Hell of a thing to wake up to this morning.

Facebook
NEW HAMPTON, N.H. - A Quincy teenager has died after a single-car crash on I-93 north in New Hampshire.

At 6:30 a.m. Friday, police were called to mile marker 72 in New Hampton for a vehicle that had gone off the roadway.

Police say it's unknown what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway, but they believe speed was a factor. The vehicle crashed through a guardrail and became airborne before landing on its side.

The driver, identified as 18-year-old Lucien Therberge of Quincy, Massachusetts was pronounced dead at the scene. A 16-year-old passenger was seriously injured and flown to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon. No additional information on their condition was available.

The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information should contact New Hampshire State Police at (603)271-1162.

The youth in question is "Luke" Theberge...senior patrol leader of Boy Scout Troop 42, Quincy. I have known this young man since he joined scouting. I know his father. I knew his mother. I know his [almost] step-mother.

It's doubly a tragedy, as the young man's mother passed away due to an illness some years ago, leaving the elder Mr. Theberge a widower.

We camp with this troop several times a year - it's all great fun.

Until it isn't.

Rest in Peace, Luke.

Naturally, the tributes are pouring in. I know many of these fine gentlemen from Troop 42. Mr. Leach has something to add - picking his tribute because it includes a picture.

Some tragedies tear the heart...

Scouting is a close family, and yesterday, we lost someone very special - Luc Theberge, the smiling young man in the center of this photo (taken just this past March). A car accident, heading up to the NH mountains to do one of the things he loved - backpacking. Luc was just 18 - and he had already touched more people than some folks have at 3 times his age.

I've known him since he was a baby - he comes from a very special family, who has known tragedy before, yet continues to give generously and unselfishly to the youth in our community. My heart, my soul goes out to them in this time of indescribable sorrow. Please pray for the Theberge family - keep them in your thoughts.

I, for one, will remember Luc's infectious smile and positive attitude - and carry that with me, in my heart, till my own time comes, when I hope to see him again.

Mike
