Listening to Hate
Author: TriSec    Date: 12/04/2021 13:39:12

Good Morning.

I've been taken off the driving schedule for the remainder of the year. Nothing bad - working on a project for the company down in the maintenance bay.

Of course, that means I now interact on a daily basis with my maintenance staff instead of the regular drivers. I probably don't have to tell you about the stereotype.

We've actually got a really nice sound system in the garage. I took the time to crawl up there one of my first days and re-connect and re-arrange a couple of the speakers. (The guys are great at fixing trolleys - electronics, not so much.)

I knew this going in, from my time in and out of the garage before. With the death of Rush Limbaugh, fortunately the vitriol is not nearly as bad as it could be.

But every afternoon like clockwork, something called the Grace Curley Show.

Right now, it's primarily a local talk show, but is simulcast on Newsmax. I don't suppose she has too much national traction, but she is an executive producer of the Howie Carr show, which does have some national ill repute.

Grace also writes a column for the right-wing rag in this city, being the Boston Herald. Here is an example of her work.

The president announced Friday that the U.S. would be instituting a travel ban for foreign nationals from South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique and Malawi.

The reason? A new variant of COVID-19 called omicron has surfaced, showing up in those places.

Because our society seems determined to render the Babylon Bee obsolete, the variant’s name is brought to you by wokeness.

Officials at the World Health Organization skipped two letters of the Greek alphabet. According to The Telegraph, the officials skipped the letter Xi in order to avoid stigmatizing China.

So now that the health geniuses have settled on a politically correct name for the variant, the Biden administration is working on keeping the non-stigmatizing variant out of the country.

As always, “Jill’s Husband” is off to a shaky start. The ban doesn’t even go into effect until Monday. Like Joe Biden, omicron takes the weekends off. Hey, listen — I don’t make the science, I just follow it.

Besides the asinine implementation of the ban, what will be even harder for the president to explain is why said bans are no longer considered xenophobic.

In February 2020, then-candidate/basement dweller Joe Biden tweeted, “Trump further diminished the U.S. in the eyes of the world by expanding his travel ban. This new ‘African Ban,’ is designed to make it harder for black and brown people to immigrate to the United States. It’s a disgrace, and we cannot let him succeed.”

His then-running-mate Kamala Harris echoed this sentiment and wrote, “Trump’s extended un-American travel ban undermines our nation’s core values. It is clearly driven by hate, not security.”

Implementing a travel ban is racist, xenophobic and hateful if your name is Donald Trump. However, if your name is Brandon, your decision will be met with zero outrage from bleeding-heart liberals in the media like Jim Acosta and Yamiche Alcindor. None of these performative journalists would claim Biden is a racist for merely trying to protect the American people from a dangerous virus. That kind of hyper-partisan derangement was reserved for President Mean Tweets.

But there's the current dog-whistle. I don't even pretend to understand the "Let's Go Brandon" business, nor do I want to. But listening to her show this past week, it is truly word salad. There was not a single coherent thought, and about every five minutes or so, I did hear her spouting off, "Let's Go Brandon!" in a sports-arena style.

I also had the misfortune of forced listening on the day our governor (Charlie Baker, R-Swampscott) decided he was not running again. Remember, Der Fuhrer proclaimed Governor Baker a "RINO", so of course none of the SA Brownshirts like him. But apparently because President Biden once accidentally called him 'Charlie PARKER', that's what they were calling him all day, in an effort to mock both the President and the Governor. That's the afternoon that really got on my nerves.

There are at least two mechanics in the shop that think like us; they've referred to this as their "afternoons of hate", and have managed to find ways to be elsewhere in the building whenever the radio station goes on in the afternoon. I regret that I cannot be, but fortunately in the deepest part of the stockroom, I can't hear the radio, and the room does have a closing door.

But it is pervasive. I was talking with one of the mechanics two nights ago - a rather affable gentleman otherwise, who has no idea of my political leanings. Out of the blue, he stated - "Do you believe this shit with the new variant? The Dems are going to use this to fuck with the elections again and let everybody mail in ballots..."

I made some excuse, and being close enough to 8 hours, I punched out and went home.

It's a great project I'm on - but it is going to be an interesting winter. I'll try not to kill anyone.

Dealing at work with people like that is tough, but if they bring it up, then it seems like fair game. You could try responding calmly and with facts, and your other similarly-winged co-workers might appreciate it and be willing to not let that slide as well.

All it takes is one person.

Best case scenario, is that management decides to de-escalate the situation and change the station to music.

But then you might be forced to listen to Country & Western... I guess you need to pick your poison.

I am actually surprised that they let political talk radio (left OR right) air at all.

I mean, I think earbuds are fine and private --- but I don't think I could stand that ish.
