Wagging the Dog - Again
Author: BobR    Date: 06/19/2019 13:26:40

In August, 1964, the U.S. claimed that North Vietnam attacked one of our naval vessels in the Gulf of Tonkin. It was used as a rationale for going to war with North Vietnam, a war which lasted 11 years (from the incident) and cost almost 60K American lives (and many more lives among the various countries of southeast Asia). It was only 40 years later when the Pentagon Papers were released where it became apparent that it was a "false flag" operation, now commonly known as "wag the dog".

That was repeated again in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks as the Bush administration drummed up a war against Iraq using fake evidence.

Are we headed there once again? Last week, a Japanese tanker was attacked. The U.S. is unequivocably blaming Iran. They claim that Iranian mines and torpedoes damaged the ship:
The Pentagon said that the crew of one of the tankers, the Japanese Kokuka Courageous, found an unexploded limpet mine on its hull following an initial explosion. The crew abandoned ship and was rescued by the U.S. Navy’s USS Bainbridge.

“Later that day, an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Gashti Class patrol boat approached Kokuka Courageous and was observed and recorded by a U.S. Navy MH-60 helicopter removing the unexploded limpet mine from Kokuka Courgeous,” the Pentagon said in a statement Monday.

However, Japan is pushing back on that story, saying they were attacked by flying objects:
“The crew told us something came flying at the ship, and they found a hole,” Katada said. “Then some crew witnessed the second shot.”

Katada said there was no possibility that the ship, carrying 25,000 tons of methanol, was hit by a torpedo.

Does that mean Iran isn't responsible? Not necessarily, but the Pentagon story is so full of holes, it's not really a question of whether Iran was responsible, but why the Pentagon wants everyone to think so.

It seem that it's being used as a justification to send more troops to the Middle East:
The U.S. is sending 1,000 additional troops to the Middle East as tensions with Iran continue to rise after recent attacks on two oil tankers, which the U.S. says were carried out by Iranian forces.

Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan announced the new troop deployment in a statement Monday, saying U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) requested the forces "for defensive purposes to address air, naval and ground-based threats in the Middle East."

"The recent Iranian attacks validate the reliable, credible intelligence we have received on hostile behavior by Iranian forces and their proxy groups that threaten United States personnel and interests across the region," Shanahan said. "The United States does not seek conflict with Iran. The action today is being taken to ensure the safety and welfare of our military personnel working throughout the region and to protect our national interests."

When you look at all the trouble tRump is in, and the election season starting to ramp up, these events become especially ominous when juxtaposed against a comment tRump made back in January:
Hours before his first State of the Union, President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he wants to unite the country amid “tremendous divisiveness” and hopes he can do so without a traumatic event affecting Americans.

[...]

“I would love to be able to bring back our country into a great form of unity,” Trump said. “Without a major event where people pull together, that’s hard to do. But I would like to do it without that major event because usually that major event is not a good thing.”

I am not comfortable with any of this.

Good morning, bloggers!!!

I hope that everyone is well.

I was out late with my brother looking for a new vehicle for his wife, who just had back surgery on Monday. We got it but I did not get home until late.

I fear that President Trump believes that he can only win if there is a war and an external enemy. Dictators and would-be dictators often need to create an external enemy to complement a created internal enemy -- in Trump's case, everyone who did not vote for him.

Its Aldi's competitor in the small grocery niche. They are both German imports. They do really well in our markets.

I think one opening up in College Park bodes well for the area.

I can't believe Manassas had one before College Park. That's mind blowing to me.

All we have here are the chain supermarkets. There is an Asian market in my town which specializes in Japanese and Korean foods mixed with conventional supermarket fare.

All they seem to be building around Manassas are more houses and redneck/low cost retail. The houses are priced too high for the types of stores they put out here. Everything interesting goes to Gainsville or Woodbridge. (Yes I'm being whiney about this )

Also - those Asian markets can sometimes have great prices on meats and produce. In Atlanta, I used to get a whole pork loin for an amazing per lb price, and cut it into boneless pork chops myself. Same for whole beef sirloins or tenderloins.

Speaking of German-owned grocers, I went to my local Aldi and was somewhat frustrated. The overpriced, scruffy all organic produce was a real turn off.

We've found the private-label stuff to be the best buys (plus dairy, meat, and eggs)
