Hurricane season is starting off with a bang. The Bahamas were absolutely destroyed as Hurricane Dorian became a category 5 storm and then slowed to a crawl passing over Grand Bahama island. It will take a long time for them to recover. It appeared that Palm Beach would be the next target, and indeed the area has gotten whipped by strong winds and torrential rains, but the storm - as updated forecasts predicted - stayed out to sea.

That last factoid will likely be touted as a response to a group of evangelicals in Jacksonville, FL who prayed on the beach to keep the storm out to sea:
A bunch of Christians who seem to think their magical words will keep Hurricane Dorian away from Florida gathered at Jacksonville Beach Pier Thursday night to tell the storm to “calm down.”

Because that’s how hurricanes work. They obey human instructions. But only if you believe in the right God.

That is about as useful as getting your friends to blow really hard to reverse the hurricane’s direction.

They might have been better off driving away from Jacksonville or stocking up on supplies… but, okay, I guess prayer keeps them busy while everyone else does something useful.

[...]

It’s going to be a rough weekend. There’s no reason to think God’s about to save you from what Christians also believe is one of God’s own creations.

It's not just evangelicals who do odd things when facing down a hurricane. Apparently the baker in a Jacksonville Publix grocery store (Jacksonville again... WTH?... It's like GA except there's a beach nearby) made a Dorian-themed cake, iced to look like FL, the storm, and the Cone of Uncertainty.

Of course, there's also the Moron in Chief who said (for the 4th time) that he's never heard of a Cat 5 storm before, despite Hurricane Irma hitting just 2 years ago. He also claimed - despite all evidence as well as corrections by NOAA - that Alabama was in danger.

This is what it looks like when people are either too stupid or blinded by faith to listen to and trust the science over what they believe to be true. Scientists have been saying for years that global warming would cause climate change and generate bigger, stronger, and more frequent storms. Right now, there is another tropical storm in the Gulf (Ferdinand) that is hitting Mexico; it could have easily gone a little north and slammed Houston. There is also another tropical storm (Gabrielle) in the Atlantic, with a couple others on the verge of forming.

It doesn't even need to be a hurricane to be a problem. There has been flooding along the coasts of the Great Lakes the last few years, as lake levels have risen and stayed consistently above long-standing averages.

Hurricane season is just starting, and FEMA will be very busy the next couple months as the earth tries to correct its overheated ocean and gulf waters. We can help (long term) by listening to and believing the science that tells us we've been warming the earth since the industrial revolution. It's never too late to make the changes that can help prevent Mother Earth from eradicating the virus making her sick - us.

Context is important.

From the look of things outside my window, FEMA isn't going to be spending a lot of time in Jacksonville. It is windy and raining, but not that hard. I've seen thunderstorms worse than this.

What is a little nerve-wracking is the sound of the wind. whipping through the trees.

It isn't constant unlike the chorus of tree frogs.

Went out for wee bit as the storm is decreasing in strength (not that it was all that strong here) and pretty much everything is closed. The only big retailer that was open was...

Wait for it...
.
.
.
.
Wal-Mart.

I know that Waffle house isn;t a big retailer, but I've learned if they close, that's a BFD,
