Obama takes Dixville Notch

DIXVILLE NOTCH, N.H. (AP) — Barack Obama came up a big winner in the presidential race in Dixville Notch and Hart's Location, N.H., where tradition of having the first Election Day ballots tallied lives on.

Democrat Obama defeated Republican John McCain by a count of 15 to 6 in Dixville Notch, where a loud whoop accompanied the announcement in Tuesday's first minutes. The town of Hart's Location reported 17 votes for Obama, 10 for McCain and two for write-in Ron Paul. Independent Ralph Nader was on both towns' ballots but got no votes.

"I'm not going to say I wasn't surprised," said Obama supporter Tanner Nelson Tillotson, whose name was drawn from a bowl to make him Dixville Notch's first voter.

With 115 residents between them, Dixville Notch and Hart's Location get every eligible voter to the polls beginning at midnight on Election Day. Between them, the towns have been enjoying their first-vote status since 1948.

Being first means something to residents of the Granite State, home of the nation's earliest presidential primary and the central focus — however briefly — of the vote-watching nation's attention every four years.

Town Clerk Rick Erwin said Dixville Notch is proud of its tradition, but added, "The most important thing is that we exemplify a 100 percent vote."

Dixville Notch resident Peter Johnson said the early bird electoral exercise "is fun." A former naval aviator, Johnson said he was voting for McCain, but added, "I think both candidates are excellent people."

Voting was carried out in a room in a local hotel festooned with political memorabilia from campaigns long past. Each voter gets an individual booth so there are no lines at the magic hour. The votes were quickly counted, announced and recorded on a posterboard that proclaims, "First in the Nation, Dixville Notch."

Morning!

Well mom and I were two of the 50,000 last night and didn't get home until almost midnight but it was worth it. :D

And we got up at 4:30am to get out to wait in line until the polls open this morning. I have NEVER seen our polling place with a line, it was frickin' amazing. But with less the 5hrs sleep we voted happily and noticed on leaving that the line had grown outside. We passed 3 other polling stations on the way to work, everyone was packed with lines well out the doors.

I really believe change is only 24 hours away!

I awoke at about 2 am this morning.

Nestled up against Mrs. TriSec, I just watched the night pass, ocassionally catching another catnap or two.

I was up and about at 5:30, same as always...cursing that "Trouble with Tribbles" had to be on this morning at 6 am. (one of my favorites...)

Out the door at 6:45 for the brief trip down the street to the polls. The line was already down the hall and into the stairwell.

Some muffled announcements from the Poll workers about street addresses and the ballot questions, and then the line was moving.

Everything was smooth; I was number 32 in my precinct.

Standing outside the polling place...I noticed a sugar maple that seemed particularly vibrant this morning...the sun shone brightly on my city through a slight fog, giving it a surreal quality...and the air seemed to be a bit fresher and cooler in the fall chill.

I've done all I can. All we can do now is wait, and hope.

In case anyone didn't know:

Why we vote on Tuesday:

...people used to have to travel overnight to their polling location. (In 1845, horse was the preferred method of transport.) In an effort to avoid religious days of rest, Congress chose Tuesday, leaving Monday and Wednesday as travel days. Tuesday was voting (and horse-resting) day.

Also, Freebies today:

Starbucks is giving away a tall cup of brewed coffee on the house.

Between 5 and 8pm, Ben and Jerry's is celebrating democracy by giving away a free scoop of ice cream.

Krispy Kreme is giving away a star-shaped doughnut with "patriotic sprinkles" to anyone wearing an "I Voted" sticker.

Lessee, no freebies, no extended early voting, no late voting tonight... must be a Republican. :P

Heya 4Fers, :coffee:

Last night I went to see Iron Jawed Angels (shown for free courtesy of the League of Women Voters). It is a remarkable story and one well-worth remembering as we all exercise our right to vote today. It is important to remember that this right was not always available to every citizen of this democracy, but fought and earned through unbelievable struggle on the part of those who have gone before us. Just my thought for the morning. I am around home today, just waiting to get a call from the Dem Headquarters with directions to a voter's home and info about his/her precinct and then I'm outta here, giving rides to the polls.

Cheers,

mfaye &

Morning all.. My landlord was out the door before me this morning for a change, headed to his polling station to help move folks through the process. Not sure how long the opening lines were, and no idea how they'll be when I finally get there, but I don't care - I've been waiting for this moment for two years and yearning for it for much longer.

Random Anecdotal Evidence:

Random drove around to look at polls (pictures coming soon. And a funny video). about 100 people at each polling place at opening (7:00am eastern) and 100 people at each polling place two hours later (9:00am eastern).

Multiply that by 800 polling places in this county alone.

So what's that mean for turn out?

The no freebies for voters thing is federal law - it's considered a bribe.

Which is why Starbucks, B&J and Krispy Kreme all changed their offers to a freebie for all, whether you voted or not.

Comment by wickedpam on 11/04/2008 14:19:10
well, we were in a field last night and he was late thanks to air traffic at Dulles (it was suppose to start at 9 but didn't until about 10 /10:30) and still there about 50K.
