Weekend Update

Good morning.

OK, so it's later than usual on a Saturday. I've been skimming around the news, looking for something, anything, that we haven't beaten to death in recent weeks.

So, I failed. Kobe Bryant is still dead. There's some new details about the crash, and a lengthy piece recently written by a former Naval Aviator detailing some minutiae about VMC vs IMC conditions, but other than me that would likely bore most of you to tears.

So, on to Coronavirus. Seems like the latest superbug that's on the verge of decimating us all. I wonder if some future society will look back on us like we look back on the Middle Ages and ponder what it must have been like to live through the Black Death. But, I digress.

We do have a rarity here in New England today - a mild, early-spring day. Since the advent of climate change, we don't have true spring in New England anymore. February/March and sometimes even April is when we often get massive, late-season snowstorms. Thus far, none have materialized. But there's plenty of time.

And then the Red Sox open Grapefruit League play today, against Tampa Bay. I'd normally be excited by this, but we're all waiting for the other shoe to drop on Alex Cora.

I'm more excited by the offseason moves made by my second team, my beloved Cincinnati Reds. Maybe they'll be competitive this year for the first time in a long time.

So what's up where you sit today?

Well, things are looking up!

In addition to it being opening day in Grapefruit and Cactus league play, I've just learned that a particularly dear friend of mine is returning to work!

"Captain Matty" (stage name) was the Head Conductor just before me. He left over a year ago for perceived greener pastures. But not long afterwards he was in a particularly devastating car accident (he was nearly killed) and after months of rehab, he's coming back to something familiar to try to get back to where he once belonged.
