The Sounds of Silence
Author: BobR    Date: 02/24/2021 13:39:46

Do you hear that? Those are the sounds of things you've been missing for the 4 years when the orange shitgibbon was blasting out his ugliness non-stop. As we settle back into an uneasy normalcy (politically, anyway), stories that should have been front-page news - and were drowned in the bile from 45's id - are once again being given their rightful attention.

No one has realized that more than that sad bloated sack of protoplasm - Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX). I won't rehash his self-destructive actions - they've been thoroughly covered here and elsewhere. In previous years, this would have been blown off the news grid (pun intended) by several outrages from the Previous Occupant.

Also refreshing is that President Biden is putting competent leadership back into his cabinet, rather than toadies and industry leaders determined to destroy them from within. All in all - they have their jobs cut out for them, rebuilding a federal government that was hollowed out and trashed. The confirmation hearings for Merrick Garland (future AG) are absurd, but he will ensure that the Justice Department will no longer be used for personal vendettas.

Rebuilding our relationships worldwide may be a tougher row to hoe. While it's certain that our allies sighed a breath of relief when Biden won such a declarative victory, it's also understandable that they may be a bit gun shy. The latest NATO meeting illustrates just how much damage has been done:
... Biden could face an uphill battle in Europe, which saw Washington upend its commitments under T****, including pulling out of the Iran nuclear deal and the Paris climate accord.

T****’s portrayal of NATO as an organization in crisis, dragged down by laggard members, has left many European allies feeling worn down.

“There’s an exhaustion in European security circles from T**** and his unpredictability,” said a European NATO diplomat.

“We’ve just spent four years not talking to each other and the world is very different from four years ago. Biden needs to do a big repair job in Europe.”

Portugal’s Defence Minister Joao Gomes Cravinho, underscoring wariness about the United States, told the European Parliament on Jan. 28 that the T**** years were an “ideological experiment” that had “devastating effects in terms of the credibility of the United States and its strength internationally.”

The deadly Jan. 6 riots at the U.S. Capitol in which pro-T**** followers tried to keep him in power, has also done severe damage to America’s global image as a beacon of democracy, political analysts said.

[...]

French President Emmanuel Macron has gone so far as to say Europe needs its own sovereign defense strategy, independent of the United States here.
(I am following Colbert's example of blotting out the asshole's name when quoting sources)

We still have a pandemic to get through, but once again we can hear the birds singing and see a functional government emerging from the ashes. There is still a lot of repair to be done, but we are well on our way to returning to some sense of normalcy. It sounds wonderful.

Привет, товарищи! Мой русский становится лучше, но у меня нет русской клавиатуры. Для этого по-прежнему нужен Google Translate.

[ Greetings, comrades! My Russian is getting better - but I don't have a Russian Keyboard. Still need Google Translate for that. ]

A brief article worth the time to read.

Good morning, bloggers!!!!

I think that the world will be dealing with the legacy of the past four years for many years to come. We have a lot of rebuilding to do.

On a more personal note, Mom gets her second vaccine dose on Monday. (I am waiting for my first.)
