The Ship has Sailed

This is the time of year when many communities gather to celebrate the holiday season with parades of all sorts. Many towns along waterfronts like to celebrate with a boat parade. We used to see them when we lived in Alexandria along the Potomac riverfront. It's really lovely to see decorations and the boats so lovingly dressed up. They are benign and meant to just spread some cheer.

Yorktown, Virginia is another one of those places that hold an annual holiday boat parade. This year, however, something happened. The winner of the parade was stripped of its honor.
The well-lit 50-foot vessel also featured “FJB” in white lights, an apparent reference to “F--- Joe Biden,” the stadium chant that gave rise to the “Let’s go, Brandon” euphemism.

A member of the Yorktown Foundation’s board of directors, Walt Akers, apologized to the community and event sponsors Monday for what he called “a huge mistake.”

“We profoundly apologize for what happened, and we deeply regret that this happened at all,” Akers said. “And we’re going to take actions to make sure it doesn’t happen in the future.” (snip)

“It just breaks the spirit that this happened,” said York County resident Teri Hodson, who attended the event. “It was disheartening.”

Earlier that evening, Hodson said, she was among families with children at the bonfire, with people dressed up for the the holiday festivities “and I thought, how blessed am I?”

Those feelings ended when she saw the boat.

“That sentiment on that boat lit up in lights — F Joe Biden — was the antithesis of the Christmas spirit,” she said, adding that people had to explain to their children what the “Let’s Go Brandon” slogan meant.

The Yorktown Foundation stripped the boat of its “Best in Show” title hours later. Organizers declared the runner-up — a boat called “Peace on Earth” that featured singing angels in white — the rightful winner. (snip)

Parade organizers also have since posted an apology on their Facebook page, and listed preliminary steps they plan to take. The foundation also is sending a letter to its other underling organizations — the Celebrate Yorktown Committee, the Virginia Symphony in Yorktown, the Tall Ships Committee — to tell them in no uncertain terms that political messages aren’t permitted.
As the article points out parents were put in a position of having to explain to their children what that stupid phrase actually meant. It's time for more people to stop this from happening and put policies in place to prevent this from invading every part of our space. I personally condemn it all, and that includes the mess that happened with the Fox news Holiday tree. Good on Yorktown for putting its foot down.

More condemnation of this behavior, please. It's not politics it's just being mean and bullying.

Also, here is where you can view the winning boats as they seem to be woefully missing from the many stories about the debacle.

WaPo has this interesting nugget about the event:

In Yorktown on Saturday, a group of five judges, including the chair of the York County Board of Supervisors and the local sheriff, awarded Berger’s boat the parade’s top prize, the Daily Press reported. After the foundation started getting complaints, Akers drove to the docks to investigate. Once he figured out what had happened, he asked the committee’s chair to strip Berger of the “Best in Show” prize and give it to the boat that had come in second.

The parade’s organizers told Akers and the foundation they were “perplexed” that the boat had won, according to a statement published by WTKR. On Wednesday, the parade committee said new measures will include guidance on appropriate entries, entry forms with a description of the proposed decorations and a review process of the planned themes.

Berger said he turned in a form three days before the parade that told organizers what he planned to do. Akers confirmed Berger had informed organizers about his boat’s theme by filling out an entry form, but said he wasn’t sure how detailed it was.

In an irony, an great school near where I used to live left me a message about an opening. I had applied in July.

I distinctly remember kids trying to get scissors, sharp pencils and pens in the ceiling - it was a challenge - didn't think they still did that.

The irony is that I am now about 2000 miles away from the job in Northwest Indiana.

I guess there is little new for kids to do to cause problems in the classroom.
