Insanity (deja vu edition)
Author: BobR    Date: 11/03/2021 12:44:10

One definition of insanity it's been said, is to keep doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Here we are not even a full year away from the most disastrous 4 years of presidential ineptitude and malfeasance in our lifetime, and voters say "more of that, please". There are still votes being counted, but this is all pretty ugly for Democrats.

Virginia, of course, is the most visible. They elect their commonwealth-wide and local representation in odd-numbered years. This one has been a doozy, with Trumpkin Youngkin plastering the airwaves with ads accusing McAuliffe of wanting to force Critical Race Theory on kids. The ads didn't actually say "CRT", but it was certainly implied - the dog whistle was deafening. Most of the McAullife ads were comparing Youngkin to TFG, which probably actually helped Youngkin with a broad swath of Republican voters.

As the governship goes, so goeth the vice-guv and AG seats. It appears that Republicans may have won at least one of the state House seats too, enough to push control into Republican hands.

This is a state that Biden won by 10 points a year ago. Yes, President Biden isn't super-inspiring, and it's frustrating that he can't get much done with the U.S. Congress as it is. VA was lost by the Democrats because of lackadaisical messaging, uneducated white women, and uninspired voters not turning out. The good citizens of VA will have the next two years of regression to deal with, and hopefully it's enough to make them realize how important their vote is, and motivate them next year for the "off year" U.S. House and Senate elections.

Beyond VA, New Jersey (of all places) is teetering on replacing democratic governor Murphy with republican Jack Ciattarelli. It's VERY close.

It's frustrating and aggravating and depressing that voters are so lazy and demand to be inspired before they'll peel themselves off of their couches and trudge down to the polls. The four previous years should have provided a lifetime of 220V-to-the-gonads of inspiration to realize how important it is to vote in EVERY election - ESPECIALLY their state and local races.

We have city/county elections on Sunday. I can guarantee I will be there.

Mornin' all..

And the 'blame progressives' nonsense has already started. This has nothing to do with what happened in Virginia AT ALL. I'm gonna say this and hope that some of you don't get upset - Terry McAulliffe screwed himself, despite his previous decent-enough stint as a competent governor. He put his big ol' foot in his mouth, and the media and Youngkin destroyed him for it. And the really fucked up part is he took down Ayala and Herring and the House of Delegates with him.

They better pass the redistricting maps NOW before the new people take control.

I blame Sinema and Manchin.

and I have no idea how one can campaign against racist lies. I feel a lot like I did that Wednesday in 2026.

Exactly five years ago.

Morning to all of you

We've had crappy GOP governors before, VA is still a purple state, so it will always go back and forth. BUT how do you run against people who's only care is to "own the libs" and are a-ok with soft-core racism? They are sociopaths and psychopaths. They aren't healthy people.

tRumpkin didn't "destroy" Terry, he won by only 1% (@72,000 votes). He took advantage of Terry's misstep and dogpiled it with racism.

You know, I've been watching what Sinema has been doing the past few weeks, and I really can't figure her out. She's pushing for stuff that's been cut out to be put back IN, but then with the other hand she doesn't want to raise taxes on the rich at all. And then yesterday I hear she had a one-on-one meeting with Rep. Jayapal about something (I assume it was either the prescription drug thing or this SALT deduction BS that Bernie is now freaking about).

Thank you, Mala.

I feel so badly for you and Virginia.

Good morning, bloggers!!!!

I hope that everyone is feeling well, all things considered.

The Democrats need to learn not to bring feather dusters to gun fights. Address the issues, explain why someone is wrong, and offer up what you have done and what you plan to do. Instead, I think McAuliffe fought with the wrong strategy. Instead of running against Youngkin, he sounded like he was campaigning against Trump.

Also, Raine, you do have a typo as you wrote 2026.

To Mala's point:

In a bright spot - Danica Roem got her 3rd term in her district. So happy for her, she's such an awesome delegate. Its looks like Michelle Maldonado (Dem) won the 50th District (mine). Briana Sewell (Dem) seems to have won in Prince William.

BTW I do have a down-ballot roundup, but I'm in the middle of doing some last-minute work stuff before my boss leaves for a tourism conference. I ASSURE YOU THERE IS GOOD NEWS OUT THERE SOMEWHERE!

Well now.. Sen. Merkley just announced he won't vote to confirm Rahm as ambassador to Japan.

Phil Murphy has pulled back into the lead in New Jersey. Still lots left to count there.

Good morning.

Long Island didn't go well with Republicans taking back the county executive and DA slots from Democrats. Using the cash bail issue to hammer out the whole "soft on crime" crap. On the other hand, Eric Adams was declared the winner in the NYC mayoral race just 15 minutes after the polls closed. This does make me nervous about 2022 considering how narrowly the Democrats hold Congress.

It looks that way although Suffolk has been more red than Nassau.

So for a while I've had this very doughy idea of doing some kind of civics infographic/educational, true history thing. I'm not sure where to start or how to do it. Any ideas?
