Good Morning.

It is, at long last, inauguration eve.

More than 25,000 National Guard troops have turned Washington, DC into an armed camp. That's more people than the population of some towns throughout the United States.

One of our National Icons, perhaps our 'front porch' is closed to the public, being the National Mall. It was twelve years ago now when some of us were standing out there with two million of our closest friends to see the end of another dark era - but no such exuberant transition will be happening this year.

To my way of thinking - it should perhaps be regular Army troops providing the common defence, but thanks to the Posse Comitatus act, that's not actually possible. Although - given that our enemies have been stating all along that there are going to be armed demonstrations across the country, shouldn't that be considered a declaration of war, thus abrogating the act?

In any case, it is the National Guard shouldering the burden. With close proximity to our national capitol, many thousands of troops have come from the nearby states. I've heard that some governors actually refused the request (states unknown), so aren't they now part of the seditious conspiracy?

Massachusetts sent the 101st Field Artillery Regiment and the 182nd Infantry Regiment. These are the two oldest units in the entire National Guard, and they can trace their lineage all the way back to the Old North Bridge. Sending these particular units was intentional and highly symbolic, IMO.

But in reading through all the preparations - one thing gave me pause, and it should be concerning to us all. Even those that are tasked with defending the Constitution are now suspect.

WASHINGTON — U.S. defense officials say they are worried about an insider attack or other threat from service members involved in securing President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration, prompting the FBI to vet all of the 25,000 National Guard troops coming into Washington for the event.

The massive undertaking reflects the extraordinary security concerns that have gripped Washington following the deadly Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol by pro-Trump rioters. And it underscores fears that some of the very people assigned to protect the city over the next several days could present a threat to the incoming president and other VIPs in attendance.

Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy told The Associated Press on Sunday that officials are conscious of the potential threat, and he warned commanders to be on the lookout for any problems within their ranks as the inauguration approaches. So far, however, he and other leaders say they have seen no evidence of any threats, and officials said the vetting hadn't flagged any issues that they were aware of.

”We’re continually going through the process, and taking second, third looks at every one of the individuals assigned to this operation,” McCarthy said in an interview after he and other military leaders went through an exhaustive, three-hour security drill in preparation for Wednesday’s inauguration. He said Guard members are also getting training on how to identify potential insider threats.

About 25,000 members of the National Guard are streaming into Washington from across the country — at least two and a half times the number for previous inaugurals. And while the military routinely reviews service members for extremist connections, the FBI screening is in addition to any previous monitoring.

Insider Attacks. Nice. We have strayed far from the light, haven't we?

The big problem is the infiltration in both the military and the police by far right extremists who largely support the criminal in chief. It's a matter of how deep they have dug in.

Mornin' all..

So by now I'm sure you may have heard about this Garden of American Heroes, and even seen the list of people. You might have noticed some of them and realized 'hey they're not even American' or 'this person would be insulted'. You might even had looked at the list and thought 'there's no feasible way to create this many statues in a reasonable amount of time'.

My thought was to sift through this enormous list to find those that were hidden in the haystack. Names that I might not even heard before.

Like Luis Walter Alvarez and John von Neumann - who among their many scientific accomplishments worked alongside Enrico Fermi on The Manhattan Project.

Like Hannah Arendt - a Holocaust survivor, refugee and advocate against totalitarianism, who later in life went on to advocate AGAINST the concept of extending civil & human rights to refugees outside of their home country. (?!)

Like Whittaker Chambers - a spy for the Soviets who later turned coats and helped fuel McCarthyism in the late 1940s and 50s.

Like William "Billy" Mitchell, a name that could mean two different people: either the 'father' of the US Air Force, or the so-called Donkey Kong king who has been disgraced in recent years.

Like Junipero Serra, a Franciscan priest who established several missions in the western areas of North America, and was known for both indoctrination of native populations and protecting them from soldiers.

Like Grover Cleveland - probably an aspirational pick since he's the only president to have serves non-consecutive terms. He vetoed pensions for Civil War veterans, vetoed relief for farmers struck by drought in Texas, used the force of the federal government to violently suppress labor strikes and, like many Presidents during the 1800s, Native American tribes.

Like Sam Walton, founder of Wal-Mart and known for paying people just enough that they can't receive state-based poverty assistance, but not enough that they can afford much beyond rent if even that.

Like William F. Buckley, Russell Kirk, Jeane Kirkpatrick, Ronald Reagan, Antonin Scalia, Milton Friedman, John Wayne, Charlton Heston - well now, we all know who THEY are...

Interesting that the Stephcast is at the same price it was in 2008.

From the blog:

I am wondering if some states are concerned about protecting their own State Houses, and want to ensure they reserve enough NG troops to do so.

Also from this fine Commonwealth....

NATICK, Mass. —
A Natick Town Meeting member who came under fire for attending the protest at the U.S. Capitol was taken into custody Tuesday.

Suzanne Ianni, 59, was seen without a face mask on a bus in a photo that was tweeted by Super Happy Fun America, a self-described right-wing civil rights organization that is based in Massachusetts.

"Super Fascist Hate America".

This was also a concern of mine.

I have word from the TriSec compound near Mar-A-Largo that Mr. Ex-President (pauses to savor saying that) will be arriving at PBI before 9:30 am tomorrow morning.

It sounds like he'll be skipping the traditional last ride on Marine One.

He's not getting his military send off and no one wants to come to his departure from Andrews AFB because even the mooch was invited and he said no.
