party's party continues today (and tonight) with more speeches. The most highly (and nervously) anticipated of course is from the Big Dawg himself - Bill Clinton. He was requested to keep to the theme of the evening, which is National Security. Clinton wanted to talk about domestic issues. Perhaps he'll find a way to tie them together (what? - our country's financial security isn't a national security issue?).

The keynote speaker of course will be Joe Biden, in what will surely be a rip-roaring evisceration of Bush and McCain's disastrous foreign policy stances. Those in the front rows might want to wear raincoats to keep from being splashed with blood.

Also on the list are Governor Bill Richardson and Senators Evan Bayh, John Kerry and Jay Rockefeller. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Convention home state Senator Ken Salazar, House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn, and Congressman Robert Wexler (D-FL) along with Chicago Mayor Richard Daley. Representative Patrick Murphy (D-PA) and Iraq War veteran Tammy Duckworth.

It should be a great night for the politically addicted.

Saw Hills speech thought she was really good. I aways forget how dynamic a speaker she is when you only hear her in sound bites its a easy thing to do.

Good morning all

I won't make the same mistake twice. I won't be home tonight so TiVo 1 is set on CSPAN while TiVo 2 is set to MSNBC to catch the Dr. Maddow goodness. Damn good thing I just added a 320GB drive, it's gonna be full soon.

Couldn't stay awake to watch Hillary's speech (10PM is just too late for me) but it looks like she put party first for that she gets a big "YOU GO GIRL!"

Poor baby! I pass a bunch of houses and stables on the way to work every day, it's probably one of the happier things I get to see on my commute. What cold hearted people wouldn't just let the poor thing live out the rest of its days there!

Morning all! Dare I say that for the first time (in a while) I was proud of Hillary?

Well imma darin'! I sat and listened to her, disregarding as much of the bad feelings and deeds I had witnessed during the campaign because I knew that she would be doing her best to do that very same thing. And as she went on describing the struggles of women, and more broadly the struggles of the nation and its people to overcome adversity and prosper regardless of any factor, I could only think of those hearts and minds who believed so much in her that they were willing to give up everything and everyone else for her to just win.

And it was in that moment that I finally understood. Despite all the bickering during the primaries, it really was that close all the way. Either way it would be a turning point in history, but for those who lived and breathed Hillary for the past two years there was no other choice, until there was no other choice. I personally never had that experience - not when I was backing Edwards, nor now that I have been with Obama for several months.

Oh my.. I'm all misty-eyed writing this.

Hillary, I say this to you - I forgive you and those who support you for what happened. Let's all go make us some more history - and put another Democrat in the White House and a bunch more in the Senate.

No, that jackass Mark Penn is NOT invited.

Seems to be long stretches of no activity for some reason. Lunch is probably the best explanation about now. Actual interference by "work" is another, at least it is here.

I need a widescreen monitor. Off to the right side I see the Goldwater/Miller ad, and all I see is C.C. (heh heh). While C.C. is quite attractive in her own right, it would be nice if I could see Mama as well without having to use the scroll bar all the time.

Comment by livingonli on 08/27/2008 17:12:14
Whatever did happen to the Goldwater/Miller campaign? It just seemed to fizzle out. CC stopped appearing on the show and there haven't been any appearances.

Obviously it achieved its objective. Goldwater's DVD sold out and Stephanie's show is rated #1 world-wide.

On top of all the liveblog aggrivations, we're changing our documentation system here at work to one that has better revision control. Obviously the cunning plan has not been thought all the way through, as I've found some little glitches as I've tried to save off the first report I did under the new system. Another gotcha is most of the test bay PCs are running Win2K and Office 2001(?) and they'll have to be "upgraded" to XP and Office 2003 (at least). Which means new te$t $oftware, and some of the processes were written in Excel Basic which requires a substantial rewrite. WHEEEE!

Was this already mentioned? Sorry if it was, I'm in a cupcake-smell induced coma:

In what might be his most controversial attack ad in a campaign dominated by them, presumptive G.O.P. presidential nominee John McCain today launched a new TV spot attacking Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill)'s two children.

According to political insiders, a negative ad targeting a rival's offspring is highly unorthodox, especially when the children in question are under the age of ten.

But after the two Obama kids scored in their performance on national television last night at the Democratic convention, "we had to do something to give the American people some straight talk on those two brats," Sen. McCain said today.

In the ad, which is being broadcast in key swing states, an announcer intones, "They're the cutest children in the world - but are they ready to lead?"

The spot uses visuals to link the two Obama kids to other famously cute kids, such as the young Drew Barrymore and the Cabbage Patch dolls.

The commercial goes on to blast the Obama children for "smiling and giggling but refusing to state their position on offshore oil drilling."

While some critics questioned how well the ad would play in living rooms across America, Sen. McCain defended it, telling reporters, "It played very well in all of my living rooms."

Gustav may hit gulf

PORT-AU-PRINCE (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Gustav drifted away from Haiti and the Dominican Republic on Wednesday after killing 16 people, and forecasters warned it may still become a dangerous hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico oil fields.

Gustav was moving to the west-northwest at 5 mph (8 kph), on a path that would allow it to regain strength over deep warm waters south of Cuba and take it into the Gulf of Mexico as potentially the first major hurricane to threaten U.S. energy installations there since hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005.

Fucking idiots!

But besides the big screen, Hannah can often be seen on the frontlines of various environmental movements. Last year, she traveled to Ecuador to meet with indigenous groups suing Chevron to stop contaminating the Amazon, and before that, she spent three weeks camped in a tree in a South Central farm in Los Angeles.

Bobby Jindall is not going to the GOP convention now because of it. If there's a repeat of Katrina will the Repubs still be yelling "state and local" if the same fiasco happens again.

From Richard Wolffe MSNBC: Bill Clinton wrote his speech today. Obama has seen it, but only an hour ago and did not ask him to change it. It is expected to go longer than the 10 minutes, and he mentions barack about 10 seconds in. This is not with the reports that Mark Penn helped write the speech, according to Wolffe, everyone was shut out. It s coming straight from Clinotn himself.

I feel a little more confortable, right now. Knowing that Obama saw it and only the big dawg wrote it...
