Cleaning out the drawer of the blog mind...

With apologies to Bob Ryan, from whom I shamelessly steal this idea from time to time...

So, Wall Street is struggling, every time we turn around there's another bank failure, and Congress has pretty much decided to let the automakers fail. Seems that the malaise is spreading up the ladder, too. Suppose you were part of Bush's base, and maybe you're having a little Christmas guilt. So, you make some big charity donations to make yourself feel better. You'd hope that maybe the money would do some good, right? WRONG!

Some of Boston's wealthiest and most prominent philanthropists have lost millions of dollars to a Wall Street investor accused of running a $50 billion Ponzi scheme, a case that has already shuttered one foundation and could hurt nonprofits in medicine, education, and the arts.

Bernard L. Madoff, a former chairman of the Nasdaq Stock Market, was arrested Thursday in Manhattan and charged with securities fraud by federal authorities.

His clients include philanthropists Carl and Ruth Shapiro, major donors to the Museum of Fine Arts, Brandeis University, and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. The Shapiro family foundation lost almost half its money, or about $145 million, to Madoff. Other clients include Avram and Carol Goldberg, former owners of the Stop & Shop supermarket chain, and Stephen A. Fine, president of Biltrite Corp. in Waltham.

In Salem, the Robert I. Lappin Charitable Foundation, a private family organization that financed trips for Jewish youth to Israel, said it was forced to shut down and lay off seven employees yesterday after losing all of its estimated $8 million to Madoff. The foundation also supports Jewish educational and cultural services on the North Shore. Lappin lost personal funds as well.

"We are all devastated," said Deborah Coltin, executive director of the Lappin foundation. "You put your faith in someone. It turns out to be a huge scheme." Authorities say Madoff confessed to effectively paying one set of investors with money he took in from others.

Hey, since he bilked mostly Boston donors, at least it was a Ponzi Scheme. Charles Ponzi was originally from Italy, but he bilked his first million right here in Boston. Some things never change...

Speaking of change, let's change gears!

Many of us Christians are gearing up for the major holiday of the year in just a few days. Our Semitic friends are readying for Hannukah to start at sundown on December 22. But what about the third Abrahamic religion? Our Muslim brethren have just completed the Hajj, the annual pilgrimmage to Mecca by having the four-day feast of Eid-al-Adha.

There are many religious rituals around the world that many of us don't know much about (Hey, and Pagans, too. They'll be celebrating the Winter Solstice around the same time)...and the Globe has an enlightening photo essay about this years pilgrimmage, which was blessedly free from trouble. (Allah be praised!)

Yesterday marked the end of the Muslim festival Eid al-Adha, or "Feast of Sacrifice" - which also marks the end of the Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia. One of the pillars of Islamic faith, the Hajj must be carried out at least once in their lifetime by any Muslim who has the ability to do so. This year, nearly 3 million Muslims made the Hajj, without major incident, and are now returning to their homes across the world. Muslims who stayed closer to home celebrated Eid al-Adha, commemorating the the willingness of Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son to God. Traditional practices include ritual prayers, the sacrifice of animals (usually sheep), distribution of the meat amongst family, friends and the poor, and visiting with relatives. (41 photos total)

Finally today, we'll stay with the religious theme and check in with the region's largest faith...Red Sox Nation.

Earlier in the week, the Red Sox announced some new alternate home and road uniforms.

To this learned eye, the logo doesn't look much different from the current one, and they're moving away from the traditional road grays to a snazzier dark blue, and a bright red uniform for some home games.

But why would the Sox toy with arguably the best-known logo of one of the oldest and most storied franchises in baseball history?

I have a theory....money.

Back around November, the Sox announced that they would "hold the line" on ticket price increases for next season. So, instead of coughing up $5 extra dollars per seat for the one or two games we might go to next year, the average fan will shell out hundreds of dollars to outfit themselves in the new gear. Very shrewd, indeed.

Of course, that doesn't address the "pinkhats", as us die-hards derisively call the fair-weather fans that have outfitted themselves in nontraditional alternate colors.

So....It's Saturday, I'm working this afternoon, so I hope we'll all get along without a hard-hitting blog. Gotta take it easy every now and again, hmm?

:peace:

I heard about the new unis on WEEI a couple nights ago Tri.. red on blue for the away jerseys? I mean it's a good color combo and nice alternate, but not sticking with the traditional red letters on grey as the primary jersey is just odd.

Greetings form the salt mine. I slept until almost 1 PM and then had to dash out of the house to get to work. A busy day of Hofstra Basketball, Devils Hockey, Hockey Night Live and other fun.

Raine, you would probably glad you douldnt see last night's Rangers-Devils game where they tied it up only to get clocked 8-5. Althoguh there were some good fights.

While driving to my dad's this morning to set up his new PC (finally got the needed video cable from Dell) I played a new game - Snow Machine. Drive your car through a puddle (many of those around here right now), by the time the splashed water comes down it's "snow".

So I have another PC (Dad's old HP) to add to the collection. This one's running XP Media Center so it might be a better fit to stream stuff to the XBox rather than having to run Zune just for that purpose. Besides, I need another 250MB of storage.

As soon as I got back home, I got a call from my neighbor saying they couldn't get Boston's Channel 25 on their TV in the kitchen. Sure enough, nothing there - so I took a quick walk back home and tried my TV - the analog signal was gone, while the digital signal was there. She says it's been like this since yesterday so I have a feeling they may have cut the analog switch early. One le$$ tran$mitter to feed? UHF transmitters suck down LOTS of power (they are licensed for just under 2MW), yes you don't need that much because the antenna will focus the RF to where it's wanted to go but you're still talking hundreds of thousands of watts. Compare that with a typical VHF station like Channel 4 which IMO has a stronger signal with just 60kW.

And yes, wiki confirms it, they shut down the analog signal on Dec 8. Cheap ba$tige$ at FOX, eh?

"douldnt"?

I believe you've coined a new word there!

back from some XMas shopping and getting the tree.... Enjoying some Jamesons with a splash of eggnog (actually, Kroger's boiled custard, which is far superior to eggnog...)

Good evening all...

Back from a day of Holiday Slogging. I really must say I despise Buckhead. However the rewards are wonderful--- my dear hubby just poured us a lovely glass of Boiled Custard with a generous Splash of Jamesons. 'Tis the season!

I must say, I like eggnog, but you just cannot beat this southern thing they call Boiled Custard.

It's amazing how hitting the wrong keys can bring new words into the English language.

And at work I am stuck on the slowest computer in the building. :kickan: It still runs on Windows 2000 and I think some of my co-workers downloaded too mcuh crap onto it.

Raine & BobR,

I'm just wondering what the heck is boiled custard? My head and chest are too full of phlem (phlugh :P) to entertain any dairy products at the moment, but I do usually enjoy a glass or three of egg nog - what's the difference? Just curious...

Cheers,

mfaye

Icky, I never cared for eggnog. I'm just drinking straight (90 proof) George Dickel over some ice this evening...

Crazy day at the store, you'd never know there was a recession by the way things were going today. But it's the first day in 3 that wasn't downpouring, so everyone came out.

No news about a tornado on the North Shore, so no other information here.

Comment by TriSec on 12/14/2008 02:28:55
Oh, and Raine...they make a fair-weather fan hat for the Sox up here in lavender....it's actually rather handsome. If they made one in Royal Purple, I'd buy one...

But you know my baseball credentials around here.

(thinks about 1986, drains glass)
