The tRump Dump: Congressional Address Edition
Author: BobR    Date: 03/01/2017 14:49:06

Last night was pResident tRump's first address to a joint meeting of Congress (generally known as the State of the Union address after the president's 1st year in office). As a disclaimer, I just couldn't bring myself to watch it, so all commentary is based on the transcript. From what I've read, there were no outbursts of "Liar!" from the Dems, so kudos to them for maintaining decorum while lie after lie washed over them.

NPR has provided an annotated transcript of the address, so all quotes will be drawn from that. I cannot say with any certainty that this is exactly what he said, because we all know how he tends to go off script.

He started off condemning the attacks on Jewish sites (Bannon must not have approved this part). He spent all of 1 minute on it before moving on to describe a new pride in America. He didn't say "white pride", but that was the dog whistle.

From there he started talking about spending money here at home. He made a weird tossed-off reference to "inner cities" before moving onto infrastructure repairs (something Dems have been begging for through both of President Obama's terms):
For too long, we have watched our middle-class shrink as we have exported our jobs and wealth to foreign countries. We financed and built one global project after another, but ignored the fates of our children. The inner cities of Chicago, Baltimore, Detroit, and so many other places throughout our land. We’ve defended the borders of other nations while leaving our own borders wide open for anyone to cross and for drugs to pour in at a now unprecedented rate.

Then tRump described a vision for which he has absolutely no plans to accomplish:
Dying industries will come roaring back to life, heroic veterans will get the care they so desperately need. Our military will be given the resources its brave warriors so richly deserve. Crumbling infrastructure will be replaced with new roads, bridges, tunnels, airports and railways, gleaming across our very very beautiful land. Our terrible drug epidemic will slow down and ultimately stop, and our neglected inner cities will see a rebirth of hope, safety, and opportunity. Above all else, we will keep our promises to the American people.

He then took credit for jobs, the stock market, and military savings, all of which were well on their way before the election. He also described how he was going to help industry by removing regulations that protect consumers and other Americans. He described a country teetering on the precipice (which by all measures of data is completely untrue) and his actions to "save" it (all of which are based on an alarming uptick in militarization).

He talked about immigration, borders, crime, terrorism, conflating all of them as if they were a single issue, rather than separate problems each requiring complicated solutions. He mentioned the Supreme Court and his nominee (Antonin Scalia's widow was in the gallery). He moved onto jobs, taxes, tariffs, and manufacturing, presumably while wearing one of his signature tRump suits made in China. He blamed immigrants for costing taxpayers money, when in reality, they add $17B per year to our tax base.

He called ObamaCare a disaster, and called for Congress to repeal it and replace it with VoucherCare, based on tax credits and HSAs (hint: the people who need it the most don't pay enough in taxes to cover the premium). He also called for a limit on punitive damages in malpractice suits.

He talked about education, once again calling for a voucher system, this time for school choice. America: Land of the Coupon Book.

After that, he moved on to violence and crime... which disturbingly transitioned to the military. He managed to use the death of the Seal team soldier Ryan Owens to build pathos and applause. Owens's widow was there in the gallery (although his parents - who have called for an inquiry - were not). I am so glad I didn't have to watch that. Disgusting...

from there, it was on to NATO and our alliances and how we need them to "pay their share". He promoted a mostly non-interventionist policy, but also helping countries rebuild so that refugees can return home.
We must learn from the mistakes of the past –- we have seen the war and the destruction that have ravaged and raged throughout the world, all across the world.

The only long-term solution for these humanitarian disasters, in many cases, is to create the conditions where displaced persons can safely return home and begin the long, long process of rebuilding.

Of course - this is in direct contradiction to the beginning of his speech where he said we spend too much helping others, and not enough helping ourselves.

He wrapped it up with platitudes to America and American ingenuity. Rah rah...

Damn poor Bobber. That means he had to actually read some transcripts of PEEOTUS' "speech."

My interpretation of the reviews about that thing last night:

YAY! the five year old managed not to poop in his pants and fling it all over. .

Good morning.

The theme of the speech, according to NPR this morning was "rising from the ashes."

Thanks, Babe. This morning I reading how people think he suddenly became '*residentail'

He read a Miller/Bannon speech -- with the tone softened by Pirebus.

I give him a day or two and we'll see that lipstick was as long lasting as promised

The ashes of what?
Lowest unemployment in a very long time?
Strongest economy in a very long time?
Lowest violent crime in a very long time?
Lowest "illegal" immigration in a very long time?

Yeah - tRump is going to burn all that down. Maybe it's THOSE ashes they're talking about.

Has anyone watched the Dem response to the speech? Is it worth 9 minutes of my life?

Not yet.

Based on this, it looks really uncomfotable:

Good morning, bloggers!! How are you?

BobR, I saw it. I think that it is as the former governor of Kentucky stressed the importance of Obamacare's success in his state. I would say read up on his speech and then decide.

Here is a link that I found on Salon: Time is running out for American democracy, historian says. (Extended version of the interview can be found here.) The historian is also the author of "His election in November came as a surprise."

We have a lot of decisions to make and of great importance.

Apparently, he had "facts" about the number of people getting SNAP, which of course he called food stamps. He also yammered about the number of people receiving TANF, which he called "welfare." I haven't looked at the number yet or when they were at the level he quoted.

I found what I was looking for:
Tonight, as I outlined the next steps we must take as a country, we must honestly acknowledge the circumstances we inherited. 94 million Americans are out of the labor force. Over 43 million people are now living in poverty, and over 43 million Americans are on food stamps.

On 94 million out of work. Politifact says noeee. They rate that as false. It is actually about a quarter of that.

On 43 million getting SNAP, Politifact says yes! However, there are a bunch of qualifiers.

What the advance copy via WaPo:
I just spoke to General Mattis, who reconfirmed that, and I quote, "Ryan was a part of a highly successful raid that generated large amounts of vital intelligence that will lead to many more victories in the future against our enemies." Ryan's legacy is etched into eternity. For as the Bible teaches us, there is no greater act of love than to lay down one's life for one's friends. Ryan laid down his life for his friends, for his country, and for our freedom –- we will never forget him.

To those allies who wonder what kind of friend America will be, look no further than the heroes who wear our uniform.

I just spoke to our great General Mattis, just now, who reconfirmed that, and I quote, "Ryan was a part of a highly successful raid that generated large amounts of vital intelligence that will lead to many more victories in the future against our enemies." Ryan's legacy is etched into eternity. Thank you. Thank you.

And Ryan is looking down right now, you know that, and he’s very happy because I think you just broke a record. For as the Bible teaches us, there is no greater act of love than to lay down one's life for one's friends. Ryan laid down his life for his friends, for his country, and for our freedom –- and we will never forget Ryan.

I wonder who will tell Fat Donnie.
Across seven networks — ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC — Trump’s speech notched a 27.8 household rating in those early ratings. Across these same networks, President Obama’s first address of a joint session of Congress on Feb. 24, 2009, drew an overnight household rating of 33.4, a difference of about 17%.

WBZ today had to rebut people calling the station. It seems that people wanted to know why only the Democratic responses to Mr. Trump were being broadcast.

Without irony, the announcer stated that we are the bluest state, and our entire delegation is Democrats, which is why no Republican views were aired.

Yes, people really are that ignorant.
